Chapter 41: 41. Breakfast in The Night

Mauve heard a knock but did not move from where she sat, she could not tell how long she had sat in front of the dresser. She stared at her unmoving reflection. Vae's words had reminded her of the things she had forgotten, that this was duty.

It didn't help that earlier she had gone against his order, it would have been enough grounds to send her back. There was also the fact that she could have been severely injured from the fall.

Mauve sighed and stood to her feet. She checked her reflection one more time, the candlelight gave her a golden hue. She practiced her smile, she had to find a way to uplift her mood. She could not appear in front of her husband in such a gloomy state, it would ruin the food for everyone.

Happy with the smile on her face, she held it and walked to the door. She turned the handle to find a servant standing just outside her door. "The first meal is ready," he announced.

"Thank you," Mauve said and walked past him. She grabbed the front of her dress and lifted it a little just in case there could be an incident of tripping. She walked to the stairs with purpose, she could hear the servant following behind her.

She got to the dining room and a guard opened the door for her. She walked in to find Jael already seated. She curtsied and he eyed her oddly. She walked past him and made to sit two seats away from him as she had done the first time they ate together. A servant rushed forward and pulled her seat backward. She sat comfortably before looking up at Jael.

"I am assuming you slept well," he said, she could feel his eyes trailing the upper part of her body.

She nodded and looked downwards, she must be nuts because she thought he looked particularly handsome today. She could not deny that he looked in a shirt. Not that she had any complaints about him being shirtless. Mauve internally smacked herself, she must be nuts.

The servant approached the table and opened the dishes. Mauve felt her mouth water, the smell was absolutely delicious, and she could not wait to dig in.

"That's good. When you fled earlier, I was afraid of an incident but I am glad you got to your room okay." Jael said, his eyes did not leave her as he spoke.

Mauve looked up to find him staring, she reddened and quickly brought her head down. She was annoyed that he was teasing her about the fact that she constantly tripped and at the same time, she was embarrassed about what had happened in the library.

Mauve did not answer instead, she dug into her food, making sure to keep her eyes down. She sliced into the omelet and put a huge chunk into her mouth. The sweet and salty taste melted on her tongue and Mauve groaned.

She looked up to see Jael raising a brow at her but he didn't say anything. She missed the confines of her room where she didn't have to worry about how she ate.

She looked away and swallowed. She took another bite and tried to get carried away by the taste. She finished the food in no time and drank some water.

"Would you like some more?" He asked, Mauve found how he was staring at her, a little unnerving. It made her self-conscious.

She was hesitant to answer, what she had just eaten was a reasonable amount. Jael took her hesitancy for confirmation and signaled for the servant to put some more on her plate. She tried to protest but gave up easily, she did want to eat more after all.

He finished eating and relaxed in his seat, studying her. Mauve squirmed in her seat. She looked up but he didn't look away. She tried to continue eating but she couldn't.

She dropped the cutlery a little too loudly against her plate. "Is there something on my face?" She asked. She was getting frustrated at this point and it didn't help that she was already in a bad mood.

He arched his head to the side. "Why?"

Mauve blinked at his response, "What do you mean why? Is there something on my face? Crumbs perhaps?"

"Oh that. No."

Mauve glared at him, annoyed at the fact that he wasn't giving further details. She couldn't ask him why he was staring at her like that and it wasn't like she could stop him either.

She returned to eating but gave up soon enough. "Don't you have somewhere you have to be?" She asked impulsively then realizing what she had said she quickly added, "You don't have to wait for me."

She brought her head down and aggressively dug into her meal as she waited for his response. She couldn't comprehend while she was this on edge but he wasn't helping, he was just making her situation worse.

He shrugged, "Not really."

Mauve looked up at him, she wanted to finish eating and go to her room but there was no way she could speed up with him staring like that.

"Did something happen?" He asked.

"What do you mean?" Her hands on her plate froze.

"You have been fuming since you walked in."

Mauve faked a gasp and tried to act surprised. "Fuming, I wouldn't say that."

He leaned forward, "Then what would you say?"

She looked away a little too quickly, "Nothing." She returned her gaze to her food but instead of eating she began to play with it.

"If you are tired, you can stop. It was on my insistence that you got more food."

Mauve ground her teeth, she wasn't tired. She could finish another plate easily. She smiled faintly at him but didn't reply.

"Or is it that you would rather eat in your room?"

"No," she cried out. She didn't want him to misunderstand this situation.

"Hmm," he said and leaned back against the chair. "If you say so."

Mauve felt her forehead grow hot. Jael was exceptionally chatty today considering that he rarely initiated their conversations.

She took the last bite, chewed gently, and swallowed, then she took a sip of water and leaned back into her chair, wiping her lips. She folded the napkin, placed it on the table, and did the same thing to the napkin spread on her lap.

She gave it some seconds, pushed back her seat, and stood up. "Thank you for the meal," she said and started walking away.

"Where are you going?" Jael suddenly asked.

She turned around, a little startled at the unexpected question.

"Uhh, my room."

"Wait," he said and slowly stood up. The servants immediately bowed their heads. He walked to where she stood and took her wrist. "Come with me."

The words were barely out of his mouth when he began to pull her towards the door. He made it sound like a request but Mauve knew she had no say in the matter.

Just before they got to the door, the guards threw it open and they walked out. The guards also kept their heads bent as Jael passed them.

"Where are we going?" She asked as they stepped out of the dining room.

"You'll see."

Mauve glared at his back but she kept mum and followed after him. He didn't release his hold on her. He pulled her up the stairs and she remembered the first time she had been in the castle but instead of leading her to the room, he led her further up.

"Where are we going?" She asked again as they walked up the stairs.

"I am sure you can take a guess."

He stopped in front of the library and let go of her hands. He pushed the door open and Mauve held in a gasp. The library was brightly lit. She had never seen it so bright before.

All the candles were lit, even the ones hanging from the ceiling. She walked in with her head raised very high as she tried to take in everything, she could see the corners.

"It is beautiful," she mumbled.

Jael didn't say anything, just took her wrist and tugged. She wanted to ask where he was pulling her to but she knew now that he wouldn't answer so she kept quiet and let her be pulled by him.

He stopped abruptly and she stopped in front of him, immediately looking around to see what she was supposed to see here.

"You had asked for a recommendation." He said and let go of her hand.

Mauve nodded and tucked her hair behind her ear and nodded.

He took a step forward and she took a step backward but he was aiming for her. He reached for the shelf above her head and then hesitated.

Mauve frowned wondering what was wrong but before she could guess, Jael bent and took her lips with his.
