You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 118- because of Laurent
After facing defeat with Laurent, Morrison’s first move was to call Dave and report back, telling him about Laurent’s sharp retort. He sighed,
"I really didn’t expect it. Laurent usually seems so gentle, but she responded so quickly and with such sharp words. She’ll be a real asset at the negotiating table in the future."
Morrison genuinely praised Laurent for her quick reflexes.
On the other end, Dave, upon hearing that Laurent didn’t believe Morrison’s words, was furious.
"So, the job didn’t get done, and now you’re praising her?"
Morrison was completely innocent.
"I’m just telling it like it is. Besides, when she shut me down like that, I really didn’t have anything to say."
Dave snorted coldly.
"Now you understand why I always get shut down when I’m talking to her?"
In the past, whenever Dave had vented to Morrison about his encounters with Laurent, he had been quickly shot down by her sharp tongue and didn’t know how to respond. Morrison had always found it amusing and laughed at him.
Now, Morrison had experienced it himself and would no longer laugh at Dave.
After hanging up with Morrison, Dave went directly to the hotel to find him.
Marylin and Zoey also noticed Dave. Since they had finished breakfast, they decided to leave and give the two of them some space, taking along the little "third wheel," Emma Washington.
The little girl, upon seeing her father enter, happily ran over to greet Dave, then said to him, 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖
"Dad, I’m going for a walk with Aunt Marylin and Aunt Zoey."
At this moment, Dave’s mind was entirely on Laurent, and he couldn’t focus much on his daughter, so he allowed her to go with them.
Laurent had also nearly finished her breakfast. With Dave sitting down in front of her, she had lost the appetite to continue eating. She wiped her mouth with a napkin, then raised her eyes to look at Dave, speaking first.
"I’ve been thinking about what you said last night."
Laurent knew why Dave had come to see her—it was just to get a response from her regarding his confession from last night.
Dave sat quietly, watching her and waiting for her to continue.
Laurent spoke slowly.
"Actually, what you call love is simply the fact that you’re not used to not having me around to take care of your meals and daily needs. You just want a woman who’s always available to sleep with whenever you want—that’s all it is."
"To go deeper, what you feel for me isn’t love either. What you can’t accept is the fact that I initiated the divorce first. What you call love is really just your wounded pride."
Laurent said all of this, but Dave didn’t respond.
Because Morrison had told him yesterday that, over the years, he had never made her feel loved, and no wonder she doubted him. So, he thought it was better to remain silent, allowing her to speak.
The more she said, the more emotions she would reveal, and from her words, he could understand more of her inner feelings.
For instance, right now, he could sense from her words that she was lacking in confidence.
She lacked confidence in her own charm, believing that the only reason he couldn’t live without her was out of habit, rather than genuine love for her. So, she attributed all his feelings toward her to habit.
Seeing that he remained silent, Laurent continued.
"If I told you that I won’t treat you the same way I did before, that I would split my attention between you and my work, would you still choose to pursue me?"
Just as Dave had guessed, Laurent wasn’t confident. She believed that all of his current feelings for her were out of habit, which was why she asked such a question.
She wasn’t testing Dave; she had truly made up her mind to focus more on her work in the future. Even if the man pursuing her wasn’t Dave, but someone else, she would still ask him the same thing.
"If I told you that you don’t have to do anything, that you can focus all your attention on your work, as long as you’re willing to come back to me, would you agree?"
Dave didn’t directly answer Laurent’s question. Instead, he narrowed his eyes and asked her this.
Laurent inwardly sneered at him. Cunning old fox!
He was forcing her to give him an answer in such a subtle way.
"No!"
She immediately replied without any hesitation, then reached for her phone on the table, intending to get up and leave.
Anyone could speak sweet words, but how many could actually follow through? Otherwise, how would the saying "easier said than done" exist?
To her surprise, Dave reached out and grabbed her hand before she could pick up the phone. She couldn’t pull away, and so, unable to leave, she glared at him.
"Let go!"
Instead, he tightened his grip.
"It’s fine if you don’t treat me well in the future. I’ll treat you well instead."
Laurent froze in her attempt to break free, and lifted her eyes to look at him.
Laurent admitted, his gaze was sincere, his expression earnest.
However, in that moment, all she could think of was the scene of him being with Clark, those moments that felt like a sharp thorn, stabbing deep into her heart, making it impossible for her to let go.
She didn’t mind his past with Clark from five years ago; after all, it happened before their marriage. But when Clark returned to the country and everything that happened afterward, she couldn’t help but care.
Because that happened after their marriage!
As a married woman, his ambiguous and entangled relationship with another woman was a huge disrespect to her as his wife.
Even if he had offered some explanation, it would at least show that he respected her in some way. But he hadn’t said a single word of explanation.
She couldn’t think about it. As soon as she did, thinking of his unresolved connection with Clark, she became furious. She felt a deep coldness all over her body. She sneered.
"You’re pursuing me like this—what would Clark think?"
Suddenly bringing up Clark, Dave’s expression froze for a moment, then he quickly began to explain.
"I know my relationship with Clark hurt you deeply, and I owe you an explanation."
"I have nothing with her. After she returned to the country, she was in a terrible situation, and out of sympathy, I continued to stay in contact with her."
Dave was desperately explaining, but to Laurent, his words sounded so ridiculous.
"Out of sympathy, you can stay at her place every night? Out of sympathy, you can leave me and our daughter in Japan? Do you even see me as your wife?"
This was the first time since their separation that Laurent directly questioned him about Clark. Dave was taken aback by the despair in her eyes, and for a moment, he didn’t know how to respond.
He hadn’t realized that these matters had hurt her so deeply, to the point where there was no trace of warmth in her gaze when she looked at him.
And in the silence that followed Dave’s inability to speak, Laurent forcefully pulled her hand out of his grip, stood up, and left without looking back.
Laurent felt frustrated with herself. She really didn’t want to bring up the past with Dave. Every time she did, she felt foolish, and it only made her desire to sever ties with him even stronger.
But his relentless pursuit pushed her to a breaking point, and she couldn’t help but say it.
Dave didn’t try to chase after Laurent. He knew that it wouldn’t help, and besides, after repeatedly failing to get a smile or any approval from her, he was feeling defeated.
As for Clark, after returning from his business trip, he had gone to see her.
Clark had been in a good state recently, and Dave had also consulted her attending physician. The doctor said that if Clark continued to cooperate with her treatment, she would recover soon.
Considering Clark’s good mental state, he decided to have an honest conversation with her.
"I’m glad to see you recovering," he said. "If you ever need anything, just call my secretary."
After speaking, he placed his secretary’s business card in front of Clark.
Clark glanced at the business card, then nervously looked up at him.
"Dave, what... what do you mean by this?"
He explained his stance.
"I might not be able to take your calls or visit you anymore. The way things are now, Burg Eltz owes you, but we’ll ensure your future is taken care of."
The meaning behind his words was clear: she was to no longer contact him directly, but rather reach out to his secretary for any future matters.
He represented Burg Eltz, and they could support her for the rest of her life, but their relationship would end here.
Clark wasn’t dense and understood exactly what he was implying. She lowered her eyes and stared blankly at the cold, unfamiliar business card.
"It’s because of Laurent, isn’t it?"
He didn’t deny it.
