Chapter 772: Want A Job?

Theresa went over to the back of the cockpit and started messaging and calling several people all at the same time.

I was wondering if I actually managed to somehow do something that I wasn’t supposed to and ruined the Exo-Knight I was piloting.

It can’t be that they were worried that I managed to hack into the Exo-Knight so quickly so they were thinking that their Exo-Knights must have flawed security systems, right?

If I was them... I would probably just do a recall of all the Exo-Knights to redo their security systems to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

Damn... Did I end up delaying the release of the tenth generation Exo-Knights after all?

I wanted to ask Ries about it but my catgirl lover had already fallen asleep on my lap and was purring cutely as I patted her head.

She looked so cute with how she was purring on my lap so there was no way I was waking her up.

Eventually, Theresa stowed her personal terminal away and came over to me.

I saw her smiling at me so I figured that I must not be in trouble... Unless she was a sadist.

She stopped in front of me, "Miss Tera! Could I ask if you are currently employed?"

I thought she might be asking if I was currently working a desk job or something so I went ahead to remind her of my actual profession.

"UImm... Theresa? I told you I’m a Mercenary, right?"

"Yes. I’m asking if you are currently involved in any guild quests, miss Tera. Or perhaps you have already been commissioned by someone else?"

"Ah... In that case, no, I am not. We are currently free at the moment."

She clapped her hands together, "That is perfect! In that case, we would like to hire you, Miss Tera! How would you like to become one of our test pilots?!"

I blinked at her in surprise.

I was honestly not expecting things to develop in this direction to say the least...

"Umm... Me? A test pilot? For your Exo-Knights?"

She nodded her head enthusiastically, "That’s right! We’ll pay you well too!!"

I immediately shook my head, "Sorry, but I don’t intend to let myself be tied down to one place. I have a personal mission to explore the galaxy, you see... Which is why I became a Merc in the first place. If I were to take some long term employment contract, I would be stuck in a single place instead, which is something I don’t want no matter how good the pay is."

She paused upon hearing my words before raising her finger again, "One moment, miss Tera..."

She went back to the corner and started using her personal terminal to call up her contacts again.

Ok... Getting a company representative to invite me to be their test pilot was certainly not something I expected to get today...

I looked down at Ries who was still purring in her sleep and as much as I wanted to just let her sleep, I think this was serious enough that I should make sure she was aware of what is happening right now.

I tucked my hair behind my ear and leaned down to give her a kiss.

She mumbled something in her sleep before she started reacting to my kiss and tried to kiss me back.

I pulled away from her and watched as she tried to follow me, only to find that she could no longer taste my lips.

That made her wake up as she blinked herself awake, my Maochatte lover taking a moment to remember where she was.

"Good morning Ries~" I greeted her.

"E... Eh? Good morning Boss... Where are we?"

"We’re still in the same place. You just took a nap, that’s all. As much as I hate to wake you up, I think we have a situation now..."

She stretched herself before curling back on my lap while looking up at me, "What could be the situation, Boss?"

"Well... It seems like Crusaders Inc. intends to invite me to go work for them or something..."

That seemed to wake up immediately as she leapt from my lap.

"What?!" She cried out, her eyes widening in clear disbelief.

I nodded in Theresa’s direction who was still making calls at the back, "She just offered me not too long ago... What should I do?"

I was honestly expecting Ries to find it cool and to encourage me to go or something... But surprisingly...

"Don’t do it, Boss! Please!"

I blinked in surprise, "Eh? You... Don’t want me to go?"

"Of course not, Boss! If you were to accept their offer, you would be a full time staff and we would have to stop our journey!"

"Ah... That’s what I thought too, don’t worry about it. I already rejected her on this basis anyway."

Ries then peeked at the back to look at Theresa who was still on her personal terminal making calls before turning back to me.

"So... What is she doing now?"

I shrugged, "I dunno... After I told her that I don’t want to settle down, she told me to wait and started calling people again."

As though on cue, Theresa stored away her personal terminal again and skipped over to me, looking even more happy than earlier.

"Good news, miss Tera!! We don’t need you to work for us part time! We’re happy to commission you as a Mercenary for you to work for us for just a set period of time! In fact, we are happy to let you choose how long you are willing to work for us! We can even do something like giving you a contract where you will be paid weekly and as soon as you decide you wish to leave, we will let you leave, no questions asked! How about that?"

"That sounds... A little too good to be true?" I pointed out.

"Oh, I assure you that it is true! All we need is for you to pilot a few of our Exo-Knights so that we can gather data on them! You will definitely be properly compensated for this! Name your price, miss Tera!"

I was about to reject her again when Ries suddenly grabbed my hand, prompting me to turn to her to see that she had a pretty excited look on her face.

"Boss! You have to go! You have to go!!"

Eh? Didn’t you just tell me not to go like just a few moments ago, Ries? You seemed so against it too but--

Oh... I just realised that I didn’t tell her what exactly they were trying to hire me for so she probably thought I was being scouted as some salesperson or something.

But why does that even matter?

I didn’t even get to ask her that before Ries turned towards Theresa, "You will be bringing us into the Inner Colonies, right?!"

Theresa nodded, "Of course! Our Exo-Knight testings are all done in the Inner Colonies in a confidential location that is known only to our people! Oh! And I’m aware that you have a crew so we would be doing all the necessary information you need to be issued a pass to enter the Inner Colonies! I just need the information of your Mercenary company and I can request a pass for your group!"

Ok... This changes a lot of things then. Now I know why Ries was so excited about this... And truth be told, so was I.

I cleared my throat, "Ahem... What if I were to... Reject this offer?"

She then smiled sweetly at me, "Oh my, Miss Tera... You did use our company’s assets without our permission after all. Shall we say that we are willing to overlook this if you at least help us with this for a short period of time?" 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

Hmm... So it’s blackmail huh... I guess I should say that I’m just glad that they didn’t open this with that from the start.

But just as I thought of that, there was a sudden movement and Ries who had been at my side was now standing in front of Theresa with her pistol out and pointing at Theresa’s head.

I would just like to say that Theresa was taller than Ries so she had to point the gun upwards at her and it would have looked comical if it wasn’t a serious situation.

Ries growled at her, "If you try to blackmail Boss again... I will take your life and make sure your body isn’t found."

I panicked, "Ries?! What are you doing?!"

She turned back to pout at me, "But Boss... We helped them and they think they can take advantage of us? They need to know their place!"

"Do you intend to fight an entire corporation?!"

"Hmm? I mean... If we have to, we could, right? It’s not like we don’t have the firepower to do so~"

Ugh... I bet she’s thinking about the fact that we have three Psionics on our side... But you know there’s other ways a company can screw us over right?

I looked in the direction of Theresa to see what her response was and she was still maintaining her smiling face though it was clear it was now a little more strained than before.

Well... This has gotten a little awkward...
