Chapter 906: Borrowed Time

Princess Kira was afloat.

Not literally, but in a metaphysical way that even had her toes curling in disbelief.

She had been like that for nearly half an hour after officially going through a rite of passage.

Her first kiss.

And honestly, who could blame her when even D-29—who had references upon references—thought it was a cinematic masterpiece.

She could still remember the moment everything stilled.

The world seemed to pause in the exact second he leaned in. Not with the bravado of someone who knew exactly what he was doing, but with the earnest desire of someone who had thought about this moment far too many times but still couldn’t quite believe it was happening even as their lips touched.

It was soft. Unexpected. Perfect in a way that made her heart forget how to beat for a brief, terrifying moment. The kind of kiss that people probably tried to write about.

Suddenly, she understood all those complaints about kissing scenes feeling inadequately described. Because what kind of words would she personally use to illustrate the rush that swept through her body?

From her lips down to her toes, she felt electrified.

By the time they pulled apart, the Princess realized she had forgotten to breathe.

Her lungs burned. Her cheeks were on fire. Her head felt light, like she might actually float away if she weren’t careful. It took her a full second to remember where she was and another full second to remember how to stand.

And even now, she was still stuck in the moment as she brought a finger to her lips.

She knew they were discussing extremely grating topics. In fact, she now had a face for the bastard who almost ruined her life. But with something performing undignified little sprints in her chest, it was really difficult to concentrate.

Haaaay!

Apparently, her Bunbun had it in him. He may have been a little timid and needed to learn more about self-love, but he most definitely had it in him.

A certain aide would have choked at the thought of his boss being labeled timid, but unfortunately for him, he was far too busy buying time before they had to return to follow the official schedule. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

Rahil didn’t actually want to interrupt the very fruitful and long-overdue conversation.

He, too, wanted to continue ranting about the kind of bullshit they had experienced and endured since Prince Eren went off the rails. The words had been flowing freely for a while now, and Rahil wasn’t eager to be the one to dam the flood.

While Rahil had started to answer questions pertinent to the Prince’s condition, he was fully aware that these people deserved more than just selective responses. They deserved the truth. After everything they had done—after making this reunion even possible—the very least they could be given was an honest explanation.

Normally, he would have kept quiet for the sake of safety and survival. But after learning about the parasite that could have killed them all, the elven aide found that silence simply wasn’t an option anymore.

Heck, the world deserved to know.

"It’s an extremely delayed greeting, but still, I’d like to properly introduce myself," Elior began, his voice calm but firm. "I am Elior Severin Aetheryon, deposed Crown Prince of the Lumirian Elves."

Rahil actually got chills.

Hearing those words aloud—hearing his boss say them in front of others—felt like the first crack in the massive wall they had built to keep everything inside. But it was also the first step forward. The only step that mattered now.

And when Elior went on to talk about his bloodline ability, about the kind of fortune it brought and the curse that came with it, Rahil knew there really was no going back.

Oddly enough, he felt lighter. Relieved, even. Maybe later, after all the adrenaline faded and his limbs remembered how tired they were, he could find a nice place to crash and deal with his feelings.

But that moment was not now.

Because the relief couldn’t last forever. They had already disappeared for too long.

Rahil would have liked nothing more than to live inside DG’s booth forever. If he could, he would have set up a tent and claimed a corner with good lighting and moderate foot traffic. But Prince Eren’s minions were persistent, and they had clearly decided it was time to start being a nuisance.

"Your Highness," Rahil finally cut in, grimacing as he delivered the bad news. "I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this is already the fifth message from your brother’s lackeys."

"If we don’t show up soon, they’re going to start looking for us."

That line earned him a collective turn of heads.

Everyone in the room, a mix of people sitting and standing, paused to look at him. And just like that, Rahil became the most interesting person present.

Even Princess Kira, who had been floating in a love-induced haze since earlier, snapped back to reality. Her eyes widened, alarm and fury crashing into her expression like a tidal wave.

"What?!" she blurted out, sounding one breath away from tackling someone. She looked like she was ready to throw herself around the Prince and physically keep him in place.

Rahil sighed heavily. As if he wanted to go back to those idiots, either.

Thankfully, he didn’t have to explain further. His boss picked up where he left off.

"Unfortunately, we’re under heavy surveillance. The only reason they haven’t asserted full control is because we’re being watched by two different groups."

"Two?" Princess Kira echoed, blinking in confusion.

Elior nodded, lips tilting up into a small smile. "We’ve got Eren’s subordinates, and then we’ve got the Imperial guards."

"If Eren wants to sell the story that I’m still capable of acting with some autonomy, he can’t afford to have reports showing I’m being strictly policed by my own people. So officially, his subordinates are only there to guard me."

"But they would absolutely raise a fuss if I missed the schedule laid out for the foreign delegation," he continued. "The only reason they haven’t come looking yet is that we’re already showing up as present within the venue."

"With everyone being aware of how long it would really take to get from the end of the line to the free sample counter, it wouldn’t be unusual that we hadn’t moved from this place."

A perfectly reasonable cover that had given him this opportunity.

"But if we miss the call time, they’d have grounds to act," he said, turning to Princess Kira.

Kira looked stunned. Then annoyed. Then ready to start a riot.

"You’re actually leaving?" she asked, her voice climbing a notch. "But you just got here! What if they drag you away again?"

She looked like she wanted to punch someone. Hopefully not the messenger, but possibly all of Eren’s followers and the mad Prince himself.

But in the eyes of one Elven Prince, the fury in her gaze only made his heart soften.

"He has the rest of our family," Elior said, gentler this time. "Especially my little sister. So even if I really don’t want to leave, I have to buy time until I can figure out how to get her out."

"And to buy time, I need to feign cooperation."

Then again, just how long could this go on?
