Chapter 171: Magic (Physics) (2)

Vermel’s body flew through the air.

The world flipped. The ground and sky, the sky and ground went round and round.

Whump! Unable to catch himself, Vermel tumbled on the ground like a rag.

“Kugh....”

“Romel!”

This time, Merilda brought out an organ and played it.

“What the.”

Aether touched down and looked at Vermel who was swallowing back groans, her eyes a mix of surprise and disdain.

“You can’t even block this.”

“Ughh, fuck.... kgh.......”

It hurt. It hurt so bad that it was hard not to swear.

Vermel clenched his teeth, not caring if bled. He had to endure the pain and get up no matter what.

This was punishment, punishment for having left alone for a long time the one and only person from his home country who had depended on him, on whom he had depended.

“Merilda!”

“Erika, Jarod, keep going! I’ll do something about this!”

Whirling her staff, Aether walked towards Merilda, the staff spinning at an absurd speed. Gulp, Merilda’s throat went. Fear stirred in her subconscious.

“Damn it.... What in the world are you.”

“What do you mean what am I when all I did was swing my staff once.”

The corners of Aether’s lips curled up.

“I’m the top student of this school.”

“...What you just used was ‘Teleportation’, right? That’s something that Golden-Eyeds shouldn’t be able to use at all.”

Air Magic could only be used by those who had green or yellowish-green eyes. At least if one didn’t use a scroll or magic circle.

Merilda’s eyes scanned every inch of Aether’s torso, but there was no sign that she had used a scroll or anything

That was how little the concentration of mana was.

“It’s a cheat, I said.”

Aether replied with a shrug. Merilda huffed a laugh at the absurdity.

“You keep saying that you’re cheating.......”

“And if you want to know, then beat me?”

“I’ll make you regret those words.”

Merilda gathered all the mana that she could. They surrounded her body with a light that was like a fresh green leaf.

What was made was a human form. A spirit form wearing clothes made of leaves appeared atop her shoulder.

“Oho.”

It was the appearance of a beautiful girl. Realizing intuitively what she was, Aether let out an exclamation.

The Intermediate Elemental, ‘Echo’–a little lady who assisted with controlling sound and pressure.

[Hmm? You’re giving off strange vibes.]

Sitting on Merilda’s shoulder, Echo quirked her head and spoke.

[You’re hiding something, aren’t you?]

“Hah.”

Aether adjusted her grip on the staff, and Merilda also quickly prepared to cast.

The opponent was a ‘supporter’, a position in which they stood at the mid or rear section and buffed all allies.

If she got close to Merilda at once, it would be disadvantageous for her. Being aware of that, Merilda quickly put space between them and distanced herself from Aether.

[Merilda! Watch out!]

It was the wrong move.

“Thought I couldn’t use it a second time?”

The back of her neck went cold. Concerned for her master, Echo immediately casted ‘Melody of Protection’ and ‘Song of Green Life’. As one whose main thing was buffs, that was the best she could do.

Smack! The end of the staff whacked her on the shoulder blade.

“Ahhh!”

“Merildaaa!!”

Screaming, Erika retreated to the back; she had been in the middle of clashing with Lotte.

“Hey, are you okay?”

“I-it’s killing me....”

Her best friend was taken down. Erika’s cold eyes turned to Aether.

“You! Aren’t you taking it too far?”

“I avoided the vital point. She’ll be fine in half a day at the least if she goes to the infirmary.”

Grind. Teeth clenched.

Two were already down. Within only a minute, the two members in the back row had already fallen!

To be honest, Erika had secretly agreed with Jarod.

They, too, were students of a top academy, so she thought they were at the same level as Tilette.

And as they were also users of Elemental Magic, including that, she had firmly believed that they would win for sure.

However.

“What is....”

What in the world was this?

“Sylvia!”

With Erika’s shout, the surrounding air began to stir,  a wind whirling around her.

Then soon, Erika manifested her Elemental with the wind. An agile-looking girl appeared next to her.

[Whoa, whoa, whoa! Erika, that’s no ordinary one!]

“I know.”

[Isn’t that just a Beast? She’s too ruthless with the way she beats people!]

The words of ‘Sylvia’, the Elemental protecting Erika, hit the nail on the head. Aether moved as calmly as she could.

“Make sense, why don’t you? If I were a Beast, would I have beat you guys up like this?”

“Then?”

“I would’ve made a run for it already.”

“I-is that so?”

[Eeeeh.... I think she’s lying.]

That fucking asshole, why’s it so friggin’ astute?

So this was why Rosemary had been scared of the elves who could use Elemental Magic. They were total counterforces.

“Kugh!”

“How weak.”

Just then, Jarod beat Klion.

“I forfeit, forfeit. This is too much.”

With this, one person on Tilette’s side was also down. Klion clicked his tongue and stepped off the field.

The conditions of the match were simple: leave the field once you give up or faint. The last team standing in the ring would be the winner.

“Ugh, that Prince guy just gets in the way! Move aside so I can blast them altogether!”

Huffing and puffing, Freyr transmuted a rocket artillery. Jarod dove in like a blade towards the kid.

If it was shot at zero distance, then it would also hurt the one who shot it. Freyr especially  was specialized for the back row. Jarod’s decision made sense.

“Here I go.”

“Freyr!”

Whiiiip!

“Uwaa!”

Lotte swiftly grabbed Freyr. Jarod’s staff sliced through the air with a dull whooshing sound.

Having been pulled back all of a sudden, Freyr’s hat floated into the air and her face turned a sickly blue in that moment.

“N-no!”

Freyr frantically let go of her weapon and pulled her hat down onto her head. Aether, who had been bickering with Erika, thought her stomach would drop when she saw that happen.

“Hoooh.”

She had nearly lost a friend, since this world didn’t take kindly to beastkin.

“Well, shit....”

Groaning ‘ughhh’, Vermel slowly pulled himself up. He gripped his staff in reverse.

Slam! He stuck it into the ground and supported himself. It was hard to even be standing right now.

“K-khuk...!”

In the meantime, Erika took a hit to the stomach and went flying. Although she tried her best to try different techniques, it was beyond her.

No longer able to stand it, Jarod shouted in bewilderment.

“What the heck is she?”

Beating two people, fine, he could give her that. But not a third. That was skill, not luck.

There was something odd, however.

“Come to think of it, when do you use magic?”

“Hm? I used Teleportation.”

“Not that, I mean aren’t you going to use any other offensive magic.”

Keeping his eye on Freyr and Lotte, Jarod slowly returned to his camp. He didn’t know about Merilda, but Romel was recovering so there was still a chance.

Of course they did, because she had only been swinging her staff around since earlier.

Thus she was restricted with using magic similar to the other Golden-Eyed.

“Perhaps you can’t do ranged attacks?”

Jarod asked while fixing his glasses. There was no answer.

“I knew it.”

“But I can, though?”

Whooosh!

Thwack!

“Arghh!”

It was a bullseye on the forehead. Jarod couldn’t hold himself up and toppled backwards, just like he had done to Klion.

A silhouette came upon Jarod who had personally experienced the conservation of angular momentum. Glinting gold eyes refracted in his glasses.

“Sh-shit.......”

A chill went down his spine. His body was trembling. His legs wouldn’t stop shaking.

Right, it felt as if–

There was a Cataclysm standing before him.

“All of you getting knocked out by a single blow, geez.”

Letting out a sigh, Aether picked up the calipers that had dropped. Her gaze went to the back.

“Maybe not?”

There stood Vermel who was breathing heavily.

An indescribable exhaustion was running through his whole body. The place where he got hit felt like it had dislocated. It was as Merilda said; it killed him.

Still.

He had to try once more.

[Stress level : 60 (Dangerous)]Because he had to release her stress even in a way like this–

Vermel decided to sacrifice himself.

Since that was the only route that would save this world, and the least he could do for his fellow countryman who had waited for him.

“You can forfeit too if you don’t think you can do it.”

“...No, I can still go.”

Vermel tightened his grip on his staff with sweaty hands.

**“Ah.”

It was a foreign ceiling.
