You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 169- the two people at fault.
Mr. Brown and Dave had been facing off for quite a while, and by almost midnight, Dave finally made a call to ask Laurent to come over.
After Laurent quickly tidied herself up, she went to the Browns’ room. As soon as she opened the door, Mr. Brown’s grim expression and displeasure made Laurent feel an unsettling premonition.
Sure enough, as she walked in, she saw the report about Dave and Clark on the table. In that instant, she realized exactly what had happened—Mr. Brown must have found out about her and Dave pretending to be a married couple.
Standing there, she glanced at Dave. He raised his hand and pulled her onto the sofa next to him, gripping her hand firmly with a protective instinct. Then he turned to Mr. Brown and said,
"Alright, she’s here. If you have any questions, go ahead and ask."
Mr. Brown glanced at their intertwined hands before turning his gaze to Laurent.
"I heard you were the one insisting on the divorce. Why did you agree to help him with this charade?"
Dave translated it for her, and Laurent frowned in thought.
Honestly, she had no answer to this question, and it had come so suddenly. She hadn’t expected that on the final afternoon before the Browns were to leave, they would be exposed.
After a moment’s reflection, she thought, since they had already been exposed, there was no need to hide anything anymore. She wasn’t one to lie, so she told the truth about why she had agreed to help Dave.
"He said if I helped him with this act, he’d stop bothering me."
Dave glared at her, angry. He thought that after last night, she should have accepted him again.
So, shouldn’t her answer be that she still loved him and was helping him out of that love? How could she say it was so that he wouldn’t bother her anymore?
However, Mr. Brown was urging him to translate, so he had no choice but to translate her exact words.
Unexpectedly, after hearing it, Mrs. Brown suddenly burst into laughter. She gave the two of them a meaningful look before finally saying to Dave,
"Even if it’s just an act, the fact that she’s willing to help you is your good fortune."
Dave was momentarily stunned by Mrs. Brown’s words.
Yes, it truly was his good fortune.
He should be grateful for his timely realization, for recognizing his feelings for her, and he should indeed be grateful that she was willing to play along with him. Otherwise, their relationship wouldn’t have progressed so quickly.
Mrs. Brown then tried to comfort Mr. Brown,
"Alright, let’s pack up and get ready to leave. The contract is already signed. If you don’t want to cooperate with them, just breach the contract when you get back."
Mrs. Brown said it so casually, and with their financial power and influence, even if they breached the contract, they could afford to pay the penalty. However, in this situation, since Dave had deceived them first, it seemed that Washington’s side wouldn’t be too eager to demand compensation.
Laurent didn’t understand French, but from Mrs. Brown’s expression, she could guess the general idea. Her heart tightened a little. Even though she didn’t fully understand the project they were discussing, she knew both Washington and the Mo family were involved. Dave and his team had been preparing for this for so long, and if everything fell apart because they were exposed, it would be such a shame and a real regret.
But Laurent didn’t know what to do, so she looked up at Dave. To her surprise, he showed no sign of panic or urgency, which only made her feel more uncertain.
In fact, Dave was also playing a game. He knew that Mr. Brown wasn’t the type to be completely heartless. With the hospitality he and Laurent had received these past few days, and with Washington’s combined strength, Dave believed Mr. Brown had already made some judgments in his mind.
There was silence between everyone as they watched Mr. Brown pack up to leave. Laurent quickly stepped forward and spoke up,
"Mr. Brown, please wait a moment."
She glanced at Dave, signaling him to help translate, and then turned back to Mr. Brown, saying,
"I heard that you particularly dislike men who can’t manage their families well, but sometimes the failure of a marriage is not solely one person’s fault. The reason we ended up divorcing is not just because of him; I also made mistakes. So why should you measure his work abilities based on his success in managing a family? I hope you can evaluate him as a person, objectively!"
After Laurent finished speaking, Dave refused to translate for her. He just stared at her, and Laurent urged him,
"What are you doing? Hurry up and translate!"
Dave asked her,
"Are you saying this to please Mr. Brown, or is this your true analysis of our marriage?"
"What does it matter to you? Just translate it for him!" Laurent was desperate, but Dave stubbornly refused to translate.
"No, I don’t think you are at fault. You did your best. It’s my fault. I didn’t cherish you."
Laurent didn’t know what to say. Wasn’t the priority for them to work together and stop Mr. Brown from canceling the contract, rather than debating who was right or wrong about their marriage?
Since Dave refused to translate, Mr. Brown, frustrated, urged him to do so. Finally, Dave translated Laurent’s words for Mr. Brown, but he added an explanation at the end,
"However, I believe she is not at fault. The failure of our marriage is all my fault. If you truly don’t want to work with someone like me, I have no objection."
After hearing this, Mr. Brown glared at them both, seething with anger.
"Are you two trying to make me listen to your argument about who is at fault?"
Both of them fell silent.
After a moment of silence, Mr. Brown snorted coldly and said to Dave,
"Don’t take your good fortune for granted. This contract wasn’t signed for you; it was signed as a favor to her—such a wonderful, kind, sensible, and family-oriented young lady!"
After Mr. Brown finished speaking, he walked over and gave Laurent a big hug. Laurent was still stunned, not understanding what had just happened. Dave, seeing her confusion, laughed and said,
"Mr. Brown says he signed this contract because of you. You’re the real hero."
When Laurent heard that Mr. Brown was no longer going to cancel the contract, she felt a wave of relief and happiness. She eagerly shook hands with both Mr. and Mrs. Brown, saying,
"That’s wonderful, thank you both so much."
She wasn’t sure why, but at that moment, it felt as if Dave’s matter was her own. She wanted to do everything she could to help him secure this contract.
