When Love is a Question Mark-Chapter 260: Fragile Hope
The doctor exhaled slowly, glancing at Ricardo’s unconscious form. "As I said, it’s difficult to predict. His brain activity shows some signs of life, but he’s still deeply sedated. We’ll keep him on a strict monitoring schedule, checking his oxygen levels, blood pressure, and brain function. We’ll adjust his medications as needed. But for now, all we can do is wait."
Zinnia’s heart ached at the sound of her mother’s soft sobs. She held her mother tightly, trying to be strong even as her own resolve began to crack. "Mom, we have to be strong. For Dad," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "He’s fighting. He’s always fought. We can’t give up on him."
Elena nodded, but the fear in her eyes was unmistakable. "I don’t know how much longer I can take this, Zinnia. What if he... What if he doesn’t come back to us?" 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
The doctor stepped closer, his tone firm but kind. "I understand this is a difficult situation, but we’re doing everything we can to keep him stable. He’s in good hands, and we have the best team here. His recovery is fragile, but we’re focused on getting him through this."
Zinnia nodded, feeling her chest tighten. "We just... need him to wake up. To be here with us. He’s always been the one to hold us together."
The doctor placed a reassuring hand on Elena’s shoulder, his voice gentle yet resolute. "You’re right. And we’ll continue doing everything we can to make that happen. But remember, recovery takes time. You need to be patient with him—and with yourselves."
Zinnia squeezed her mother’s hand. "We’ll be here, Mom. We’ll wait for him. No matter how long it takes."
Elena clung to her daughter, the sobs slowly subsiding but leaving behind an ache that neither of them could shake. Zinnia, holding onto her mother, fought back the overwhelming sense of helplessness that surged through her.
After what felt like hours, the doctor gave them one last glance. "We’ll be monitoring him closely, and we’ll keep you updated every step of the way. Right now, we need to give him the best chance to heal."
He turned and walked toward the door, leaving them to their thoughts in the heavy silence. Zinnia could feel her heart racing, the fear creeping back in. But she held her mother tightly, refusing to let go.
"He’s strong, Mom," Zinnia whispered again, though even she wasn’t certain. "He’s strong. He’ll wake up."
As her words echoed in the sterile room, the uncertainty and fear of the unknown lingered.
Then the door swung open with a force that made both Zinnia and Elena jump. Panting slightly, standing there was James. His face etched with worry,His hair was disheveled, and his tie hung loose, as if he had abandoned whatever he was doing and rushed here without a second thought.
"Zinnia," he said lowly, concerned. He came into the room, his gaze shifting between her and Elena and finally to Ricardo’s still pale form on the hospital bed. "I heard there was some commotion here. How is your father?"
Zinnia blinked, thrown off by his sudden appearance. She hadn’t expected him—not even to call him in the chaos of the past hour. Her throat constricted as she tried to find the words, but they stuck, the weight of everything pressing down on her.
"James," Elena whispered, taking a step forward, but exhaustion overcame her. She clutched Zinnia’s arm for support and tears began welling up again in her eyes. "He’s. he’s still not awake."
He frowned deeply, his jaw tightening as he moved closer. He glanced at the machines surrounding Ricardo, his worry only deepening at the sight of the blinking monitors and the faint rise and fall of Ricardo’s chest. "What did the doctor say? Is he stable?"
Zinnia inhaled sharply, her hands trembling as she tried to steady herself. "They said he’s stable for now, but." Her voice cracked, and she looked down, swallowing hard to keep her emotions in check. "But he hasn’t woken up. They’re keeping him sedated to let his body recover."
James’s brow furrowed as he digested her words. He took another step forward, his eyes never leaving Ricardo’s face. "Not awake." he murmured, almost to himself. Then he turned back to Zinnia, his expression both firm and gentle. "But he’s stable, right? That’s something. That’s good."
Zinnia nodded, but the tears she had been holding back began to spill over. "It doesn’t feel good, James. He’s just lying there. He hasn’t moved since the surgery. The doctor said the next 24 to 48 hours are critical."
He paused, hesitating for a moment before reaching out, his hand hovering over hers as if not sure if he should touch her. Then, deciding, he put his hand lightly over hers, his warmth settling her into the tumult of emotions swirling inside. "He’s a fighter, Zinnia. I know he is. He’ll get through this."
Elena rubbed away tears streaming down her cheeks with a hand that shook. Her voice was barely above a whisper. "He’s never been like this. This silent. Ricardo’s always been the one. The strong one. The glue that kept us together."
James turned to her, the quiet conviction clear in his voice. "And he still is, Mrs. Lopez. Even now, he fights. And he’s blessed. He has both of you here, supporting him. That is what makes all the difference."
Elena took a small, shuddering breath, her lips trembling as she tried to smile through her tears. "Thanks, James."
James then turned back to Zinnia, his gaze softening. "How about you? Are you okay?
Zinnia looked at him with exhaustion on her face. She wanted to tell him she was fine, that she didn’t need him worrying about her, but the truth was, she wasn’t okay. She hadn’t been okay since this nightmare started.
"I don’t know," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "I’m just. scared. I don’t know what I’ll do if he—" She stopped, unable to say the words.
