Chapter 88: Guidance (2)

’The same threat again,’ Tabitha thought.

Since it came time for Tobias to take on his role as king, Tabitha had been hearing this threat often that the kingdom wouldn’t have a future king because Tobias was likely to run away and leave them without a clue as to who would be the next king.

They had allowed him to go off to fight in the war so he could do what he wanted for a short time and then return to do his duty. Tobias returned still not wanting to be inside the palace and repeating the same threat.

Tabitha had made sure Tobias’s time in the palace when he was growing up was as good as she could make it so it would feel like a normal home. She couldn’t place when he had started to hate the palace so much.

She understood that all the scheming would get to someone at some point, but they had a duty to follow. The grand life Tobias lived had a price. He was to become king and look after the kingdom. Like Jeffrey, Tobias would get to be free when he had a son.

As long as Tobias didn’t stir up trouble or purposely try to pick fights in the court, his time as the king could go by without many problems. Tobias failed to see that as king, there would be fewer people to mess with him as he would no longer be the little prince many still saw him as.

"I will go with the queen and Hazel," Renee said, to stop the son and mother from further getting angry with each other.

The queen wasn’t Renee’s favourite person in the world right now because of what she wanted Hazel to do, but she disliked seeing any mother being at odds with their child so she was stepping in.

Just this once she would help the queen. There was more needed to be done before Renee could forgive anyone for what they suggested Hazel do.

The queen’s hands might have been tied so she couldn’t help Hazel, but Renee disliked how Tabitha had continued to push for the test instead of finding a better solution while there wasn’t anyone from the court present.

If the roles were reversed where Renee was Tobias’s mother and Tabitha was Hazel’s mother, Renee would have been using this time to listen to anyone’s ideas. Did the walls have ears that the queen was so reluctant to listen to her son at first?

Renee held Helena’s hand and walked with her to the door so they could join the queen in walking out.

Tobias stepped to the side to let his mother pass. His mother was stubborn but with the threat of him declining to become the next king, she would listen now as it wasn’t a threat he said for the fun of it.

The many times he had left the palace and was not found until he returned would be a reminder that should he want to disappear, he could.

Hazel allowed for the queen to pass first and then let her mother go second. Before leaving she looked to Tobias and said, "Thank you."

She didn’t want to do any kind of test and if not for him, there might be a doctor coming to do something painful to her right now.

Hazel tried to see both sides and though Tobias had done something without informing anyone, Hazel didn’t see why she would have to be the one in pain.

"Surely you wouldn’t expect that I let the doctor lift your dress-"

"Uhmm," Nathan cleared his throat. If he had a knife, he would throw it at Tobias.

Hazel shared her father’s feelings, but she wanted to strangle Tobias to stop him from saying whatever was on his mind.

"And perform his weird experiments," Tobias still finished. There was something else he wanted to say to make Hazel angry, but he had forgotten about Nathan. "I know the doctor they were going to get. You should join me in sending him away. I’m sure you’ll want a word with the man bringing him."

"I will take my leave to follow the queen now," Hazel said and then walked out the door.

’Not even a kiss after protecting her,’ Tobias sighed. What they were being accused of became more ridiculous the more he thought about the fact they had never kissed.

If he were to share this, no one might believe him.

Outside the room, Hazel caught up to her mother and sister with the queen at the front.

Helena was the first one to look at Hazel. She was amused by everything that had happened. Someone else was finally sharing suspicion about Hazel’s relationship with the prince. However, Helena didn’t think this was the answer. She knew that Hazel would never do something with the prince even though Helena had implied it during an argument with Hazel.

Hazel was not a fool to do something that would get her in trouble. Something that would embarrass herself and their family. Regardless of how she felt about Hazel’s relationship with the prince, Helena was glad that Hazel did not have to go through with a test.

Renee held Hazel’s hand so she would walk holding hands with both Hazel and Helena. She gave Hazel’s hand a little squeeze to let her know that everything would be fine. Should the queen have another motive, Renee would lead Hazel out of the palace.

They followed Tabitha to the side of the palace where the king and queen’s rooms were.

"Bring me a few of my tiaras," Tabitha ordered a maid in the room.

"Yes, Your Majesty."

"I will have the maid place it in your hair so it won’t fall. You can all take a seat," Tabitha said, sitting down on her usual chair.

She closed her eyes as she rubbed her temple. Tabitha required rest, but she couldn’t right now because she needed to go back out to the ballroom with Hazel.

"Your Majesty, I was not aware that the prince was going to propose to me," said Hazel. She wanted to make this clear right now.

Tabitha opened her eyes and looked Hazel’s way. "I am aware. It is evident now that this was all my son’s doing. I apologise for you being involved in this. You could not properly enjoy your engagement."

"I hope you can forgive me, Hazel. There is not much I can do when it comes to the court. They create a big fuss and won’t let the matter rest. One day you will see my side when you are queen," Tabitha said, trying to end any bad feelings Hazel might be forming toward her.

"If you help me, I will be able to deal with matters like this in a better way," Hazel said.

Hazel didn’t know exactly what the queen had to deal with during her time in the palace, but if she could guide her, Hazel would be better at dealing with the court in the future. She could learn from Tabitha’s mistakes while getting advice. The queen should want her to be better just as Hazel would want the next queen to be better than herself.

"Of course,’ Tabitha agreed. "I will help you become a queen better than I am."
