Chapter 683: The old deity’s advise to Esong.

Esong wasn’t trying to escape Scarlet and her need to talk, not completely; he had truly been summoned by the gods, the god of death in particular to his palace.

He was feeding his crows, with bits of fresh bloody meat.

"You are here, great. You need to go hunting again, it’s urgent. Apparently something escaped the demon bone mountain while your wife was giving birth. I would send one of the gatekeepers but you will get the job done much sooner now that you have managed to avoid punishment for your crime."

"I did not commit a crime. Also, now is not the best time for me to go demon hunting, my wife just had the babies."

The old deity turned his head to Esong and he frowned. "You are not Nyx I take it, so I must be talking to the human."

"I am also not human anymore." Esong responded.

"You are only here thanks to my son’s foolish decision not to subdue and erase your consciousness. If he had done as he was supposed to, you would be non-existent anymore." The old deity turned back to his crows and said dismissively, "Now that you are here, do your job as expected. You will have an eternity to sort things out with your wife but the demon which was released is a baby eater. As a new father yourself, I believe that you should be able to understand the urgency of the situation."

Esong chuckled, "A baby eater, really!"

"I know, right? I don’t know if it’s a coincidence that the demon which escaped just happened to be a baby eater. Whatever the case is, it needs to be captured and returned to the prison as soon as possible. There are some things that are too dangerous to be allowed to walk among the humans even for a day. If you cannot take on the job, maybe your wife could do it."

"Don’t even dare to suggest that." Esong growled out.

The old deity turned his head to Esong, this time he looked at him curiously. A grim reaper that actually dared to growl at him was he foolish or simply arrogant because he was merged with Nyx?

Esong suddenly smiled slyly and he said, "Or maybe you can dare. I would like to see you try."

The old deity was not amused. Whether it was a joke or a threat, it didn’t impress him. Mostly, he was irritated because he would much rather deal with Nyx than Esong. Nyx understood duty and he went to work once instructions were gone. Esong was more of a talker, an annoying one that liked to push buttons and make a point.

"Just go." The old deity waved his hand, dismissing Esong. "And by the way, your wife has left the realm with her hounds. I guess she cannot stand living down here with a husband that is undecided on his new life."

"I am not undecided." Esong replied, a little too strongly.

"Are you trying to convince me or yourself? You are angry with her because she didn’t tell you she was a grim reaper and someday you would die but she would go on to live and possibly move on with her life. You are coming to terms with the fact that she is not actually Scarlet, spirit wise but someone else, a stranger.

I can also see another struggle in your eyes which I recognize. Many humans turned reaper go through the same emotions you are experiencing. You come to the realization that someday all your loved ones will be dead and you will watch and reap their souls. The scary truth that someday you will be left all alone in the world to remember them. But do you know what makes you luckier than most?"

Esong shook his head.

The old deity looked over his body, his eyes moving slowly from head to toe and then to Esong’s eyes.

"You are luckier than most since you are in your original body and life. Most don’t get that chance because they have to live in new bodies. They must accept the lives of those they have become and embrace their loved ones while forgetting their own. On top of that, they must let go of their own identities and leave behind who they were.

They can’t return to their home worlds to check on those they left behind lest they be tempted to save their loved ones who might be at deaths door.

They must also pay for the mistakes of their host bodies if any. Like your wife..." he released the crows and teleported down, standing in front of Esong and he said softly, "She paid for the mistakes of the original owner of the body. She apologized and redeemed a woman that was not worthy of redemption, a woman that left emotional scars on the heart of a little child.

She gave you warmth and love, accepting you despite your own mistakes along the way. And don’t even deny it because it’s true, you made a lot of mistakes. Nyx helped you because the hatred you had for your original wife was too strong to simply vanish because she cooked a few good meals and let you mate with her.

Imagine how she felt, being on the receiving end of all your anger and disdain? And yet, despite this, she fell in love with you so much that even now, she is still willing to fight any deity that lays a hand on you.

I am telling you this so that you make your mind up about whether you can accept your new self and her fully.

Eternity is too long to keep her waiting. If you do not want her, there are many male reapers that are quite eager to take your place." He smiled mysteriously and said, "Ah, now that she is kopuko, it’s not just male reapers but other creatures too, male and female, including but not surprising, deities. Our kind likes to play with fire."

"I will not give up my wife to any deity, human or non-human." Esong bellowed angrily. His black eyes were partially red.

The old deity slapped him on the back and said with an amused smile, "Great to know that you can still show up when needed son. Now, go find that baby eating demon and bring it back before it does too much damage. We don’t need the underworld to be caught up in the middle of more drama. And don’t forget what I have said, you are luckier than most men, Esong Wu, in more ways than you even realize."

The old deity had said all that he desired so he teleported back to his big intimidating throne and gave his attention to the crows once again.

Esong turned around and walked out of the palace on foot, even though he could easily teleport. There was a lot on his mind that he had to consider and he wanted it sorted out quickly. The one thing he and Nyx agreed on was that he was not losing his wife. What they needed to do was start from scratch and begin again.
