Chapter 107: Chapter 107- What is he trying to do?

The mother and daughter had already exited the elevator and walked out of the hotel lobby. Laurent found a quiet spot, placed his daughter down, and squatted down to face her. Looking at her seriously, he said,

"Emma, your mom and I have already divorced, we’re no longer a family, so your mom can’t celebrate her birthday with me. That wouldn’t be right."

The little girl’s face instantly fell,

"Why?"

"Why can’t dad celebrate mom’s birthday?"

At this age, children are in the "why" phase, always asking questions when they don’t understand something. Adults are often left speechless by these questions.

Sometimes, it’s not that the child’s question doesn’t have an answer, but the answer is too complicated for them to grasp.

Like this question.

The answer to this question involves many aspects, such as marital ethics and so on—how could a child understand all of that?

Before Laurent could figure out how to respond, the little girl asked again,

"Then can I celebrate my birthday with both mommy and daddy?"

This was a question Laurent didn’t need to hesitate on,

"Yes."

"Why?"

The little girl resumed her endless "why" questions,

"Why can I celebrate my birthday with both of you, but mom can’t celebrate hers with dad?"

Laurent’s head was starting to hurt. He picked up his daughter and stood up, heading toward the street to hail a taxi.

While considering how to phrase his response, he answered her,

"Because you are daddy and mommy’s child, you have a blood relationship with both of us. So, naturally, when it’s your birthday, your mom and dad will celebrate with you."

The little girl seemed to understand, but not entirely,

"Then I’ll just celebrate my birthday tomorrow, because I want to be with both mommy and daddy."

Children are so innocent, thinking that any day can be their birthday.

But sometimes, their innocence strikes right at the hearts of adults.

Just like now, Laurent’s heart ached sharply at his daughter’s words, the pain so strong that he couldn’t even gather the strength to hold her anymore.

Not knowing how to continue the conversation, he fell silent.

A taxi stopped in front of the hotel. He sat in the car with his daughter.

Tears slipped from the corner of his eyes, and he wiped them away as he sat down.

Dave didn’t chase after them. After Laurent left with his daughter, he stood there for a moment, looking around at the room surrounded by flowers and balloons, and at the box on the table that held the bracelet. He let out a self-deprecating laugh.

Her attitude... if he had followed her, it wouldn’t have helped. It would only have pushed her further away.

So, it was better this way.

He turned and headed home.

When Laurent arrived home with his daughter, his parents had just returned from their walk. They were surprised to see her with the little girl.

"What happened?" they asked.

Laurent didn’t say much, just briefly explained,

"Her dad brought her to celebrate my birthday."

Alex snorted sarcastically,

"Oh, he actually remembers it’s your birthday today?"

In Alex’s eyes, Dave never cared about his daughter’s well-being, so how could he possibly remember her birthday?

Cassy shot Alex a glare and walked over to take the little girl into her arms.

"Sweetheart, have you had breakfast yet?"

The little girl suddenly remembered that she had gotten up early to help her dad scatter flower petals all over the room, and hadn’t eaten anything.

She patted her little belly and said,

"Not yet."

Cassy carried the little girl into the room.

"Then Grandma will make you something to eat."

The little girl, like a small tail, followed Cassy and continued talking,

"Grandma, do you know? Dad made the room for mom so beautiful! There were balloons and flowers—"

Before the little girl could finish, Laurent’s stern voice interrupted,

"Emma!"

Laurent didn’t want her parents to know about these things; she feared they would start worrying again. Who knew, she could control herself, but she couldn’t control her daughter, who was babbling away.

This chatty nature... it was definitely inherited from her.

She used to be the same way—talkative, able to say anything, always speaking what was on her mind. But now, she had almost become a completely different person.

Sometimes, Laurent thought about it and realized that the reason she used to be like that was probably because she hadn’t experienced much hardship, her thoughts were too simple.

Although the little girl had only said a few things, both Alex and Cassy had picked up on the clues. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

"What’s going on?"

Alex was immediately furious, his face darkening as he asked her. Laurent could only briefly explain Dave’s actions to her parents.

She didn’t mention the things he had said or his apology, fearing that if her father found out about what Dave had said, he would be even angrier. So she only mentioned that he had decorated the room for her birthday.

However, even just saying that was enough to make Alex livid.

He shouted angrily,

"What is he trying to do?"

"After the divorce, he can’t let you go? Who does he think he is? Do I need to buy him a rocket and send him to the sky?"

Laurent knew her father would be upset, so she stepped forward to calm him down,

"Alright, Dad, don’t get mad at him. Let’s just ignore him."

"Fine, tomorrow when we send Emma back, I’ll personally take her."

Alex was still fuming, unable to let it go, and quickly made up his mind,

"I’m going to pay a visit to his parents and ask them what kind of education they’ve been giving their son!"

Laurent looked at her father with a helpless expression.

She hadn’t told her parents about Dave’s parents also going through a divorce. She figured, since she was already divorced from Dave and had no further ties with the Burg Eltz family, she didn’t want to bring it up.

Now that her father insisted on visiting them, it would be awkward, especially since Tiffany didn’t want to appear with Daniel.

The last time Laurent visited her daughter, she had spoken with Tiffany.

Tiffany had said that she and Daniel were currently separated because Daniel refused to agree to the divorce. Tiffany’s plan was to just keep living separately, and when the legally required separation period passed, they would naturally divorce.

Since Laurent herself was divorced, she didn’t know how to offer advice on the matter.

After all, Tiffany had treated her well, and Daniel had also been kind to her. She couldn’t bring herself to support Tiffany’s decision to divorce, as that would make Daniel upset, nor could she encourage Tiffany to continue the marriage, as that would make Tiffany uncomfortable. So, she remained silent.

Now, with her father insisting on visiting Daniel and Tiffany, Laurent had no choice but to tell her parents about their situation and then tried to persuade her father,

"So, Dad, it’s not really appropriate for you to visit them right now."

Alex was shocked when he heard this. After the shock, he scoffed coldly,

"Like father, like son!"

Then, he slammed the door as he walked inside.
