Chapter 29: At Dusk, The Moon Shines

This abyssal color, those black holes that had lowered themselves to eyes. A body as tall as a mountain but as slim as a stick. Was it because we entered The Core almost at the same time? No, if that was the case there would be more people here.

But then what explanation was there? I laughed, there was none, the only thing that could bind it to reality was fate. And a wicked one at that.

A few moments later we were left alone, and with this the atmosphere became awkward. But as a king, I had to show my superiority, so I decided to be the first one to talk. But, that chance was taken from me the moment I heard his low voice.

"I'm taking the bed." A simple choice of words spoke out with such bluntness. Yet I was leaning toward this way of talking way more than how Rune spoke.

I stared at him with a dumbfounded expression which probably did the exact opposite of making my authority shine.

'No, you're not! I was here first.' I quickly said to regain myself in this fierce battle that would determine if I would sleep like a baby or not.

"Well, I called dibs, so I don't care." His expression had remained from beginning to end, making me look a little depressed getting so easily flustered. The same gaze, piercing with confidence and ego.

If I looked at it this way, we were really alike. After all, we were both shooting an arrow at a shield by going full pride in the place that is known to feast from it.

So why would anyone sane choose this? No one, no sane person would do this. But it's not like anyone who decides to enter The Core is completely sane, the people who cling to their pride are just the worst of them.

But if The Core devours pride, wouldn't that make it the good guy in this story, after all, pride is a sin for a reason. Or did it make it a god? Able to devour sin by killing its host. Was The Core a divine being, or just a place made out of humanity's wish for its existence?

Many people consider The Core just made to destroy sloth. After all, humanity had been at the top of the food chain for centuries, and the lack of competition bored them, so they wished for something to cause their evolution, a challenge.

Of course, a reasonable candidate would have been a virus, but that was too blunt, so human imagination went wild, thinking of millions of possibilities for their own existence. And with their belief of one of these thing actually happening, The Core was born. Born from human belief.

"You know... you're really creepy when you do this." These words woke me up to reality, I had to stop getting myself caught up in daydreaming.

'Aw, that's funny, are you really uncomfortable from a little staring?' My words were clearly meant to tease him, but his darkened expression made me think I had touched a sensitive spot.

'Alright I'm sorry... just forget it.' Man, I can't understand human emotion, and how you can get to such a vulnerable state in seconds. But at the same time, this could serve as an advantage later. Well, it would have done if I wasn't in a human body.

But as I was contemplating my decision, I was met by a flying pillow which hit me right in the face. After realizing what had happened I looked back at him, and I saw the cockiest smile I have ever seen a human have.

'Damn you!' I grabbed the pillow and threw it back at him, which quickly led to a fight that lasted for some time. Like a fight between cats, we exchanged attacks left and right, all without technique, just what felt right, what could inflict the most damage the fastest.

I found myself laying down on the hard floor, meanwhile that asshole comfortably rested on my bed. I had lost. I felt a tear crawl down my face onto the ground, but I quickly hid it. How could a king like me lose to this guy?

"My name is Dusk by the way." I turned to him surprised by his sudden remark, was he opening up to me? Or did he feel bad from before?

'I see, you can call my Moon like the others I guess.' I said a little embarrassed. I tried to hide this fact, but my red cheek betrayed me.

"Moon? Interestingly, from what I know there's a guard here that shares that name.' His tone seemed sincere, so I decided to take his word on this.

'Really? What a coincidence.' I said trying to leave behind this topic, as it wasn't that interesting.

"You don't really think that do you." The only person who could have seen through my disguise is someone who is also used to using the same one. Which made me wonder how much we really had in common.

'Caught me red-handed.' We shared a friendly laugh. 'There isn't something like coincidence in this place, it simply doesn't exist. It's just an excuse people use to decrease the tension or whatever.'

I rolled to my side, thinking about how the lines connected, and how things were starting to make sense, but at the same time, they didn't.

"You know, I have lost my brother inside this place." That was something I never expected him to tell me, after all, we were just some strangers that just held some similarities.

"Thing is, I can't recall any memory of him. It's like it never existed. The only way I even know about his existence is a family photo, but even in it his face is blurry."

So this kid was part of the few who lost their memories of their loved one after being devoured in The Core. I guess this explained the lack of life inside his eyes.

"That's why I came here, to see the full story. To discover the truth." What a selfless goal, risking yourself for others.

If only mine was that way.
