Chapter 40: 40. Not Regret It

Her expression darkened as she saw him, even though she knew he was coming it still didn't make it easier to see him. He couldn't look her in the eye as he stood with the tub outside the door.

Vae made way for Mack to go into the room. He passed her without any eye contact and placed the tub on the ground. He still kept his head low but he wasn't leaving the room.

Vae raised a brow but didn't say anything, she just stared. The last time he had gotten provoked because she spoke back, she really wasn't interested in shenanigans. If her peace of mind meant she wouldn't say a word to him even if it meant listening to his horse crap, she could easily do it.

Last night had ended without incident as she had expected but she knew better than to step on the tail of a rattlesnake. She knew her place, nobody knew that better than she did.

Nobody was going to go to war if a maid ended up dead. They would get another one, it was easier and certainly cheaper. The King might make a fuss because it would go against the treaty, however, the compensation would be meager.

"Anything else?" The princess called out.

Vae blinked at the tone of her voice. The princess was angry and Vae could guess why. It was completely her fault. Of course, the princess knew her duty more than anyone, she didn't need a maid reminding her about what needed to be done.

However, she was desperate and by the looks of things, she would not be able to leave any time. She would speed things up if she could and at this point, her desperation was becoming obvious.

"Yes," he said softly. "The Sire asks that you join him for the first meal."

Vae turned to see Mauve suddenly tense up. She didn't say anything and Mack left the room. Vae watched him go before she approached the princess. "Would you like me to help you?"

"No," she said a little too forcefully.

Vae bowed her head and took a step back. Mauve untied the robe and took it off before she took off the inner and her underwear. She walked toward the tub and stepped into it without help.

Vae rushed to her side and quickly began to scrub her clean. Vae quickly washed the princess, she washed her hair and her body as diligently as she could. When she was done, she helped her out of the water and dried her up.

She sat by the dresser and Vae rubbed lotion all over her body and put perfume oil in all the vital places. The back of her ears, the sides of her neck, her wrists, she was about to put some in the back of the Princess's elbow when she protested.

"I am trying to smell good, not choke him to death."

"I am sorry," she apologized and quickly closed the bottle. She placed it on the dresser and helped the Princess into the dress she had chosen. The princess didn't even complain when she tightened the corset. Vae knew how much she hated them.

"How would you like your hair?"

"Down, I am in no mood to be all styled up."

"I see," Vae took the brush and brushed it. She parted the hair in the middle and tucked some behind the princess's ears. "All done," she announced.

"That would be all," she said without making eye contact with Vae . she just stared at her reflection, completely ignoring Vae who stood behind her.

Vae walked out of the room, she stopped at the door, her hand on the handle. She turned around. "Princess, I am sorry for what I said earlier."

"It is fine, Vae. I really don't want to talk about it. I will call you when I need you."

Vae bowed again, the princess didn't just dismiss her, she also could not show up in her room unless she was called. She closed the door and her head was still bowed. She stood in front of the door for a few seconds before she made her way downstairs.

She rubbed her wrists as she walked, she was grateful the princess didn't need her hair done wrist was killing her. It wasn't as sore as the night before but it still hurt enough for it to be a nuisance.

She had bathed the princess quickly to get it over with before her hands would stop moving because of the pain. It wasn't swollen, she was grateful for that but it stung like hell and it got in the way of her work.

"Vae. Vae!" she heard a voice say and turned to see Mill rushing to her with a bowl. "Your first meal or as you humans would say, breakfast."

Vae stared at the bowl, "We usually don't have breakfast by sundown. Thank you," she said and accepted it.

She continued walking. She was headed to her room, not her room, the room she was assigned to. As she walked away, she hoped she would have to stay here for another week, she would lose her mind.

She got to the door and pushed it open, it was dark. One of the things she hated about this place was the constant darkness. It made her feel sick. Not being able to go out in the sun made her feel diseased.

She walked to the window and threw it open. Thankfully, the sun had a beautiful glow. She stared up at it for a couple of minutes before she walked away and lit up the candles in her room.

She sat on the ground with her bowl of food and dug in. It was pretty tasty. She had to admit that they had better dishes than in the castle but it still wasn't enough reason for her to live like this. She could not wait to leave. She hated that she would leave the princess by herself but she would not regret it.
