You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 128- Twisting the truth
Moreover, she had no reason to confide in him—he wasn’t anyone special to her.
When he was her man, her sky, her husband, she had rarely shown her vulnerabilities before him, let alone now that he was no longer any of those things.
Dave looked at her indifferent attitude towards him and knew that asking further wouldn’t get him any answers, so he had to give up.
She wouldn’t say it, but did she think he wouldn’t investigate on his own?
Still, since she refused to tell him why he was looking for her, he continued eating at his leisurely pace. At least this way, he could look at her a little longer, right?
She sat across from him, her head lowered as she looked at her phone. Her delicate, palm-sized face was cool and indifferent. Her medium-length curls cascaded down, one side tucked behind her ear while the other draped down naturally, carrying an effortless allure. From his angle, the sight was particularly captivating.
He picked up the glass of water beside him and took a sip, suppressing the heat stirring within him before speaking about the real matter at hand. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
"It’s like this..."
As his voice sounded, she finally looked up at him, her gaze calm, her expression indifferent.
A sudden reckless impulse surged in Dave’s heart—he wanted to kiss her, to press her into his embrace and ravage her, to tear apart that serene expression on her face. He wanted to see the same passion and obsession she once had for him reflected in her eyes again. He wanted to see her lost in ecstasy beneath him.
Only then would the emptiness and unease in his heart dissipate.
But in the end, it was just an impulse—nothing more.
After the impulse came a swift calmness. Dave knew that if he truly acted on that impulse, it would only push their relationship into an irreversible deadlock, with no chance of recovery.
Laurent noticed that Dave had been staring at him in silence for a while, his gaze so bare and intense. Annoyed, he spoke up,
"If you don’t say anything, I’m leaving!"
It was only then that Dave snapped out of his trance.
"Wait."
After pouring himself another glass of water, he got down to business.
"In a few days, I have a client coming to Burg Eltz for an inspection. He’s a very important client for one of my major projects."
Dave first emphasized the client’s importance before continuing,
"This client is a bit strange—he absolutely despises couples who aren’t affectionate with each other, he hates families with troubled relationships..."
"So what does that have to do with me?"
Laurent had already figured out Dave’s intentions, which was why he purposely responded in this way.
Laurent found it somewhat laughable. Did he expect her to pretend to be a married couple for the sake of his client?
What was the point of that?
In the end, it would be fake. And fake would eventually be exposed.
True couples and fake couples were fundamentally different, even if they had only been divorced for a short time.
Because of psychological factors, it was impossible to truly blend into a real daily married life.
Dave’s dark eyes fixed on her.
"Of course it has something to do with you. When I first negotiated this project, the client found out I was married and even said that when he visits Burg Eltz, I should bring you along to meet them..."
As he spoke, Laurent suddenly felt an inexplicable frustration rise within her. She coldly rejected him,
"Sorry, I don’t think I can help you with this."
She stood up, grabbed her bag,
"You can be honest with your client about your divorce, or you can find another woman to play the role of a loving couple with you. I’m sure, with your abilities, there are plenty of ways you can solve this problem."
"Also, thanks for dinner."
After saying that, she turned and walked toward the door.
How laughable. Truly laughable.
Her ex-husband actually came to ask his ex-wife to pretend to be a couple. Heh.
How could he think she would help him with this? Did he still think she held him in such high regard? Did he think he could still take whatever he wanted from her like before?
No. She wouldn’t be that foolish anymore. And he no longer had the right!
But Dave had already moved ahead of her, blocking her at the door.
"Don’t you think you should take half the responsibility for this?"
He knew she wouldn’t agree, so he had prepared himself.
Laurent found it absurd. His work, his project—what responsibility did she have?
Even before their divorce, she had never been involved in his company’s affairs. Now, when something went wrong at work, how could he blame her for it?
Dave spoke with righteous conviction,
"When I first negotiated this project, I never expected to get a divorce. It was you who insisted on the divorce. Now you refuse to help me, which means you’re indirectly causing me to lose this project. So, shouldn’t you take some responsibility?"
Laurent: "..."
She was so enraged by his words that she almost couldn’t breathe, yet she found herself speechless. Apart from glaring at him in disbelief, she couldn’t think of a way to respond.
When she finally regained her composure, she realized she didn’t know when he had slipped his arm around her shoulders and sat her back down. He had originally been sitting across from her, but now he was beside her.
She slapped his hand away, protesting angrily,
"Sharp-tongued! Twisting the truth!"
Dave switched tactics, taking a more familial approach, speaking softly,
"Even if you don’t consider me, you should think about our daughter."
Laurent was once again stunned as she looked at him. Not only had he shifted the blame onto her, but now he was bringing up their daughter. Laurent could hardly imagine what other excuses he might come up with.
When he mentioned their daughter, Dave’s expression softened a little.
"I only have Emma as my child. In the future, everything under the Washington name will be inherited by her. If you help me secure this project now, all the benefits will go to Emma. Why wouldn’t you want to help?"
Laurent was completely exasperated with Dave.
He was truly too skilled at twisting the facts. First, he pinned the responsibility on her, and now he had escalated it to involving their daughter.
