Chapter 152: Trapped Sea Lord (2)

The two only stopped their attacks when the monster had shrunk significantly, its height only a head taller than them. The mouth at its chest had become a gruesome sight because its size did not shrink as the body did.

If the body shrank further, the mouth might be able to devour the monster. The two would not do something so foolish as to give a gift to an enemy.

It was a curse and already considered an enemy.

The monster grunted, its aura faint.

"You’re about to die," Devion spoke matter-of-factly, devoid of provocation. However, the monster still took it as such.

"You’re lucky... This lord isn’t at its peak." Its voice, while stable, sounded weaker than the imposing version earlier. Its effect was not as irritating.

Khal and Devion did not respond. Both knew that the monster was saying the truth. They were confident they could defeat it, but it would not be as easy; they would surely struggle.

"Ugh. Detestable humans... I can’t believe I’ll fall to your kind." The monster rambled for a long time, its breath slowing down. Until it finally fell silent.

It was not dead... yet. However, it would not be far off either. Based on their observation, the injuries they inflicted only hastened its demise, and sooner or later, it would still have perished without their intervention.

Just like... with Devion.

"Before you die, can you answer some of our questions?" It was truly a wonder if anyone would answer Devion’s question after such disrespect, much less a monster.

Sure enough, the monster remained silent. Khal shook his head, lips curled helplessly. He knew what Devion was about to ask and decided to intervene.

He would let Devion handle this.

Devion clicked his tongue. He did not want to be ignored. His question was serious, after all.

"That curse, how did you get it?" Again, there was silence. That was to be expected, and Devion was not discouraged. To begin with, attempting to communicate with a monster was definitely a first.

"Just like you, I’m afflicted with a curse. Can you at least answer me since we’re both curse victims?" Now that was bullshit.

Even for him.

Devion bit the inside of his cheek to stop himself from laughing. What in the world? Was he truly asking a monster to be considerate because they were both victims?

Khal bit his lips, rubbing his face. He almost burst out laughing. Trying a pity party with a monster, how ridiculous was that? Devion’s tone was not helping either.

Angel, can you stop being embarrassing?

Devion did not even stop, even after being ignored.

"Don’t you feel resentful? We have defeated you so easily because of that fucking curse. That curse is the one that will kill you, not us."

Another bullshit. Before that curse killed it, Devion and Khal would finish it off first. The moment it intended to devour Ayen, it already earned its death sentence.

The monster remained silent. Devion frowned. Was it impossible, after all? He was just curious, as this was his first time seeing that even a monster could also be afflicted with a curse.

Or maybe, because it was also intelligent?

Khal sighed and was about to tell Devion to wrap it up when the monster opened its eyes. Only a quarter of them were open and functional.

Devion’s mood lit up. He watched the monster as it did the same. It was observing him, as though trying to figure out if he was telling the truth.

There was a chuckle; the monster was laughing. It sounded breathless and weak, but there was amusement in it.

Devion’s eye twitched. He almost jumped and punched it. He had not laughed at its predicament, but the monster laughed at him.

There was one more upset than him; Khal’s eyes coldly glared at the monster. If Devion was not fishing for information, the monster was already a cold corpse by now.

The monster paused. It felt the chill, more intense than before; its eyes met Khal’s, and its breathing became heavier.

It could not help but grunt in pain when the curse tried to eat away at its physical body again. The monster was being eaten alive.

"This malevolent being has latched on to you indeed." The monster gasped and spoke. "And yet you’re still alive. Are you really human?"

"Malevolent being?"

"The one you’re calling a curse." It paused, only to take a deep breath. "This lord has never seen any human who survived a malevolent being’s possession. You are not an excep—" Before he managed to continue, a sharp sword was now pointing at him.

A pair of dangerous blue eyes looked down at him. The monster had no doubt; just a swing of that sword and its life would end. Khal had not said a word; his gaze alone was enough to intimidate the monster who had always disdained them just a moment ago.

Devion was not surprised by his reaction. Khal was too sensitive to curse talks. They were very aware that surviving this long... might already be a limit. They were already preventing it and had never found a cure.

The monster was not wrong. But maybe it was not right either. Ayen’s image flashed in his mind, both of them actually, and their expression softened slightly.

The mouth felt another presence, and its mouth opened only for it to be blocked. Khal did not even bother glancing at it.

"Tell us, what do you know about malevolent beings?" Devion continued to ask. Khal’s patience was wearing thin, and he had to speed things up.

This monster truly provoked Khal this time.

The monster seemed to sigh. "This Lord... really... fell this time." It finally submitted to fate.

Its body shrank, and the mouth moved, yet huge ice was lodged inside it and could not do anything. "Malevolent beings are mysterious beings in our realm. They possessed anyone and anything. No one knew where they came from."

The monster took a deep breath, the aura getting weaker.

"You don’t know anything? Devion was not satisfied with its answer. Its answer was empty; aside from knowing that it was called a malevolent being, nothing was particularly answered.

The curse was not truly simple.

Somehow, the two found themselves in the same position as before.

Uncertain and hopeless.
