Chapter 30: A New Quest? [II]

As a coin has two sides. The same way the moon bears both light and shadow. Fire gives warmth and destruction, and the darkness lives most under the radiant light.

The same could be said for the Varen barony, too, which was known as the city of Wagers.

People, at first glance at the city, thought the worst thing there was the regretful people, those who had destroyed their lives with gambling. However, they were wrong, laughably so, because the richest barony also had something worse to its name.

Slum.

However, instead of slums being outside the city walls. It was situated inside.

Velkyn Cross was one of those people, like Elias’s father, Adrian Varen, who let the people who were treated like filth by both commoners and nobles live inside their territories.

’It’s much worse than I thought it would be.’

Elias’s eyes roamed over the lower city, the slums, and all he saw were depleted houses, if you could even call them that.

Stench filled his nose as he continued to look at the place with furrowed brows.

’Let’s go, I guess.’

Blink

Evelyn rubbed her eyes.

Blink

She rubbed them once more.

"Ok, I think I am hallucinating."

"What?"

"What, what? How the fuck are you going to find something here? Money? That’s too far-fetched. You should first try to find something eatable, wearable, or any anyable. Because you are not finding shit here."

Elias shook his head.

"Would you stop being so pessimistic? Be optimistic."

’I can’t believe I am giving someone a lesson on being optimistic.’

"Optimistic, my ass," Evelyn groaned.

"Let’s go," Elias said, done with her tantrum. "I will show you something unbelievable."

Yet the woman didn’t stop screaming.

"Unbelievable. Is this what you called a surprise? Yeah, if I am being real, it is a surprise that I am still fucking believing in you."

She continued for a while before finally tagging along.

’How is she even 31 years old? Isn’t she too childish? Or maybe I am too mature, heh.’

Elias was in good spirits. He had finally allied with Evelyn, and everything was going well. Not that they had done a single thing.

But as he said, be optimistic!

Anyway, Evelyn was pretty chill. As the conversation in the alleyway had ended, she reverted to her annoying behavior.

Swearing here and there and talking as if she hadn’t been just a few steps away from slicing someone’s neck.

Not that Elias cared how she acted. He just wanted her to do everything he said. If she did it, she can do whatever the fuck she wants.

Except for the things he didn’t want, obviously!

Nonetheless, there was no need for him to act all emo. So he also started to cool down.

There was no harm in it. For if everything went well, Evelyn was going to be a huge help, much bigger and more than what she was now!

So strengthening their relationship was not going to be in vain.

However—

"Where are we going?"

Evelyn asked for the nth time, and Elias replied for the nth time.

"Just follow me," he said, exhausted from the number of questions she was asking.

They hadn’t even entered the slums!

"Stop fucking sighing. If you are exhausted by my questions," Evelyn muttered, glancing at him. "Just fucking answer."

"We are going to a gambling place, ok. Now stop asking."

"Gambling! Here?"

"You said you would stop asking."

Elias said with annoyance as they finally started to walk and entered through the huge ass hole in the palisades, which were erected to separate the area. They were not entering from the main gate, as there were guards stationed.

"Of course I would have. But you are just fu—"

Evelyn stopped suddenly. Her red eyes turned towards the house—if she could even call the structure made from rotten wood and dirty cloths a house.

The sound of crying filled her ears as she continued to glance at the entrance.

After a few moments, without saying anything, she entered.

Elias had some speculation about what was going to happen. And he didn’t want to see it.

’But how much am I going to let myself like this? At some point, I would have to see things much worse than these.’

He gritted his teeth and shook his head before following Evelyn.

As they entered, Elias saw what was going on.

The said house was small, just a few feet square. In that small area, all things were stuffed. Dirty clothes and things to eat that didn’t look consumable. And even a makeshift bathroom was there in the same small place!

It was dirty, and the smell that the place reeked of was stomach-churning.

’Ugh!’

But this stuffy, dirty, and smelly space did not become the focus of their attention.

Something else did.

A group of men, most of them looking emaciated, with only one being the exception, were trying to force themselves on a woman who was pleading.

But the cries were not from her; they were from the kids crying in the corner. Just present on the woman’s side.

One of the kids, who looked to be around 5 or 6 years old, was trying to hold the rest of the kids together with her back towards her mother.

"P-please... don’t do this... please..."

The woman continued to beg as the men, disregarding her pleas, started to tear her clothes.

"At least let’s do it somewhere else... my children are here... please."

She at last conceded. But one of the men, who has visible muscles, if compared to every other occupant in the house, sneered.

"Heh, let them watch." He licked his lips. "Because they would be the ne—"

Before he could complete his words, his head slid off, falling on the ground.

Thud

The red color sprayed dyeing the rest of them in the viscous fluid.

"Huh?!"

The woman, surprised, looked at the body that suddenly fell on her. Her mind blanked as she couldn’t even react.

However, the men who were trying to force themselves on her after a moment came out of their stupor and turned towards the redhead standing in front of them.

One of them bravely took out the knife from his waist, pointing towards the woman.

"W-what the fuck—"

However, even he couldn’t complete his words.

Slice

The katana danced in the air in a blur, and in a few seconds, the group of 4 men fell to the ground. Their head rolling on the ground and their blood turning the woman and the ground red.

The metallic smell bloomed in the filthy place as Evelyn stood there with the blood dripping from her katana. Her body was also drenched in red as she emotionlessly stared at the dead bodies.

Seeing the scene, Elias felt his stomach churn. He bit the inside of his mouth, tasting iron, as he tried not to empty his stomach.

Even the kids had stopped crying. The girl who was shielding them didn’t even glance backward while she pressed the other 2 kids’ heads against her chest, not letting them even release a squeak.

But Evelyn—she didn’t care. Not waiting for a second more, she lifted the bodies from upon the woman, freeing her from the weight.

"T-thank you," the emaciated woman muttered as she pressed her hands against her mouth. There was genuine relief in her dead eyes.

However, Evelyn didn’t answer. She stood there looking down at her.

The woman, not knowing what to do before the blood-drenched redhead, once more opened her mouth.

"Thank—"

However—

The next moment.

Evelyn square-kicked the woman.
