"Lanni?" Xiehan woke up to the sound of her voice. It had happened several times already, he would be convinced that she was awake and had called out to him and when he woke up, she would still be asleep. But this time when he looked up, her eyes were open.

"Lanni!" He nearly couldn’t stop himself from hugging her tightly and only managed to control himself when he remembered that she shouldn’t be exerted.

"I’m sorry I made you worry so much." Her voice was close to a whisper. She ran her weak hand along his. "You already have so much to take care of with the company."

"Are you seriously thinking about the company right now?" He was shocked, and couldn’t stop himself from trailing his gaze down to her stomach. Did she know? He cursed inwardly when he realized that his action might be the one to let her know if she didn’t already.

However, she laughed it off when she realized what his gaze implied. "Why are you looking at me like that? I may have been rushed to the emergency room but our baby is doing just fine. He has never been better."

Then she ran a shaky hand down her stomach with a soft smile. "Right, baby?"

"Lanni..." His heart broke seeing her like this.

"It’s going to be a girl and she will be our little angel." She continued, then changed her mind immediately. "On second thought, I think it will be a boy. He will be our little hero and..."

"Lanni..." He interrupted, but she didn’t stop.

"When he’s older, he will be all over Luna’s child since they will be agemates."

He held her hand and didn’t dare to meet her gaze.

Meanwhile, outside.

"Aren’t you going in?" Xinghe asked Luna, who had already gone through the precautionary procedure to see Lanni. They had seen from the glass door that she had woken up and were holding back their excitement even though they couldn’t wait to see her, while Luna looked lost.

Xinghe held her to comfort her. "Well, you heard what the doctor said. It’s a delicate situation but there’s still a chance that the baby will make it too."

"A slim chance." She emphasized. She didn’t think any doctor would simply state that the chances were miniscule. She would be relieved if the said slim chances worked in Lanni’s favor, and she would be happier than ever. However, that would not change a thing.

"If I didn’t insist on going to Feng Ji International, I would not have left her alone." She hugged her arms.

Xinghe placed a hand on her shoulder. "Look. The only one to blame here is that drunk rider. And Lanni, for letting go of Mumu’s hand."

"What?" Luna pulled away from her in shock. "How could you say such a thing? My sister loves Mumu more than anyone would love their own daughter. She means the world to her. If she knew that such a thing would happen, do you think she would let go of Mumu?

Heck, you know how adventurous Mumu can get. She always has somewhere else she wants to be and new things to explore. It’s a literal chore to be able to stop her from going anywhere for five minutes." She raged, not believing what her mother-in-law had said. "If Lanni knew that there is a possibility of such a thing happening, she would never have left the house with Mumu.

And she was under no obligation to save my daughter. She could have let her..." She squeezed her eyes shut, not bearing to say it out aloud. "She risked her life and her child’s to save my daughter’s. So with all due respect mother, take back what you just said, go in there and apologize to Lanni."

Xinghe remained standing on the same spot for a while, before she held her hands up in surrender. "I’m sorry. For using that kind of approach. You see, you love your sister so much. You would never deliberately hurt her or her child."

Finally realizing that Xinghe had said what she did just to make her see the point, she threw herself into her arms in relief. "Mother! I thought you actually meant it."

"To blame the victim? Never." She smiled. "So, are you still scared of facing her?"

Luna tucked her hair back into the net. "If this blows up, I’m blaming you."

Xinghe laughed and let her go.

She was right. When Lanni saw Luna, she was relieved.

"You are finally here, Luna. Is Mumu okay?"

Luna nodded. "She is outside and will be let in next." She sat next to the bed guiltily. "Lanni, I’m..."

"Don’t you dare." Lanni interrupted her and broke into a smile. "You never planned for any of this to happen. I’m just happy that nothing happened to Mumu.

"Mother found the security footage. The biker has been caught."

"That’s great news. What about the company?"

Luna felt awkward talking about random topics. "Well, we caught the rat. Hey, I shouldn’t take up too much of your time. Mother, Xingyu and the kids want to see you too. Mumu is worried about you."

"Let her in." Lanni smiled.

Then everyone got to see her one at a time, since Xiehan didn’t look like he was willing to move an inch away from her bed.

When they finally left, he squeezed her hand gently. "Xichen will be here soon."

"Why is Xichen coming?" She was confused.

"Because I still trust his skills more? If you don’t mind, I would like him to check on you and the baby."

She swatted his hand away playfully. "Honey, I already told you. The baby is fine. I may not have been a good enough mother before but he’s going to give me a second chance."

Then she let her hand drop to her stomach again. Right, baby?

It broke his heart seeing her like this. He knew that it had lottlw6 to do with hanging on a sliver of hope and a lot to do with being in denial. If this baby was really lost, she would never be able to recover from the blow. So he hoped it wouldn’t come to that. He had never been a spiritual person but all of a sudden, he wanted to try. Maybe the heavens would grant him this one wish for the sake of his wife.
