Chapter 65: A Hypocrisy

"I’m here at His Majesty’s request. He wants you to come to his study."

At those words, Arthur was stunned. His eyes widened as he stared at Rucos in disbelief.

"What are you saying, Prime Minister? His Majesty summoned me?" he asked, surprised.

"Yes, His Majesty did summon you. He asked me to personally deliver the message," Rucos confirmed.

Arthur fell silent, his brows slightly furrowed. He had anticipated that Nathan might reach out to him, but he hadn’t expected the man to send Rucos.

Was there an ulterior motive behind this?

His expression grew tense—confused and cautious. Nathan was known for his cunning and ruthlessness; he would do anything to achieve his goals.

This was evident when he agreed to Victoria’s request to ignore Sharon, as if she didn’t exist. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

He did it to appease Victoria’s dissatisfaction, which, if left unchecked, could have caused a rift within the royal family.

However, everything changed the moment Sharon awakened the golden light attribute in the throne room. Nathan’s attitude shifted instantly. He began to draw closer to her.

Arthur couldn’t deny that Nathan’s actions were typical in the world of politics, but they still revealed his selfishness.

That was why a sense of unease naturally stirred within him.

The killer instinct embedded in Aron’s body warned him—something felt off.

Of course, if Nathan made a move against him, he wouldn’t flinch.

After all, he now inhabited Aron’s body—the former number one assassin of the One Eye Organization.

Even if his opponent was Nathan, a level-four mage, he remained confident.

Taking a deep breath, Arthur gave a small nod and forced a smile.

"Well, thank you for the notice, Prime Minister Rucos," Leon said respectfully, bowing his head slightly.

Rucos responded with a faint smile and a subtle nod.

After offering a polite farewell, Arthur walked past him and made his way to Nathan’s study.

As he watched Arthur’s back disappear down the corridor, Rucos chuckled softly and folded his arms across his chest.

"Aron, huh? What an interesting young man..."

Arthur walked down the hallway, lost in thought, trying to figure out what Nathan was really up to.

Before he realized it, he had arrived at the door to the king’s study. Taking a deep breath, he knocked softly.

"Your Majesty, it’s me, Aron. Prime Minister Rucos said you summoned me. May I come in?"

After a brief pause, a cold voice called from inside the room.

"Come in. The door is unlocked."

Arthur slowly turned the doorknob and carefully pushed the door open.

As it creaked, he saw Nathan seated at his desk, signing a pile of documents that filled the surface.

Arthur stepped inside, closed the door behind him, and approached, stopping about a meter away from the desk.

"Greetings, Your Majesty," he said respectfully, offering a slight bow.

Nathan stopped his work and leaned back in his chair, his eyes scanning Arthur from head to toe.

"Aron..." Nathan took a deep breath. "How long have you been Princess Sharon’s personal attendant?"

The question was so direct and blunt that Arthur was momentarily taken aback.

However, he had already suspected that the purpose of this summoning had something to do with that very question.

He raised his head slowly and replied, "I’ve been Princess Sharon’s personal servant for a year now, Your Majesty."

From the memories he had gathered, both from the book’s plot and Aron’s own recollections, it had indeed only been a year since their first meeting.

At that time, their relationship had been distant—awkward, even.

But over the course of the year, they had both grown accustomed to each other, and the bond between them had deepened.

Of course, it was Sharon who had taken the first step, while Aron had remained passive.

This was the primary reason Sharon’s affection for him had reached twenty-five points when he first arrived in this world.

It wasn’t a particularly high number, but it was enough to show that Sharon trusted him.

Nathan paused for a moment before asking again, "Then, can you tell me about Sharon over the past year? And why has her behavior changed so drastically?"

His tone was calm, but anyone paying close attention could detect the suspicion and resentment lurking beneath it.

He deliberately refrained from directly accusing Aron of being the cause of Sharon’s shift in attitude.

Without evidence, such an accusation could make Aron defensive and force him to lie.

After all, Nathan had never shown any particular interest in Sharon. If Aron denied it, Nathan had no way to prove the lie.

This is why Nathan chose a gradual, measured approach, step by step, intending to corner him.

Arthur remained silent, not immediately responding to the question, which only served to irritate Nathan.

"Why the silence, Aron? Don’t you intend to answer my question? You do realize, don’t you, that my question is essentially a king’s command?" Nathan said, narrowing his eyes, his tone laced with subtle pressure.

Still, Arthur remained composed, offering a faint smile in return.

"Apologies, Your Majesty. It wasn’t my intention to withhold an answer. I’m just surprised that you would ask such a question. After all, it didn’t seem like you cared much for Princess Sharon before."

The words seemed like a subtle allusion to his failure as a father, but Nathan had no reason or evidence to respond.

After all, Aron’s tone remained calm and polite—devoid of any sarcasm or mockery.

He took a deep breath, trying to suppress his anger, then said coldly, "Just answer my question—how has Sharon been over the past year?"

Arthur smiled faintly before replying, "Princess Sharon is a good girl. She’s always been sensible and has never caused trouble for anyone, including me."

"However..." he added, pausing briefly before continuing, "Princess Sharon is often mistreated by the other princesses, princes, and concubines. Every day, she wore a gloomy expression, sadness always lingering on her face. She often confided in me, most of which were complaints about her pain and frustration with how her own family treated her."

In truth, he was reluctant to explain all of this to Nathan. After all, the man hadn’t played a significant role in Sharon’s development.

On the contrary, Nathan was one of the primary causes of the girl’s suffering.

Had he used his power to suppress the queen, the concubines, and the princes and princesses who oppressed Sharon from the start, the girl wouldn’t have endured the misery she had faced for the past thirteen years.

Nevertheless, he couldn’t help but feel grateful that Nathan was indifferent. In the end, his lack of attention worked to his advantage.

Now, the only person in Sharon’s mind was him. She trusted him completely and listened to only what he had to say—not anyone else.

Nathan fell silent again at his words. He knew Sharon had suffered a great deal, but he hadn’t realized the depth of her pain.

No wonder the girl had shown such a change in demeanor in the throne room. The awakening of her golden light attribute had clearly been the source of her newfound confidence.

’I truly failed as a father...’ he murmured softly, regret filling his voice.

It wasn’t the awakening of her light attribute that weighed on him, but the guilt and pity that slowly began to consume him.

Unfortunately, it was already too late. Rebuilding his relationship with Sharon would be an incredibly difficult task now.

Meanwhile, Aron, watching in silence, only offered a faint smile—a smile full of mockery.

’What a hypocrite...’
