Chapter 106: Chapter 106- are you crazy?

If it weren’t for the fact that their daughter was still there, Laurent would have turned and run.

For her, what Dave had done—saying such affectionate words, looking at her with those eyes—was simply terrifying.

It was so terrifying that all the hairs on her body stood on end.

In the past five years, their marriage hadn’t been cold or distant, just ordinary. But moments of affection were truly few.

The only time Laurent could remember feeling affection from him was during the period after her miscarriage.

During that time, because she had lost the baby, she had a breakdown. She thought it was her punishment, that she didn’t deserve to have him in such a way, and she even became so depressed that she needed to see a psychologist.

She had even strongly demanded a divorce, believing that without the child, there was nothing left between them.

He had only married her because of the child. Without the child, her existence held no meaning.

She remembered how he had held her and gently comforted her, telling her she was still young and they would have children in the future.

She cried even harder in his arms, asking him through her tears, "Will we have children again? Will you still touch me?"

The reason he touched her was because he had been drunk.

When he was sober, would he still touch her? If he didn’t, how could they have children again?

She was desperate, and then he kissed her.

Looking back, that was the only moment of warmth he had shown her in their marriage.

But at that time, she was in so much pain from losing the child, and the pain dulled the affection, to the point where, now, those moments of warmth from him were almost nonexistent in her heart.

That was why she found him so terrifying now.

Avoiding his gaze, she bent down and picked up their daughter, kissing her little face.

"Sweetheart, thank you. Mommy is very happy."

The "happy" was meant for her daughter, not for him.

"Mom, Daddy has something to say to you."

After the little girl said that to Laurent, she wriggled out of her arms before Laurent even had a chance to react. In a flash, the little girl ran to the wicker chair by the window and started playing by herself, leaving the two of them alone.

Of course, Dave had already spoken to their daughter in advance, telling her that when Mommy arrived, he had something to say to her, and that she should play by herself for a while.

The little girl cooperated willingly.

Once their daughter had left, Dave stepped forward and raised his hand to close the door behind Laurent. Laurent instinctively took a step back, looking at him with caution.

Seeing her reaction, Dave couldn’t help but speak with some helplessness,

"I... I owe you an apology. Last time when I said ’I wish you happiness,’ I spoke out of turn because I was drunk. I know you’re not that kind of person."

"Sorry."

He said the last word with great sincerity.

Laurent knew his temperament and understood that for someone as proud as him, apologizing in such a humble manner was not easy.

However, at this moment, no matter how low he lowered himself, she still found it quite laughable.

"Last time, you said that you’d never love me in this lifetime, and you claimed it was just a moment of anger. This time, you called me that kind of promiscuous woman and now say it was a slip of the tongue because of alcohol."

Laurent’s smile grew colder.

"Dave, how is it that you can always find grand excuses for all the hurtful things you’ve said?"

"Or do you think I’m so easy to deal with that a simple ’I’m sorry’ can fix all this repeated hurt?"

By the end, Laurent’s voice trembled.

Perhaps it was because of the deep scars left in Laurent’s heart from when he didn’t value her, that even after Dave had made two mistakes and tried to apologize, Laurent felt no sincerity from him. Instead, she felt as though he was using the apology to dismiss her, which was just another form of disrespect.

In the past, it was because she loved him that she would endure everything he gave her, whether it was indifference or hurt.

But now, she didn’t want to continue living that way. Of course, she wouldn’t tolerate him any longer.

Dave hadn’t expected his apology to make her this angry, and for a moment, he didn’t know what to do with her.

He had no experience in soothing women, and now, standing there watching her, he felt helpless.

After Laurent finished speaking, she bypassed him, planning to go and take their daughter to leave.

"If there’s nothing else, I’ll take our daughter and go."

She didn’t care for his birthday wishes, nor for the so-called surprise he had arranged. After all, in all those years, he had never celebrated her birthday or remembered it. Now, she didn’t need it either.

Dave wasn’t willing to let her leave. He quickly raised his hand and grabbed her arm.

"How about I sing you a song?"

Although he didn’t know how to sing the song *"Bug Flying"* that their daughter had mentioned, he could still hum a few lines.

Seeing that she was angry and about to leave, he could only steel himself and try to make things better.

Laurent was so shocked by his words that she got goosebumps all over her body. She thought she had misheard him, but looking at his expression, it didn’t seem like he was joking.

Completely frustrated, she yelled at him,

"Dave, are you crazy?"

Laurent had no idea about the inside joke between him and their daughter, where singing a song would make her feel better when she was angry. She just thought he was being completely unreasonable.

Dave tried to explain,

"Didn’t Emma say that when she makes you angry, if I sing a song, you won’t be angry anymore?"

Laurent looked at him as though he were a ghost. She shook off his hand, quickly picked up their daughter, grabbed the little backpack, and stormed out, heading straight for the elevator.

Laurent was almost scared to death by Dave. After rushing into the elevator with their daughter, she still felt shaken.

Before this, Dave had always presented himself as a proud, domineering figure, always in control, saying "this" and "that." But today, he suddenly changed his tune, with birthday surprises, apologies, and even singing songs. Laurent honestly thought he must have taken something wrong.

To her, none of this felt like a surprise—it felt like a shock!

The little girl, who had been caught off guard when Laurent grabbed her, looked confused.

"Mom, aren’t we staying at the hotel to celebrate your birthday? Daddy ordered a cake for you, and he bought you a gift too!"

When Laurent heard her daughter mention the cake and gift, she felt even more irritated.

When it came to his gifts, Laurent’s first thought was always the expensive or limited-edition clothes, jewelry, and handbags from those high-end boutiques.

They were tacky, lacking any real meaning.

Each time she received one, her heart grew colder.

So, in an attempt to change the subject, she responded to her daughter,

"Grandma and Grandpa are so happy to hear you’re here. Let’s celebrate my birthday with them today."

But the little girl was still thinking about Dave.

"What about Daddy?"
