Chapter 518: Holding hands.
Watching this entire exchange from a distance, Han Zhan’s disbelief deepened. He could see that Han Xin was distracted almost disoriented by Xiang Yu’s presence. freeωebnovēl.c૦m
Han Zhan had been observing his cousin’s reactions, growing increasingly concerned about Xiang Yu’s influence over him. He could see that Han Xin was slowly lowering his guard around Xiang Yu.
"We searched there thoroughly," Han Zhan spoke up, breaking the charged silence. "There was nothing."
Xiang Yu finally turned his attention to Han Zhan, surprised to see him standing there. "Oh, you’re here," he said casually. "Trust me, there is water there."
"Okay," Han Zhan replied sceptically, crossing his arms. "Are you willing to stake your life on it?"
Xiang Yu smiled with easy confidence in his demeanour. "Sure. If you don’t find anything, you can execute me." His lighthearted tone clashed with the weight of the words, an invitation to trust him.
Han Xin clenched his jaw, irritation simmering just beneath the surface. "Let’s head out," he said tersely, turning on his heel.
Han Zhan sensed his cousin’s anger but couldn’t pinpoint its cause. Han Xin had already moved ahead, leaving Xiang Yu to follow alongside Han Zhan.
"Which car should I go in?" Xiang Yu asked, glancing toward Han Zhan.
"You are with Su Jing," Han Zhan replied, his voice steady despite his concern.
Xiang Yu felt a flash of disappointment but kept it hidden behind a mask of composure. He turned and walked toward the car where Su Jing was preparing her gear.
Su Jing sneered as she saw Xiang Yu approach, her posture rigid with authority. "This is my little friend," she declared, her voice dripping with condescension.
In a swift motion, she pressed a button on the device she held, and a jolt of high voltage surged forth. Electric sparks shot out, intense and terrifying, making the air crackle. Calling it a taser would be an understatement.
But Xiang Yu stood firm, unyielding. The display of power didn’t seem to faze him in the slightest.
"Listen carefully," Su Jing warned, her voice low and menacing. "If you breathe wrong, I will use it. If you are mouthy, I will use it. And if you look at me wrong..."
After a beat of silence, Xiang Yu interrupted, his tone flat. "You will use it."
With a glint in her eyes, Su Jing replied, "I will use it. Now that we have come to an understanding, get inside the car."
Xiang Yu sensed a sadistic pleasure lurking in Su Jing’s smile, a feeling that she would enjoy using that device just for the thrill of it. He took a breath, steadying himself, and climbed into the car, settling into the seat as she slid in next to him.
However, the car in front remained unmoving. Meanwhile, in that car, Han Xin had just asked Han Zhan where Xiang Yu was.
"He is in the other car," Han Zhan replied, glancing over his shoulder at his cousin.
A frown creased Han Xin’s brow as he opened the door, leaving behind a bewildered Han Zhan. Han Zhan’s mind raced with confusion. Wasn’t Han Xin upset with Xiang Yu? This was precisely why he had suggested that Xiang Yu ride in the other car.
Han Xin stepped over to Su Jing’s car and opened the door, catching her by surprise. "Go in the other car," he ordered his tone firm.
"But—" Su Jing began, clearly taken aback.
"Don’t waste time. Get out," Han Xin insisted, his impatience palpable.
With a reluctant huff, Su Jing climbed out, leaving the door open as Han Xin stepped inside and settled next to Xiang Yu, his expression unreadable.
The driver and the other passengers in the car froze as Han Xin slid in after kicking out Su Jing. His arrival was unexpected and disruptive, an electric tension filling the air.
Su Jing, her pride bruised, walked toward the front car, muttering under her breath as the scorn of rejection washed over her. She climbed inside, where Han Zhan, still in shock, turned to her, eyebrows raised in confusion.
"Where did he go?" he asked.
"He told me to get out," Su Jing replied, fraying at the edges of her composure.
Han Zhan sighed, the weight of the situation settling down on his shoulders. He pulled out a cigarette, lowering his head to light it. After taking a long drag, he blew a puff of smoke out the window, a gesture of defiance against the stress encircling them. "Let’s go."
Lu Lu, who had insisted on joining them on this trip, started the car. The three vehicles pulled away from the curb, driving out of the city. As the city gates opened and then closed behind them, Xiang Yu glanced out the window, stifling a smile.
He couldn’t shake the feeling that Han Xin wouldn’t be able to bear being apart from him. Perhaps it was because he was guarding against him or just an urge to keep him close. Whatever the reason, it was undeniably cute.
Seeing Han Xin kick Su Jing out had been the best part of his morning. It filled Xiang Yu with a warmth that made him giddy. The driver, although harbouring a deep-seated disdain for Xiang Yu like most in the city, couldn’t help but notice the slight quirk at the corner of his lips in the rearview mirror. That mesmerising smile caught in the morning light made him seem almost angelic.
But the moment was snuffed out when the driver’s eye met Han Xin’s stern glare. It was a hard look, as cold and sharp as a winter night. "Eyes on the road," Han Xin instructed, his tone leaving no room for argument.
The driver tensed, gripping the steering wheel tightly as apprehension crawled through him. He felt as if one wrong move could cause Han Xin to erase him from existence.
Meanwhile, Xiang Yu remained focused outside, watching the dry wasteland unfold beneath the horizon, the mirage shimmering in the distance. His hand rested casually on his thigh, and he tapped it lightly, rhythmically. A slight smirk danced across his lips, a playful plot bubbling in his mind.
With a sudden playful impulse, he moved his finger into the narrow gap between his seat and Han Xin’s. He hooked Han Xin’s finger with his own, a gentle yet bold connection that sent a thrill through him.
