Chapter 37: End [I]

The door opened with a creaking sound that echoed all over the place, bouncing against the wall.

Creaakkk

Kade entered the room, feeling his heart beat thudding with nervousness.

Ba-dump!

His eyes settled over to the sofa perched before the see-through glass. The bloody game ongoing in the Colosseum blurred as Kade’s eyes focused on the man sitting on the sofa.

His legs were crossed as wine swirled in the glass he held.

The man wasn’t even looking at Kade. From the view Kade could see, he could only glimpse the bored face of the man, who was looking at the chaos in front of him with eyes laden with languor.

’Should I say something?’

Kade thought.

Should he start the conversation?

However, before Kade could do so, out of habit and affected by nervousness, he probed the man.

Kade didn’t feel anything from Elias, almost nothing. The person, the young man sitting there, looked and seemed ordinary.

He felt nothing out of the ordinary; instead, he seemed weak. Not only that, but he seemed unawakened.

There was no trace of mana in his body!

But not for a second did Kade think that all of this was true. The doubt didn’t even last in his head; no, it didn’t even come to his head.

There was no way he was as weak as it was said about him.

Good-for-nothing son?

That was the rumor Victor had started. Kade knew if the man before him was who he thought him to be, all of the things that happened in the Varen barony happened only due to his wish. Not because of a mere Cestallen.

But all of it didn’t matter, as the nervousness was still eating Kade from the inside.

Gulp

Suddenly, feeling a deep stare from someone, Kade turned his head and glanced at the woman next to the man.

Dark red hair and fiery red eyes like a pit of blazing fire stared back at him.

’[C-]?! She is hiding her rank for sure. But... I am more worried about him.’

Kade turned his eyes back towards Elias.

What should he do?

He started to brood. Should he just call him or go there? How the hell should he start the conversation?

It was his first time being this nervous, and all of it was due to the fact that he didn’t want to make any mistakes, so his nervousness was justifiable.

However, Kade didn’t have to worry any longer, as, taking a sip of the wine, Elias kept the glass on the side and stood up.

Turning, he glanced at Kade and started to walk towards him.

Kade, seeing the young man walking towards him, started to feel more nervous.

There was no pressure, no intent, nor a speck of power radiating from the young man before him.

The man looked like a speck of dust when compared to the people present in the room. But yet, Kade felt pressure.

It was not a physical one, but a mental one. It felt to Kade as if he were nothing more than a meaningless creature before the man.

The way man looked at him, the way he walked towards him, all of it said as if nothing could do anything to him. As if everything present here were nothing more than a playing object, an object that he knew he already had under control.

It all became more evident, and the pressure reached a crescendo, when the young man came to a stop before Kade, towering over him.

"Hm."

He hummed. The man hummed and tilted his head sideways, his dark auburn hair swaying with his head momentarily as his hazel eyes glowed like all-seeing orbs, as if expecting something.

And that sealed the presence of the man before Kade. Kade, without even knowing, fell to his knees and bowed, lowering his head like an obedient dog before his master.

"I, Kade, greet you, my lord."

"Hm."

Elias hummed once more.

’He really believes that I am from the organization, doesn’t he!’

Elias mused on the thought as he continued to stare at the two men kneeling before him.

’Is this what it means to be powerful?’

Elias knew that what he was experiencing was nothing but a fabricated thrill of power. He knew that all of this was just due to an act, nothing more. But even then, the feeling of standing over someone, someone powerful enough to kill him in a breath, was satisfying.

’Well, I shouldn’t waste time. I have to go to the hotel too, before someone gets to know that I have sneaked out.’

"There’s been a change of plan," Elias muttered, rubbing his chin.

’So, it is true!’

Kade felt the excitement. If the change of plan considered him, was he going to be given a higher position, a new place to command, or maybe given more power?

’I am. There is no way I am not getting something when a low-wing member himself has come.’

Kade was completely disillusioned by power now. He even started to believe firmly that Elias was a low-wing member of the organization.

And to his justification, who didn’t like power? Everyone did, and Kade was the same. He also liked power. Hell, he loved it.

Perking his ears, he listened, waiting for the next words that would soothe his curiosity and give him more power.

And the words came. But to his disappointment, the words didn’t match what he wanted to hear!

"The organization wants nothing to do with you."

’Huh?!’

Before Kade could even register the surprise completely, someone reached near him in a flash.

SWOOSH!

A katana swung, its edges crashing against the magic shield that Julius prepared in a second.

CLANGGG!

Kade’s eyes widened.

"W- whaa... ?’

He stuttered as he lifted his head upwards in a jerk and glanced before him.

A blade was clashing against the transparent shield before him, its surface rippling with green hexagonal patterns.

The redhead was now in front of the man, her fingers tightened around the katana whose steel clashed against the shield.

But all of it didn’t matter to Kade.

It fucking didn’t.

What mattered was—

"What do you mean?"

Kade asked the man. No, he begged.

His face bleached as he desperately looked at the man in the back of the redhead.

"I—... ha... is the organization abandoning me?"

Kade asked, his breath growing haggard. His body was shaking as he looked at the man.

But the man. The young man didn’t answer; he simply continued to stare at him, his face blank, devoid of emotion, as his eyes, oh, those eyes, glowed.

"I didn’t hear it correctly, right?"

He asked before laughing hysterically.

"Yes, you must be joking. Haha... good joke, good joke, my lord." He shook his head. "No, no, no. Maybe, yeah, maybe you are testing me. Yeah, that could be it. Yeah." He once more glanced at Elias.

Kade’s blonde hair, which was styled perfectly, was disheveled now, covering his face as sweat poured from his body.

Drip

His fingers fidgeted with his cloth as he asked once more.

"You are joking, no?"

But no answer came.

Only the sound of the steel clashing against the magical shield echoed.

CLANGGG!

"My lord," Julius muttered with gritted teeth. "Please get a hold of yourself."

The woman was getting overwhelming for Julius. Her strength was getting stronger as she continued to press her katana against the shield.

And—

Julius couldn’t cast other spells, as his whole attention was on strengthening the shield. He knew the second his attention went haywire, the woman would break the shield.

The worst case would happen! That’s why he needed his lord to get hold of himself and start to help.

But the way Kade’s condition was worsening, it didn’t look like Julius was going to get help anytime soon.

"My lord!"

Kade didn’t respond. No, he couldn’t respond.

His sole focus was on the young man before him. He wanted answers!

He wanted to know that the man was merely joking. Or maybe testing him.

But the man didn’t answer. He simply stood there like a statue, looking at him.

Throb!

Kade felt a throb in his heart. Veins started to pop on his face as his blue eyes started to turn red.

"You are joking, no?"

He asked again.

No answers, once more.

His teeth gritted, the sound of the grinding echoing in the room.

GRIT... GRIT...

"YOU ARE JOKING, AREN’T YOU?"

Kade screamed, losing his control. His eyes turned completely red, veins popping all over his body. His blonde hair was disheveled and sticking to his face as sweat glistened on his skin, and he glared at the man before him.

"YOU MUST BE JOKING. THERE’S NO WAY, THERE’S NO FUCKING WAY THE ORGANIZATION IS ABANDONING ME!"

Kade couldn’t control himself.

He scratched his face, tearing skin, as blood came out.

"THERE IS NO WAY YOU ALL CAN DO IT. I GAVE YOU ALL EVERYTHING. I GAVE YOU ALL MY LIFE AND MY BODY. I WORKED LIKE A FUCKING DOG. AND NOW..."

He inhaled, taking in the air, dragging it like a lifeline as if it were the only thing real.

"HA..."

His voice changed as his finger dove into his cheeks, his nail digging, and he clawed out his own flesh and blood.

"You all can’t do it. No, you shouldn’t do it," he begged. His screams died down as he looked at the man before him. "I am still needed, no?"

The man didn’t answer.

And—

CRACK—

Spiderwebs like cracks filled the shield before him, before it broke down the next second.

SHATTER!
