Chapter 89: Forming teams

Derek looked around. "Time might be short but you should all rest. If this goes wrong... we won’t get a second chance."

Then he turned to leave. "I’ll go and inform the others about the plan."

They all agreed.

They had work to do and this work isn’t so kind as to forgive mistakes.

The fortress city’s war hall was packed.

Over thirty gold-rank rogue awakeners from the Loose Leash sat or leaned against the stone benches, all staring at the projected map pinned to the front wall. Some were sharpening weapons, others were munching on fruits, but all were listening.

Derek stood at the center with Princess Doris and Sairi by his side.

"Here’s the situation," Derek said clearly. "Two tyrants. Both mutant types. We don’t know their powers. We don’t know their limits. But we do know they’re heading toward population zones. That gives us no time."

Sairi stepped forward. "You all came here for a reason. I won’t waste your time. We need teams. One group hits the avian-headed mutant in the forest. The other handles the elephant-type near the ruins."

Derek nodded. "Sairi and I will each lead a team. If anyone has a preference, speak now."

No one moved, nobody dared to because they could feel the epic aura coming from Sairi. While Derek might be gold rank the same as them but he was a famous figure and everyone knew about his strength.

Then one tall man with a scar across his lip spoke. "Doesn’t matter who leads. We’re not here for glory. Just give us a clear chain of command and a place to hit."

A few others grunted in agreement.

Derek smiled slightly. "Good. We’ll divide by specialization."

He pointed to the map. "Forest group, you’ll need fast movers, scouts, and people with ranged power. The terrain’s tight and have no room for bulky clashes."

"Ruins team, you’ll need heavy hitters and tanky types. There’s open ground and a lot of stone. You’ll be able to go all out."

He looked around. "Form up. Talk to the ones you trust. Teams of five to seven. Pick your leaders. Then report to me or Sairi. We’re not micromanaging. But once the fight starts, no solo plays. Understood?"

A chorus of nods and low affirmations spread around the room.

Kaelen whispered to Neal, "Now this feels like a real operation."

Neal replied, "It ’is’ a real operation."

Princess Doris stepped forward next. "I’ve ordered our fortress units to back you from a distance. Medical tents and emergency reinforcements are ready. We owe you everything."

"No offense, Your Highness," one rogue muttered, "but let’s just make sure there’s a kingdom left to thank us when this is over."

A low chuckle passed through the room.

Derek raised a hand. "Everyone get two hours rest. Then we move."

Sairi added, "We won’t get a second chance. If anyone thinks they can’t handle this, now’s the time to step back."

No one moved.

After the main briefing, the hall buzzed as the teams began to form around the two leads.

Derek leaned over the table, scanning the map. His sword hung lightly at his side, a weapon built more for speed than power. His eyes locked onto the terrain around the forest zone.

"I’ll take the forest team," he said. "It suits my style better. Alira, you’re with me."

Alira nodded without hesitation, adjusting the straps on her twin daggers. "Good. I prefer trees over stones anyway."

Her tone was calm, but her eyes burned with anticipation.

Sairi let out a dry chuckle. "Then the ruins are mine. Perfect."

Standing tall in gleaming black-and-silver armor, Sairi looked like a knight from ancient paintings. But behind her sharp voice and merchant air was raw physical power, the kind that could bring down buildings.

Kaitlin, silent until now, walked over and stood beside her aunt.

Sairi glanced at her. "You coming?"

Kaitlin adjusted the massive greatsword strapped across her back. "Of course. Someone has to clean up after you."

"Thought you’d chicken out."

Neal took one last look at the forest route, then stepped toward the ruins team.

"I’ll go with you too," he said. "Destruction works better with space."

No one argued.

Kaelen stood near the wall, arms crossed and with a twisted face. "Guess that leaves me as bench support."

Neal smiled. "It’s destiny bro, you are meant to heal others, leave the limelight to me, I shine better than you."

Kaelen gave an annoyed smirk. "I’m not healing you this time even if you begged for it and we shall see whose light shines brighter."

"What about me?" Alira said.

Kaelen said half jokingly. "Of course, my healings are always for you."

Derek looked back. "Kaelen, stay at the command post. Monitor everything. Heal who you can, if needed. And stay alert."

Kaelen gave a lazy salute. "On it, General."

Once the details were sorted, the deployment was made clear.

The Loose Leash wasn’t just any rogue group. These were gold-rank awakeners with terrifying records. Almost everyone here had cleared over a hundred gold-ranked dungeons. Most were old, calm, and experienced. There was no flashy armor or loud mouths, just the quiet confidence of a veteran.

The group was split into three:

Team Derek – Forest Strike Team

Total: 14 members

Type: High Mobility Warriors and Casters

This team was made for fast movement and surgical attacks. Warriors with fast blades, dual wielders, archers and ranged damage dealers, and terrain experts.

Derek led them, light on his feet and deadly with his sword. Alira followed him closely, silent and focused. The forest would be their battlefield, perfect for flanking, trapping, and quick execution.

Team Sairi – Ruin Assault Team

Total: 17 members

Type: High Damage Dealers and Tanks

Heavy weapons, shield bearers, explosive casters, and berserkers formed the core of this group. All strong enough to level buildings.

Sairi took the lead, her voice sharp and her movements heavier than steel. Beside her was Kaitlin, her niece, a monster in her own right with a two-handed greatsword. Neal rounded out the trio, his steps calm but carrying the raw power of a living weapon.

The ruins were open and dangerous, perfect for unleashing destruction.

Team Kaelen – Rear Support and Base

Total: 8 members including Kaelen

Type: Medical & Transport Support

Kaelen stayed behind with Princess Doris and seven others provided by the kingdom. Out of the seven, three were full-time healers, and the other four were dedicated teleporters, meant only to retrieve wounded from the battlefield.

Kaelen role wasn’t to fight, not now. He was to monitor, support, and respond if needed. And he didn’t like staying back. He lounged near the medical station, keeping his mana stable and his senses alert.

Even without the frontlines, he knew his job was just as important.

As the sun rose high, the teams moved out, quiet, efficient, and fast. There were no loud speeches or flashy send-offs. Everyone knew their role. Everyone was ready.

Thirty-some rogue gold-rankers. A few elites. Two leaders against Two mutant tyrants.

Chaos of high tier and grand battle was about to unleash once again.
