The Rising Phoenix-Chapter 919: Arrived At The Lotus City
Bai Xifeng did not want unnecessary chaos to occur if others caught sight of Cerberus. When she spotted the trading post appearing ahead, she carefully gathered Zhang Mingzhu in her arms and leapt down gracefully from the Cerberus’s broad back.
"Cerberus, you may leave now." Bai Xifeng stated calmly.
In an instant, Cerberus vanished into thin air.
"Sister Bai, where did he disappear to so suddenly?" Zhang Mingzhu asked, her eyes wide with curiosity.
"Well, he simply went to get some well-deserved rest." Bai Xifeng answered casually, offering a mysterious smile.
The group successfully purchased a sturdy new carriage and prepared themselves to continue their long journey. As the carriage began to move slowly forward once again, Zhang Mingzhu leaned her head against Bai Xifeng’s shoulder.
"Sister Bai." Zhang Mingzhu called out softly.
"Yes?" Bai Xifeng responded.
"When we finally reach Lotus City... will you stay with us for a while?" Zhang Mingzhu asked hopefully.
"I might stay for at least a few days." Bai Xifeng replied.
In truth, she absolutely needed to stay for a while. She wanted to personally meet Si Tang’s mother, as she was deeply curious about the mysterious illness the woman was suffering from.
Upon hearing this, Zhang Mingzhu immediately clapped her hands together in delight. "Really?!"
"Hmm..." Bai Xifeng responded with a small, affirming nod.
However, Bai Xifeng’s eyes quietly turned thoughtful once more. She knew that once they arrived at Lotus City, the situation would only become far more complicated.
Meanwhile, somewhere far away inside a grand residence in Lotus City, a beautifully dressed woman listened intently to a report from a servant who was kneeling submissively before her.
"Are you saying... that the assassins failed in their mission?"
"Yes, Madam."
The woman’s expression darkened slowly, her features twisting with rage.
"So, Si Tang is still alive." Her fingers tightened like a vice around the delicate teacup in her hand.
Crack. The fine porcelain cup shattered into pieces.
"That bitch is truly tougher than I thought." She remarked coldly. "In that case, it seems I will have to deal with this matter personally."
...
The group finally arrived at the gates of Lotus City. Yao Huifang suggested that Bai Xifeng should stay at her house for the night, noting that she could go to the Si Residence the following day. Bai Xifeng did not mind the arrangement, as long as she had a comfortable place to stay.
Si Tang, however, intended to go straight home. She wanted to return as fast as she possibly could because she was desperate to see her mother. Only by seeing her mother with her own eyes could she finally breathe calmly. Not to mention, her father’s concubine had likely already received news that the assassination attempt had failed. Si Tang feared that the vicious woman might try to do something terrible to her mother while she was away.
Consequently, the carriage dropped Si Tang at her house first before turning back toward the Zhang Residence. As soon as they stepped inside the house, a loud, booming voice began to scold Yao Huifang.
"Woman, where have you been running around? Why did you not return home yesterday? Were you out having fun with another man?" A man’s voice repeatedly accused her, his tone dripping with suspicion. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺
Yao Huifang immediately called for a maid to take Zhang Mingzhu away first. The young girl seemed terrified of the shouting. She hid behind her mother’s legs, fearfully peeking her head out.
Yao Huifang gently pushed her daughter toward her most trusted maid. Although Zhang Mingzhu wanted to stay by her mother’s side, Yao Huifang assured her that she would join her shortly. Eventually, the young girl left the room.
A man and a woman soon emerged, clinging to each other as they approached Yao Huifang. The man glared at his wife with open hostility, while the woman beside him wore a provocative, mocking smile.
"Zhang Minglu, I already explained to you that I had important business in Tian City. And I was not with other men. I was with Si Tang." Yao Huifang explained firmly.
"Humph! Who knows if you are actually telling the truth?" Zhang Minglu scoffed.
"I am not like you. And I am quite sure that you have not been lonely while I was gone, since this woman has been keeping you company." Yao Huifang stated.
"Yao Huifang, what exactly do you mean by that?" Zhang Minglu became furious the moment he heard those words.
"I am saying that I have no interest in pursuing a relationship with anyone else. I prefer to keep myself clean." Yao Huifang said.
She clearly implied that Zhang Minglu was a dirty person who lacked any sense of standards.
Zhang Minglu was about to shout a response to her insult when the woman beside him leaned over and whispered something into his ear. He listened to the woman’s words and looked over, surprised to notice the stunningly beautiful woman standing beside Yao Huifang.
"Yao Huifang, I see now that you finally understand me." Zhang Minglu said, his anger turning into a greedy smile.
"What are you talking about?" Yao Huifang frowned, completely confused by his sudden change in attitude.
"You brought me a new concubine." Zhang Minglu smiled even more widely. He turned his gaze toward Bai Xifeng. "Come here, sweetheart."
"What the hell are you talking about?" Yao Huifang snapped, immediately stepping forward to shield Bai Xifeng behind her.
