The Mind-Reading Mate: Why Is the Lycan King So Obsessed With Me?!-Chapter 456: The Night the Queens Shined
"Blessed by the gods," they said...
Primrose wasn’t sure she was truly blessed. Just a few days ago, one of the gods had driven her out of the temple so harshly that the memory still lingered in her mind.
"Since my honored guests have arrived, I believe it is time to officially open this banquet," Averon announced in a loud, clear voice.
He stood at the center of the ballroom, with Bianca behind him. He spoke for a while, offering his greetings and expressing his thanks for still being alive at the age of thirty-three.
Primrose and Edmund stood quietly among the crowd. Her gaze drifted toward her friends—Aster, Cassandra, and Ilyana—who were standing on the other side of the hall. Cassandra and Ilyana had come with their husbands, while Aster stood beside her father.
Primrose wanted nothing more than to walk over and greet them right away. But tonight, she was here as the Queen of Noctvaris, so she had to stay calm, graceful, and composed.
"How are you, Rosie?" Primrose widened her eyes slightly when Rowena suddenly whispered beside her ear.
"You look even more radiant now," Rowena continued with a soft smile. "From the way you look, I’d say your husband treats you just as kindly as you wrote in your letter."
Primrose’s cheeks immediately turned red as she recalled what she had written in that letter. She hadn’t written anything inappropriate, but still... reading it again now, she must have sounded like a young girl deeply in love.
"Yes, he treats me very well," Primrose said, smiling back. "What about you, Nana? Your treatment seems to be going well. And how is baby Alex? Can he talk now?"
Rowena chuckled softly because Primrose had asked so many questions at once. "Yes, my treatment is going very well. My husband did his best to find an excellent witch doctor for me. As for baby Alex, yes, he talks a lot these days."
Unfortunately, Rowena hadn’t brought her son with her because of the cold weather. The two queens leaned closer, whispering softly, careful not to draw attention.
But how could anyone ignore two beautiful queens smiling and laughing together? They looked warm, bright, and full of life, even far more so than Bianca, the Queen of Azmeria.
Bianca’s gown and jewelry were far more detailed, and instead of a tiara, she wore the queen’s crown. Yet somehow, she still couldn’t outshine Primrose and Rowena. The sight made her feel irritated, and regret slowly crept in for inviting them.
[I deliberately invited them because I thought they were pathetic, but what is this?!] Bianca shouted in her mind. [Not only are they shining even more now, their husbands pamper them far too much!]
Primrose stopped talking to Rowena when she heard Bianca’s thoughts. It seemed that the reason Bianca had invited them to the King of Azmeria’s banquet was to humiliate them and prove that she was better and more fortunate than Primrose and Rowena.
Primrose took a deep breath and let out a long sigh. Honestly, she knew Bianca often liked to show off, especially after marrying the king. But she had never imagined that Bianca’s thoughts could be this rotten.
If she had known Bianca’s true intentions, Primrose probably wouldn’t have come to this banquet. But then again, even with Bianca’s bitterness, her invitation allowed her to reunite with her friends, and to see how healthy and beautiful Rowena had become.
"As always, we will begin the banquet with a ballroom dance," Averon said as he took his wife’s hand. He lifted Bianca’s hand slightly, guiding her forward as the music slowly began to play.
"Rosie, I’m sorry. I need to talk to my father for a moment," Rowena whispered when she noticed her father standing nearby. Her husband, the King of Elandria, had already gone over to greet his father-in-law. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
Primrose nodded with a gentle smile. "Of course. Enjoy your time with your parents."
Once Rowena left, Primrose leaned closer to Edmund and lowered her voice. "He’s the one who sent your letter to the Emperor."
Edmund’s eyes widened slightly, and he frowned as he replied to Primrose in his mind. [But I didn’t send my proposal letter through the King of Azmeria.]
"I know," Primrose said softly. "But I believe someone leaked that letter to him, probably the soldier who delivered it to my father’s manor."
As the King of Azmeria, it was easy for him to learn things that should have remained secret, including confidential letters sent to the nobles under his rule.
[Did he do it on purpose?] Edmund asked suspiciously. [So you would be sent to Noctvaris?]
Even though Noctvaris was his own territory, Edmund knew that to Primrose—at least back then—it felt more like a punishment. She was human, with no magic to protect herself, so the idea of being sent to the land of beasts must have been terrifying.
And that thought wasn’t only in Primrose’s mind, but also in the King of Azmeria’s, the one who deliberately wanted to create chaos in the political relationship between humans and beasts.
"I’ll explain everything after the dance," Primrose whispered softly. She smiled brightly just as Averon called for the kings to bring their queens to the center of the ballroom.
"My wife, what if I—"
"You’ll be fine." Primrose squeezed Edmund’s hand and gently pulled him forward. "We’ve practiced so many times. Just trust yourself."
During practice, Edmund’s dancing skills had improved greatly, and Primrose believed he was more than ready. However, she hadn’t considered that being watched by so many eyes would make him so nervous that he feared embarrassing his wife.
Sometimes, Primrose found it a little sad. Edmund had never acted like this when facing his enemies, yet in a normal situation, being watched by so many people felt like a nightmare to him.
Honestly, Primrose could understand why. Perhaps he acted this way because, in the past, all his actions were constantly watched by his parents and his master when he was still a slave.
Every time he made a mistake, he was punished. Unfortunately, that feeling hadn’t faded even after Edmund gained his freedom.
"Don’t worry." Primrose placed her palm against his cheek before they moved along with the orchestra music. "My husband is my pride and joy. Even if you make a mistake, it won’t change how I feel about you."
