This Young Master is not Cannon Fodder-Chapter 698: Overcoming Death
Gu Longyu appeared on the second planet of the Death Goddess Planetary Alliance. As the second planet to join the planetary alliance, the Temple of Death’s influence had deeply entrenched itself among the inhabitants. The third-ranked planet was much the same. Theoretically, they could stimulate a rebellion, but that would only be for the weaker forces—fools who did not know the height of heaven.
Not only would they not go against the Temple of Death, but they would be the Temple of Death’s staunchest supporters. It was for this reason that the Death Defier Alliance showed no intent of recruiting them or asking them to sit on the sidelines. If anything, they treated the top forces on the second and third planets the same as the Temple of Death—kill on sight.
The Death Defier Alliance could not pinpoint Xi Yinian’s location twenty-four seven, but they had a gist of his general area. Gu Longyu would only need to make some ruckus to attract his attention.
So, Gu Longyu attacked. It was a force on the second planet. Through one of the Death Defier Alliance’s spies, they learned that this seemingly second-rate force had an immortal emperor, making it qualified to be a first-rate force. The Death Defier Alliance had attempted to woo the second-rate force but was rejected.
Instead of allowing the second-rate force to reap the benefits and join the Temple of Death’s side at the optimal time, Gu Longyu and the Death Defier Alliance chose to wipe it out. Although the second-rate force had an immortal emperor, its foundation had not caught up, so Gu Longyu easily destroyed its guardian formation.
The immortal emperor died in less than five minutes.
Gu Longyu also took care of the immortal monarchs. He might not have gotten all of them, but he definitely crippled the second-rate force. Now, it could no longer be considered a second-rate force. It might even fall below a third-rate force once covetous organizations set their sights on the fertile territory, but that was a matter for the future.
The time it took for Gu Longyu to do all this upon arrival was ten minutes, including the time it took to kill the immortal emperor. He didn’t stay to marvel at the destruction he wrought or continue to destroy the force, but sped toward another location.
Since he had arrived, he had to kill as many enemies as possible and let his Dragonbone Saber drink its fill.
Gu Longyu had only wrought havoc on the second force he had set his eyes on when the reinforcements from the Temple of Death arrived. They might stall for the lower-ranking planets, but they could not abandon their staunch allies on the second planet.
The reinforcements did not include Yinian, disappointing Gu Longyu. Although there were two immortal emperors, he didn’t take them seriously. Still, he stopped his attack and focused on killing the new arrivals. Compared to an allied force, he preferred to kill members of the Temple of Death.
The two emperors identified Gu Longyu, and their expressions darkened. The report of his combat prowess had already reached the Temple of Death. Rather than an immortal emperor, the Temple of Death classified him as an immortal sovereign.
Knowing that battling him was suicide, the two turned around to flee, but how could Gu Longyu let them do as they wished?
Unlike his previous encounter with the immortal emperors of the Temple of Death, he honed in on the soul emperor. He recognized his status because the soul emperor was not some unknown figure. The other immortal emperor emitted an oppressive aura containing blood. Gu Longyu guessed he was a martial emperor.
Gu Longyu was upon the soul emperor, his speed far superior. The martial emperor attempted to distract him, but Gu Longyu deflected his actions and honed in on the soul emperor. At least if another situation similar to Planet Madarchy happened, his allies would be far more helpful.
The soul emperor did not sit and wait to die; he counterattacked. But his usual proud methods became useless against Gu Longyu. Perhaps if Gu Longyu just stood there and allowed him to attack for an hour without doing anything, he could kill him—but how could Gu Longyu willingly be a sitting duck?
The martial emperor cried out in sadness and despair as his compatriot’s corpse fell to the ground.
Despite his anger, the martial emperor did not spout words of revenge. He knew it was impossible for him to kill Gu Longyu. Not to mention, this wasn’t the first comrade he lost because of the Death Defier Alliance’s rebellion.
“Is running all you can do?” Gu Longyu mocked. “If that’s the case, just wait back at your temple and wash your neck for my blade!”
The martial emperor gritted his teeth. Even though he was not among the top ten cultivators of the Temple of Death, he was still a mighty immortal emperor. Everywhere he went, people would grovel at his feet and stare at him with eyes of admiration. When had he ever been scolded like this?
Just as Gu Longyu prepared to unleash a powerful blow to severely injure the martial emperor, he paused for a split second. He couldn’t sense anything wrong, but his internal radar was blaring at max volume. Still, his actions stopped only for a single moment, and he continued them.
The moment Gu Longyu attacked, a silver-white sword tip pierced through his head.
However, Gu Longyu was prepared. He tilted his head out of the way and instantly unleashed a powerful slash toward the wielder of the sword. His saber phased through his attacker’s skin harmlessly.
Gu Longyu and his attacker both frowned and retreated into the distance. Gu Longyu frowned not because of Yinian’s sneak attack, but because he had not completely dodged the latter’s sneak attack. A thin cut marred his handsome visage.
Although the time between Gu Longyu’s and Xi Yinian’s fifth encounter was shorter than the time before their fourth encounter, it felt even longer for Gu Longyu. It was much the same for Yinian.
Neither of them said anything. They ignored the world around them, as if only the other existed.
Slowly, both of them floated upward. They didn’t stop until they escaped the planet’s atmosphere and passed beyond the three moons. Once there, silence became their only companion.
Finally, Gu Longyu spoke. “You haven’t changed at all, still liking to use sneak attacks. You don’t have the demeanor of an emperor at all.”
“Demeanor? Nothing is too low to use against a hypocrite like you,” Yinian said, brandishing his sword at Gu Longyu.
Gu Longyu smiled. There really was nothing to say. Their relationship had long reached the point where only one of them could survive in the end. Even if one of them surrendered, hoping to live, the other would never give them the chance.
Yinian struck first. His body blurred, accelerating beyond mere speed. When his sword arrived, Gu Longyu had undergone dragon transformation. Not only that, he gained three heads and six arms. The two extra pairs of arms and sabers allowed him to battle Yinian on even ground.
Compared to their previous encounter, it was a much more equal battle, despite Yinian entering the Intermediate Extremity Immortal Realm. The cause of this was naturally the fusion of five elemental laws into the Law of Destruction by Gu Longyu. Although they had not fused into the Law of Five Phases, the circulation of the five elements brought him significant improvements beyond the other two laws already merged with the Law of Destruction.
Their clash sent ripples across the starry sky. Most of the time, their attacks struck each other’s blades, only sending slight distortions. In rare cases where their attacks partially or fully missed, it changed the sky—a dazzling streak like a meteor, or perhaps a dazzling explosion that resembled a supernova.
The battle was beyond the comprehension of those still within the second planet’s influence. Even the mortals could only stare at the sky, wondering if it had collapsed or if the world was ending. Many of them huddled in their houses, hugging their loved ones and praying to the Goddess of Death not to embrace them so soon.
The battle raged on, with Gu Longyu and Yinian seemingly on equal footing.
Keyword being seemingly.
Although Yinian’s improvement after reaching the Extremity Immortal Realm was not as great as Gu Longyu thought, it was still substantial. His offense was superb. While his defenses were not lacking, they were not at the same level as his attacks, a level or two behind. Finally, his movements were much like his defenses. Still, combining all three together, he was practically perfect.
Sword immortals had always been known for their offensive powers, but Yinian went beyond that standard. Gu Longyu would know. The reason sword immortals were so powerful was because of their Sword Intent. Anyone who possessed such an intent had the same power as a sword immortal, such as saber immortals, spear immortals, etc.
Gu Longyu possessed an even more perfect foundation. This perfection wasn’t just in battle, but outside of it. Compared to Yinian, who only shone in battle, he excelled in much more than combat. However, that didn’t matter at this point. Everything he knew could not compare to Yinian’s combat potential. Once he died, it wouldn’t matter at all.
He was ever so slightly weaker than Yinian. Although he was holding his own, it was only a matter of time before he fell into a greater disadvantage. Despite knowing this, Gu Longyu did not back down. Since he was weaker, he had to compensate with greater ferocity.
Through battle, he must evolve. Only then could he comprehend the initial fusion of the Law of Five Phases and step onto the Origin Immortal Realm, completely exceeding his fated nemesis.
More and more wounds appeared on Gu Longyu’s body as the battle continued. It was not that Yinian was unharmed; it was quite the opposite. Countless wounds revealing deep abysses filled with countless motes of light appeared all over his body, but he did not care.
With time, the wounds would close, revealing unblemished flesh. In fact, this had already occurred countless times. Many cuts and holes littered his robes, but the flesh peeking out was unharmed because it had already healed.
Gu Longyu even suspected Yinian carried a realm artifact with him. Otherwise, how else could he explain the seemingly inexhaustible qi?
Eventually, Gu Longyu reached the point where he couldn’t even maintain his dragon transformation. His Three Heads, Six Arms technique had long been deactivated. Even his Dragonbone Saber suffered a crack, forcing him to discard it.
His arms no longer felt like flesh, but lead. He struggled to raise them, but his fingers clenched the hilt, unwilling to let go.
Gu Longyu stared unwaveringly at Yinian as he reared his hand back and thrust the sword tip toward his head. Blood leaked from every orifice, and he could barely move, but he stared death in the eye.
Is this it? Is this my end? I’ve killed countless enemies from my humble beginning, killed the bastard who stole my woman. When I thought I was at the top of the world, I was betrayed and killed—but I had a backup plan. Still, I never expected to revive.
Gu Longyu’s eyes grew blurry as he sank deeper into his memories. Time seemed to slow as he reflected on his life.
I should have risen to the top, toppled the Temple of Death. What a joke. Because of that decision I made back then, I gained such an enemy. Is this the feeling all those bastards I killed felt? Really, it’s such a joke. I didn’t even learn whether or not the Temple of Death has a true divinity.
After reflecting on himself, Gu Longyu thought about his close ones.
What a pity. I never got to return to Planet Dragonsleep. I couldn’t see Father again. Speaking of fathers… neither Wintersnow nor Springsnow bore a child for me. Perhaps it’s for the best. If they did, my child would have to live in suffering.
NO!!!!
Gu Longyu’s eyes regained their clarity.
So what if I had a child? I will protect the child and let him grow under my shade. I won’t die here!
It was as if the thing blocking his way had shattered into a million pieces. He finally gained an initial mastery of the Law of Five Phases. Even in outer space, the sparse spiritual qi gathered around him like a vortex, instantly restoring his qi reserves at an expedited pace. Not only that, but his immortal qi was in the process of transforming into essence qi.
Gu Longyu slashed his saber. It clashed against Yinian’s silver-white sword. Unlike the seemingly equal contest of strength, Yinian was blasted back, with a huge gash on his chest, leaking immortal qi of primordial chaos.
“Yinian, die!”
