You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 158- Love, after all, should be mutual.
Because Laurent didn’t understand French at all, she just focused on eating.
Dave knew some basic French, so his communication with Mr. Brown went smoothly. Occasionally, he acted as a translator for her.
Mrs. Brown, though quite old, still behaved like a little child in front of Mr. Brown. Sometimes she would act spoiled, cover her mouth and giggle coquettishly, or scold him playfully like a young girl.
Laurent couldn’t help but feel envious.
She had once thought that this was the best kind of love, but as time passed, she had become increasingly silent in front of Dave, the man she loved, and began to doubt the truth of that idea.
Over time, she came to understand. The truth of that saying relied on the premise that the man you loved also loved you back. What she had with Dave before, that couldn’t truly be called love.
Love, after all, should be mutual.
But now, looking at Mr. and Mrs. Brown, she saw the kind of love described in that saying once again.
She thought it was beautiful.
One day, when your face is full of wrinkles and your hair is gray, you can still smile like a little girl in front of the man you love, throw a tantrum, act willfully, and be spoiled by him unconditionally, simply because he indulges and cherishes you.
Feeling deeply moved, she couldn’t help but say to Dave beside her,
"Can you translate something for me to say to them?"
Dave raised an eyebrow and looked at her.
"What do you want to say?"
Laurent then told him the sentence she wanted translated.
After listening to her, Dave looked at her with a deep gaze for a moment, before finally translating it for her. After hearing the translation, the Browns were quite pleased, especially Mrs. Brown, who seemed excited and started speaking animatedly to Dave.
Laurent couldn’t understand anything they were saying. After discussing the translation with the Browns, Dave turned to her and said in a low voice:
"Every woman has the skill to turn back time in front of the man she loves. You can too. Besides, you’re not even old."
His words subtly hinted that Laurent could continue to act spoiled and childish in front of him, just like she did in the past.
Laurent definitely understood the meaning behind his words. She was on the verge of retorting that he was no longer the man she loved.
But the current setting didn’t allow for such a blunt response, so she just lowered her head and continued eating, pretending she hadn’t heard him.
Dave glanced at her pretending to be deaf and mute, but didn’t say anything further.
When she had spoken that earlier sentence, there had clearly been an unmissable trace of envy in her eyes, showing that deep down, she still longed for the kind of love described in those words.
He then recalled another wise saying:
"If you love someone, take her on a trip.
If, after the trip, you’re still together,
then get married."
He thought that it might be time to take her on a trip.
After breakfast, Dave and Laurent returned to the villa. As soon as Laurent got back, she locked herself in her room. The first thing she did was open her laptop to check for any work-related emails—her work was her priority now.
Dave changed clothes and lingered outside her door for a while, but when she didn’t come out, he decided to speak up.
"I’m heading to the office..."
There was no response from inside. He shot a glare at the closed door before turning and leaving.
In the morning, Dave and Morrison accompanied the Browns to the office to discuss the project. They also invited the Browns to dinner at their house that evening, which the Browns graciously accepted.
Morrison, standing off to the side, grumbled in protest.
"Are you not inviting me?"
Dave glanced at him and replied.
"The dinner will be with me and Laurent, Mr. and Mrs. Brown. Don’t you think you might be a little... unnecessary?"
Morrison: "..."
So now, was Dave implying that he disliked him for being single and not having a family?
Morrison fumed. Fine, Dave’s so-called "family" was fake anyway, right? They were just pretending to be a couple!
When the morning work session ended, Dave apologized to the Browns and said that Morrison would be accompanying them for lunch. He needed to rush home to take Laurent shopping for groceries.
The Browns didn’t mind at all, so Dave made his successful retreat, leaving Morrison to entertain the Browns.
Dave drove back to the villa. The house was quiet, and what caught his eye was a large, vibrant bouquet of flowers on the coffee table, with another bouquet on the dining table. A fresh floral fragrance filled the air.
Dave’s mood instantly brightened, as if he had returned to the old days when every day was warm and wonderful, peaceful and content.
There was also a faint scent of food coming from the kitchen, so Dave headed that way.
The kitchen was empty.
Dave had come home hungry, and the smell of the food immediately made his stomach growl.
It was the dishes she had cooked herself, which only made him want to eat them even more.
He guessed that Laurent was probably in her bedroom working. He thought about calling her out for lunch, but then remembered she had said she wouldn’t cook for him. Plus, seeing the tiny size of the two little buns she had prepared, he figured she had no intention of sharing with him, so he decided not to bother her.
He took some utensils and quietly made his way to the dining table, sitting down and eating comfortably.
Forget it, he thought. He’d eat first and deal with the consequences later.
Just as he took a bite, he heard the sound of her bedroom door opening.
Laurent had spent the whole morning dealing with emails. Since she hadn’t been sitting in front of the computer all day, the emails had piled up, and she’d been busy catching up on them.
After finishing a call, she remembered her lunch and quickly went to the dining room.
To her surprise, when she walked into the dining room, she saw Dave sitting there, comfortably eating her lunch!
Anger flared up inside her. She stormed over and protested angrily:
"Dave, what are you doing?! This is my lunch!"
Dave had already eaten half of it. He leaned back in his chair, looking innocent.
"I just got back from the office. I was starving after working all morning, and when I saw food in the kitchen, I just helped myself."
