The Overnight Chosen Wife: darling, kiss me deeper-Chapter 588: Death sentence
Chapter 588: Death sentence
"I can’t believe this." Xiehan shook his head when he finally figured out what was happening. "Actually, I can believe it. I just freaking can’t wrap my head around it." He slammed a file on his desk. Xingyu was on the other side, reclined on the seat and with Luna on his lap.
"What’s so unbelievable about it? Employees betray their bosses every time. It has happened more times than can be counted and this is why contracts should be as unreasonable as legally possible."
With the combined efforts of Xingyu, Luna and Xiehan, they had uncovered the culprit among the employees close enough to Xiehan’s office to know it inside and out. It turned out, his secretary had been offered a lump sum to sell the information to LX Corporation.
Xiehan was still frustrated. "That’s not the main point, okay? The main point is that my parents orchestrated this. That’s not even a day before they pulled that stunt they did at the hospital." He wanted to cut ties with them and it would never be enough to make up for the amount of distress they had caused him in just the last few days.
What did they think they could achieve by doing such a thing to their own company? Make him go back to his former house just so he would save the time difference to head to the company? Make him discuss company matters with them and by extension, have a heart to heart?
Neither of that was happening and now that he knew the truth, it was time to make an agreement with them. One that would probably hurt both sides emotionally but had to be done now before everything fell apart.
He wanted them to be out of his life completely—they would not even call him their son—and in exchange, he would make sure Feng Ji International remained at the top of its game.
He rolled his pen frantically. That would definitely solve many of his problems. But why did he keep having a nagging feeling that something was wrong?
Luna scrunched her face all of a sudden and looked like she was in pain. Then her expression calmed like nothing had happened.
"Are you okay, honey?" Xingyu was worried.
"Just the contractions. They happen all the time." She offered a smile but let alone convincing her husband, even she couldn’t convince herself of the lie she had just made up.
She didn’t want to believe her instinct but her stinging eyes betrayed her. "I don’t think Lanni is okay."
"Shit." Xiehan cursed, realizing just what he thought wasn’t right. Lanni was on her own with Xiaomu.
Luna stared ahead blankly. "What if your family did all this to keep you busy so they could hurt her?"
Her voice broke.
Xingyu embraced her, taking out her phone. "You are scaring yourself for nothing, sweetheart. Why don’t you give her a call? You will realize that everything is fine."
She grabbed her phone with trembling hands and dialed Lanni’s number. When it went straight to voicemail, her tears fell freely.
Xiehan tried too and failed. He grabbed his car keys and headed out of the office with his friend and sister-in-law hot on his heels.
He had not gotten to the car yet when an unfamiliar number called. When he learnt that it was the hospital, he gripped his phone in his hand and entered the car.
Luna stood rooted to the ground. "Is my baby alright?" She asked about Xiaomu.
"Yes." Xiehan answered faintly.
"What about my sister?"
His silence was enough confirmation.
Xingyu helped her into the car and while he knew it was probably not a good idea for her to see Lanni in whatever state she was in, it would be much worse if she only had to imagine it. She would probably think the worst.
___
At the hospital, Xiehan couldn’t help asking about Lanni’s condition every time he saw a doctor pass by.
He would get the same answer every time—that the doctors were doing their job or that they were performing an emergency procedure. But they wouldn’t tell him much.
Why wouldn’t they tell him clearly?
He sat on the waiting bench, his shoulders trembling as he sobbed. He should have stayed with her or brought her along to the company. Why did he leave her on her own? Since when was work more important than her?
A doctor finally left the emergency room and walked to him. "Are you the patient’s husband?"
He didn’t give a response, and Xingyu answered for him. "He is."
"Sir, you need to sign this." He showed a form on a clipboard.
Xingyu couldn’t take it either. "What the hell is he signing? What happened to my sister-in-law?" He demanded.
When the doctor finally explained the situation, he didn’t dare to glance at Xiehan or Luna.
"We are doing all we can but there is a chance that only one of them will make it. Either the mother or the child. If it comes to that, you have to choose whether you want us to save the mother or the child."
His words were like swords piercing into his heart. Was that really a choice? It wasn’t like they could do anything with a child in its first trimester. Wasn’t that just a polite way of asking him to sign off for them to let his child die?
"Sir, you need to hurry."
Xingyu would have given him a mouthful if it was not an emergency situation. The man was already this heartbroken. How could they ask him to sign?
Xiehan finally looked up lifelessly and grabbed the pen. "Save my wife."
The words were a soft plea before he broke down in regret. If only he had been more careful, none of this would be happening.
His signature had never felt longer before. He might as well sign his death sentence.
