When Love is a Question Mark-Chapter 259: Bring Back to Life
Zinnia, her hands shaking, stepped forward and gently wrapped her arm around her mother’s shoulders, pulling her back. She whispered softly, her voice breaking, "Mom, we need to let them help Dad. Please, we have to give them space."
Elena collapsed into her arms, her sobs shaking her small frame. "Zinnia, he can’t leave us. He can’t—he’s everything to me. Please, don’t take him from me," she begged, her voice desperate, full of sorrow.
Zinnia fought the tears that threatened to spill. She didn’t know how to comfort her mother in this moment, how to make her believe that everything would be okay. "He won’t leave, Mom," Zinnia whispered, her voice thick with unshed tears. "He’s strong. He’s going to pull through, I know it."
But even as she said the words, she wasn’t sure if she believed them herself.
The room was filled with the rapid, rhythmic sound of chest compressions, the beeping of the machines, and the doctor’s clipped instructions. "Increase the IV fluids, double check the oxygen levels—monitor his vitals closely."
Zinnia could barely hear the doctor’s voice over the pounding of her own heart, each second stretching on forever. Every time the monitor beeped, her heart skipped a beat, and she felt like the world was slipping out of her hands.
"Dad," she whispered under her breath, her voice raw with emotion. She bent forward, her eyes never leaving her father’s pale face, his once steady breathing now shallow and erratic. "Please... don’t leave us. We still need you. Please." 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞
Her mother clung to her, her sobs muffled against Zinnia’s shoulder as they both stood by, helpless. The chaos of the room swirled around them, but all Zinnia could focus on was her father. Was he going to make it? Was this it?
"Come on, Ricardo," the doctor muttered under his breath, his eyes locked on the monitors as he worked furiously to stabilize him. "Stay with us."
Zinnia felt her pulse in her throat as she held onto her mother, her body shaking with the fear that she couldn’t suppress. Every moment felt like it could be the last, but she refused to leave him. She refused to give up.
The minutes stretched on, each one dragging like an eternity. Zinnia’s legs felt weak, her whole body trembling with the effort to stay upright, but she couldn’t look away. She couldn’t leave the room, not when her father’s life hung in the balance.
And then, finally, after what felt like hours, the erratic beeping of the machine began to steady. The tremors in Ricardo’s body began to slow, and his breathing became more regular.
"He’s stabilizing," one of the nurses said, her voice filled with a mix of relief and caution.
Zinnia let out a breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding. Her entire body seemed to release the tension that had been coiled so tightly in her chest. But even as the crisis seemed to pass, she couldn’t shake the fear that still clung to her.
Elena, too, seemed to sag with exhaustion, her sobs quieter now but still present. She leaned into Zinnia’s arms for support, her face pale but showing the faintest glimmer of hope.
The doctor took a deep breath, his face serious yet tempered with a touch of cautious relief. He wiped the sweat from his forehead with a towel before turning to face Zinnia and her mother, both of whom were visibly trembling with anxiety.
"He’s stable for now," the doctor began, his voice steady but filled with a gravity that made Zinnia’s heart sink. "But we need to be realistic. He just had heart surgery the other day, and what’s happening now—it’s not uncommon, but it does complicate things."
Zinnia’s breath caught in her throat. She held her mother tightly, refusing to let go, her own voice a fragile whisper. "Complications?"
The doctor nodded, his eyes never leaving the monitors, which still blinked with the erratic beeping of her father’s unstable heart. "He’s been in a deep sedation since the surgery. We’ve kept him under for a good reason. His body needs time to heal, but he hasn’t woken up yet. That’s worrying. It’s a sign that his heart might not be responding as well as we hoped."
Elena, her voice quivering with emotion, pulled herself up from the chair and looked desperately at the doctor. "Why isn’t he waking up? Is that... normal?"
Zinnia’s own chest tightened at her mother’s question, but she tried to stay calm, to offer a sense of stability. She was trying not to let the fear she felt break through, for her mother’s sake.
"We’ve been monitoring his brain function as well, Mrs. Lopez," the doctor explained, taking a step closer. "The sedatives we administered after surgery could be contributing to his lack of response, but we also need to consider that his heart surgery has put a tremendous strain on his body. His heart is weak, and sometimes, when the heart is struggling, it affects other systems in the body, including the brain’s ability to wake up."
Zinnia’s heart twisted in her chest, and she glanced at her father’s still, pale face. His eyes were closed, his lips slightly parted as if he was resting, but the unspoken truth in the room was that it felt like a long, unnerving slumber.
"Will he wake up?" Elena’s voice cracked as she reached for her husband’s hand, tears welling in her eyes. "Doctor, please... will he wake up?"
The doctor met her gaze with a softness that didn’t erase the concern in his eyes. "It’s too soon to say, Mrs. Lopez. We need to continue monitoring his brain activity and his vitals closely. The next 24 to 48 hours will be crucial. His body is under stress, and while his heart isn’t giving out, his recovery from surgery is a long road. We’re doing everything we can to keep him stable."
Zinnia tried to process the doctor’s words, but they felt like an avalanche, piling up in her mind. Her father—the man who had always been the rock of their family—was fighting for his life, and all they could do was wait.
"How long until we know for sure if he’s going to wake up?" Zinnia asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
