Chapter 33: Definitely needs more than a kick

"Is he the one, Cheon Areum?"

"Fucking hell, you’re really just dilly-dallying around without a single worry."

Cheon Areum kept his eyes locked on the man before him. The figure stood there casually, gazing down at him—if one could even call it a gaze—with eyes completely hidden behind a fall of hair. The energy radiating from him matched Cheon Areum’s... no, it might have even surpassed it.

Crouching down to catch his breath, Cheon Areum reached up to check whether the hairstyle Rian had carefully done for him before going to school had survived the reckless flight through the sky. A few strands had slipped loose from the French braids.

That alone was enough to irritate him—but somehow, it still didn’t piss him off as much as the man standing in front of him, his eyes completely hidden behind that curtain of hair.

"Call Yoon Seoyul and tell him we’ve found the new awakener."

He said it casually to Han Kakta, who had already lifted his phone and started dialing before Cheon Areum even finished speaking.

"And there’s an S+ Class gate here too," Cheon Areum added. Straightening fully, he stepped forward. His hands rested behind his back threads of black energy quietly slipped free, spreading along the ground in delicate, creeping lines. They were thin enough to escape notice. Thin enough that only he would sense them... unless the person in front of him was paying very close attention. His gaze remained fixed on the man.

"Do you have some kind of link to this gate? Or did it simply catch your interest, and you decided to take a stroll inside?"

Cheon Areum asked mildly. He stopped a short distance away, voice steady, polite even.

"Either way, if you’re planning to go inside the gate, that would be convenient for us. But you’ll need to register as a hunter first. Unregistered awakeners aren’t allowed to enter gates."

"Why do I need to register? I like freedom more."

At the man’s response, Cheon Areum’s eyes narrowed.

...Right.

That really was the kind of thing a villain would say, wasn’t it?

"Ah—wait."

Cheon Areum said, lifting one finger.

"Quick quiz. You don’t get to skip this part."

"Question one."

Cheon Areum continued pacing a step to the side, black energy subtly adjusting its position with him.

"Do you know what happens when an unregistered S+ awakener casually stands in front of an unguarded S+ gate?"

The man didn’t answer. Cheon Areum smiled faintly. Not warm. Slightly friendly.

"You will be fined heavily and your actions will be seen as you wanting to act out against the government. It will cause political headaches. Emergency meetings."

He tilted his head.

"And usually, someone Yoon Seoyul me gets very annoyed."

As he is the main character and a villain would be his headache too and then it will ultimately be his own headache. Without pausing Cheon Areum spoke out again.

"Question two, Do you want to be considered a threat?"

The black vines beneath the dirt hide into his sleeves as he held his fist out of the mouth of the man like a microphone for him to speak in. However the man still had nothing to say. Cheon Areum’s gaze sharpened, voice dropping just a fraction.

"And last question, Are you planning to go into that gate... or were you planning to make me stop you?"

He lowered his hand, his expression turning cold—completely unamused by the man’s antics.

"You wanted me to come here, didn’t you?"

The same moment Cheon Areum asked him in a low voice Han Kakta called out urgently from behind him. Acting on instinct, Cheon Areum immediately wrapped the man in his energy, black threads locking around him so he couldn’t suddenly disappear. A small smile tugged at the man’s lips—subtle, almost pleased.

"Cheon Areum, Come here. Listen to me for a second."

Cheon Areum didn’t take his eyes off the man, his energy tightening just a fraction more, testing. Either this man was just dumb as fuck or this wasn’t someone who had been caught at all. On Han Kakta’s insistence he finally turned around to find Han Kakta standing close to the S+ Class gate with his phone to ear signaling with his hand to come over there.

Perhaps Han Kakta didn’t want the man to overhear their conversation, but he still didn’t need to stand so close to the gate. If it were guarded, none of them would have been allowed anywhere near it.

Cheon Areum walked over, intending to pull Han Kakta away from the gate—but the moment he stopped in front of him, Han Kakta started speaking.

"Yoon Seoyul... told me... to wait..."

The forced pauses only made Cheon Areum’s eyes narrow with irritation at Han Kakta.

"Why are you talking so stiffly...?"

Could it be that Han Kakta was being affected by the presence of two S+ awakeners and an S+-Class gate?

Sensing that something was wrong, Cheon Areum turned back toward the new awakener—but before he could react, Han Kakta suddenly shoved him forward and he stumbled straight into the S+ Class gate by accident or more so he couldn’t avoid it at all as he was caught off guard.

The daylight instantly disappeared, swallowed by the dark sky of the dungeon that now welcomed him. A strong gust of wind ruffled his hair, making him flinch. Cheon Areum immediately turned around, ready to exit the gate before it could close—but a hand shot out from the shadows, gripping his shoulder, stopping him in his tracks and slowly, the new awakener stepped through the gate, his face emerged from the darkness, framed by the faint flicker of energy lingering in the air, and his voice cut through the heavy wind.

"I heard you were looking for me, Cheon Areum."

The time limit for the S+ Class gate’s closure was forty seconds. Counting each second in his mind, Cheon Areum didn’t spare a thought for why Han Kakta had shoved him inside—there was no room for questions now. Every ounce of his focus was on escaping.

His hand shot out, grabbing the one still clutching his shoulder. With a precise twist and a powerful heave, he flung the new awakener’s body into the dungeon. The man collided with the massive, solid gate looming ahead, the impact reverberating through the air.

Cheon Areum’s heart pounded in sync with the ticking seconds, every fiber of his body alert as the gate began its inevitable countdown. With 25 seconds to spare he exited the gate immediately only to be pushed back inside by Han Kakta again who used every ounce of strength, he stopped him fast, determined not to let him get away by any means. Pushed inside a second time Cheon Areum’s energy shot out to corrupt Han Kakta into submission and letting him exit when the new awakener behind him had already risen to his feet, he closed the distance and slammed Cheon Areum away from the gate, the force sending him skidding across the dungeon floor.

Cheon Areum dropped his body just in time, narrowly avoiding a brutal collision with the silver metal gate standing ominously inside the dungeon. He stopped himself with a hand pressed firmly against the ground the dirt brushing against his palm feeling the vibration of the impact ripple through his hand as he stabilized his stance.

"I just want to talk with you why are you so scared?"

The man strolled forward lazily, each step unhurried, as Cheon Areum rose to his feet. His gaze first fell on the black gate, now fully closed behind him, its dark surface humming faintly with residual energy. Then he looked back at the man, calm, unflinching.

"Scared of what? You...or the dungeon?"

Although he had wanted to avoid getting stuck inside an S+ class dungeon with this new awakener and he didn’t have a source of energy with him if this man attacked him even after all the daunted odds stacked against him Cheon Areum actually didn’t feel any fear whatsoever as if he had just stepped into his home he was particularly relaxed. Sensing the negative energy seething behind the silver metal gate, Cheon Areum instinctively stepped back, keeping his distance from its looming presence. He brushed at his white clothes, wiping away the streaks of dirt and dust that had clung to them during the scuffle.

"Never underestimate your opponents as you said...but I think I stand a chance against you."

"What a creepy hobby you have..."

While Cheon Areum had been searching for this man he had been stalking him all along is that it? Standing facing each other A gust of wind swept past, tossing aside the curtain of hair that had hidden the man’s face. His eyes glowed a dark, molten orange. A sign that he was already using his abilities.

"You know what this reminds me of?"

The man began, his gaze flicking toward the dirt-streaked ground between them.

"Back when Yoon Seoyul was still an unaffiliated hunter. Even as an S-Class, his skills weren’t flashy or eye-catching, so the higher-ups underestimated him at every turn."
