You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 159- nurturing their marriage
Laurent didn’t believe his words. It was obvious that he had deliberately taken advantage of her absence to sneak a bite. He knew that if he asked her to come out and eat together, she wouldn’t have let him have any!
However, there was nothing she could do about it now. He had already eaten, and she couldn’t really do anything about it. At least he had a little conscience and didn’t eat it all.
She shot him a glare and angrily stormed into the kitchen, grabbed the utensils, and sat across from him at the dining table, not holding back at all in her impatience.
"You’re done, so you should leave now, right?"
Dave pointed at the plate in front of him.
"I haven’t finished yet."
The thickness of his skin made Laurent almost want to take his plate and refuse to give it back to him.
She ignored him and lowered her head to eat her own food.
She hadn’t wanted to deal with him, but after a moment’s hesitation, she couldn’t bring herself to be that cold-hearted.
"There’s pizza in the fridge, heat it up yourself."
Upon hearing her words, Dave’s smile instantly brightened.
It wasn’t because he was happy there was pizza to fill his stomach, but because she was still thinking about him.
The fact that she even remembered to tell him about the pizza meant that she hadn’t completely stopped caring about him. She still remembered that he was hungry, and that was enough for him.
"Thanks."
After saying that, he got up to open the fridge and grab the pizza.
After eating two more pizzas, Dave finally felt completely full. It’s said that a full stomach makes one desire more, and now that his hunger was satisfied, those lingering emotions he had started to stir again without him even realizing it.
This caused him to look at Laurent with intense gaze. Laurent, still eating, felt goosebumps rise all over her body under his stare. Frowning, she shooed him away.
"You’ve finished your food, so you should leave now, right?"
She really didn’t understand why he randomly came back.
Hearing her, Dave simply smiled and relaxed, leaning back in his chair.
"I’ve got all afternoon to spend with you, accompanying you to buy ingredients and prepare dinner."
Laurent looked at him with disdain.
"Who needs your company? I don’t need your help, I can handle it myself. You should go back to the office."
Laurent didn’t want to be alone with him for even a second. Who knew what ridiculous thing he might do next? Last night, he had completely scared her.
Besides, the way they interacted now was really awkward—kind of intimate, and from an outsider’s perspective, it even looked sweet and flirtatious.
She had once longed for this kind of interaction with him, but now that it was actually happening, she found it uncomfortable.
Sigh, she really couldn’t figure out what was going on.
As for Laurent’s attempt to get rid of him, Dave pretended not to hear. He got up, went to the study, grabbed a notebook and a pen, and sat back down across from her.
"You eat, and while you’re at it, think about what we need to buy. I’ll write it down, or we’ll forget later."
Laurent was almost speechless. Trying to remind him, she said, "Aren’t you the one who hates going to the supermarket?"
Dave looked up at her and asked in a low voice,
"Do you know why I hate going to places like supermarkets, where there are so many people?"
"Because I hate being stared at, especially by women!"
Thinking about those moments made him irritated. Laurent could easily picture the scene—he was too eye-catching with his looks, and being the heir to one of the most prominent families, Burg Eltz, he attracted attention wherever he went.
"You really think differently from others. Most people enjoy being looked at; they think of it as a form of pride and glory."
Laurent was just learning the reason why he didn’t like going to the supermarket—it was because he didn’t want to be stared at.
"People stare at you because you’re handsome. Who would look at an ugly person? And you still find it annoying?"
Dave’s face darkened.
"The way those women look at me is scary. I’m sure their thoughts aren’t pure, so I really don’t like it."
Laurent burst into laughter.
"So what if they look at you and fantasize for a bit? They’re not actually going to sleep with you."
It was just a few extra glances. The way he was furrowing his brow, looking like he was in real discomfort, it was as if all those women were about to pounce on him.
"That’s still not okay!"
Dave firmly objected.
"Only you are allowed to have those impure thoughts about me. They can’t have them. But I can’t stop their thoughts, so the only thing I can do is avoid letting them see me."
Laurent, "...."
She couldn’t help but feel like, sometimes, he was ridiculously childish.
And what did he mean by saying she could have those "impure thoughts" about him?
Well, she used to have them, often. She had once been one of those women who secretly lusted after him.
Because of Dave’s stubbornness and persistence, Laurent reluctantly kept eating while thinking about the menu she needed to prepare for dinner. She then listed all the ingredients she would need, and Dave wrote them all down across from her.
Dave stared at the paper he’d filled up, sitting completely still, looking as serious as if he was preparing for battle. Laurent had finished eating and was about to clean the dishes when she noticed his intense expression and couldn’t help but ask,
"What are you doing? You look like you’re about to go to war."
She was almost scared.
"I think our task this afternoon is too difficult. Have you finished? If you have, we should hurry and head out to buy the ingredients."
Dave looked at the list of dishes, his head spinning.
To him, just one of those dishes would take half the afternoon to make, let alone so many.
However, he forgot that Laurent was very skilled at handling this.
"What’s so difficult about it?"
Laurent said this and got up to clean the dishes, heading into the kitchen. She had cooked far grander feasts before.
Dave watched her go into the kitchen, his voice catching as he spoke.
"Before... I’m sorry for making you work so hard..."
Marriage needed effort to nurture, but he had neglected that in the past. He had relied on her love for him, never truly putting the time and care into nurturing their marriage.
