Chapter 87: Guidance (1)

Tabitha wanted nothing more than to grab Tobias by the ear and drag him out of the room to talk some sense into him. As always, he failed to see how his actions led to others having to clean up his mess.

Tobias could have waited a little longer to propose to Hazel and then there would be nothing wrong in the eyes of the court or town. There would be no one angry that he had ignored tradition and no one questioning why all of this was being done so fast.

Tobias should have at least given Tabitha and Jeffrey a warning that he was up to something so they could be prepared for what would happen after. If he had told her something and spoken of his love for Hazel, Tabitha would have tried to help him as best as she could.

Tabitha was all for him finding love, but not for him doing something to have her or Jeffrey rush to clean up this mess. freewёbnoνel.com

"Do not step foot out of this room, Tobias. You cannot take their daughter," Tabitha said, looking to Nathan for help to order Hazel to not leave the room.

"With all due respect, my daughter will not bear whatever it is you expect for her to do. When you invited her to the selection, you promised that there were guards around to keep her safe. If they were to ever be alone to do anything, I should have an issue with the palace," Nathan said.

He trusted that the palace would watch over Hazel during the time she was away from home. They were quick to bring her to this room to try to have her checked, but they should have been quicker to question when they weren’t watching over his daughter.

Hazel should not have been alone with any man in the palace. Nathan didn’t care how well Hazel knew them or how well the queen knew them. He was given the king’s word that his daughter would be protected here as she was at home.

"There were always guards around the palace wherever the women roamed-"

"Then they did nothing," Nathan said, ignoring that he had interrupted the queen. "It is evident that the prince came to love my daughter and wanted to propose to her now instead of wasting others’ time. I am a man who respects tradition, but I will not allow you to test my daughter. You may not trust your son, but I trust my daughter."

Nathan knew of the rumours that followed the young prince. Of how he would spend his time with different women. He was a well-known flirt. However, Hazel was not like the prince. She was taught of the consequences of being intimate with someone before marriage especially when she was here in the palace.

When both children were adamant that nothing happened, why continue to ignore them instead of trusting them so they wouldn’t run out?

"If you wish to proceed with this test, I will take my daughters out of the palace and out of the selection. I must warn you that I will not stay quiet about what you and others failed to do while they were in your care," Nathan said, choosing to go against the palace.

His daughter mattered most and he was still not over Helena being invited here only to be made to leave the selection.

Tobias stayed to listen to what his mother would do. If he ran off with Hazel, there would be a big scandal. If Nathan took Hazel out of the palace and made claims that she was not properly looked after, then there would be a bigger scandal. They would lose a family that was loyal to the royal family.

His mother should pick letting them go back to the ballroom to enjoy their engagement since there wasn’t a way the men in the room would allow Hazel to be tested.

Tobias wanted to bring up how offended it was that his mother or anyone else believed that he would have been quick to do something with Hazel, but kept quiet so Hazel would not go through with killing him.

Tabitha felt pushed to a wall by everyone. The court wanted a test to be done and Tobias was close to leaving. She needed to sit down to let the coming headache pass. The selection was meant to be a wonderful event, but nothing about it felt peaceful.

Tabitha could only think of one instance where the guards had lost Hazel and Tobias as they had run into the maze, but that wasn’t long enough for something to happen between them. Unless the guards were more loyal to her son to hide more times they had lost track of Tobias.

There wasn’t any chance for Tobias to be alone with the women for long without anyone passing by to watch. Tabitha made sure of that because of the incident that happened with the first group. Also knowing her son and what some women might do to put themselves higher in the selection.

Tabitha had witnessed it all when it was her turn in the past.

"If it is revealed later on that something did happen, the palace will not protect Hazel or Tobias. I will call off the test, but Nathan, you have been around the court long enough to know that they will want proof because they will not believe that this has anything to do with love," Tabitha said, reminding him of the challenge up ahead.

"I know that," Nathan answered.

Everyone was betting on a young woman from a family they were acquainted with so those Nathan were not close to would be the loudest to claim that Hazel slept with the prince. No one really cared about love in the palace.

"Should there be any talk of having her be tested, I want to be present," Nathan said as he too could be loud when it came to his family.

"You will need to speak to the king, Now, come with me, Hazel," Tabitha said, walking to the young couple.

Tobias stood in front of Hazel because she wasn’t going anywhere without him. "What for?" He asked.

He couldn’t trust that his mother wouldn’t try to take Hazel off to the side to convince her to take a test.

"Tobias," Tabitha said, completely over her son at the moment. She didn’t want to look at him until her anger had gone away. If he continued to stand before her, for the first time ever, she might slap him.

She never wanted to lay a hand on her son so Tabitha just needed to get away from him for a moment.

"I am taking her to place one of my old tiaras on her head so we have a reason for leaving the ballroom. Renee and Helena can join us since you are so worried. Go back to help your father, Tobias. Do your part in cleaning up the mess you made," said Tabitha.

"I wouldn’t call proposing to the woman I want to make my wife a mess. Let’s not do something stupid while I am away," Tobias warned, letting go of Hazel’s hand to let her leave with her mother. "This kingdom will find itself without a prince if you try to test her."
