Chapter 170: Chapter 170- A hookup?

After Mr. Brown agreed not to cancel the contract, Laurent let out a long sigh of relief. It had been a close call.

In truth, she knew exactly who orchestrated this whole farce—none other than Clark. She was certain Dave knew too.

However, Clark surely didn’t expect Mr. Brown to not cancel the partnership. On the contrary, because of Laurent, Mr. Brown chose to continue the collaboration with Washington. Clark’s plan had backfired, and Laurent couldn’t help but think that Clark must be feeling quite upset about it.

What she didn’t understand, though, was why Clark, who claimed to love Dave, would do something like this. She had intentionally exposed Dave’s divorce to Mr. Brown, causing him to lose the opportunity to work with them. Was this really how Clark showed love?

If you love someone, shouldn’t you want the best for them?

Originally, the Browns were ready to leave in anger, but now that everything had settled, they stayed for lunch at Dave’s invitation. Afterward, they would return to Burg Eltz and be taken to the airport.

During lunch, Dave was particularly attentive toward Laurent. Mr. Brown grunted in a half-amused, half-annoyed way and said,

"Now that we know you’re not actually married, there’s no need to keep up the charade."

It was clear to everyone that Mr. Brown was just venting, so Dave laughed and replied,

"Fake spouses, real couple. You can define us that way now."

Laurent shot him a glare. Who was a real couple with him?

It was just one night, and she hadn’t agreed to anything. In today’s world, one night didn’t mean you were bound for life.

After lunch, the group headed back to Burg Eltz. Once the Browns were seen off, Laurent felt a wave of relief wash over her. She just wanted to get back to her job immediately, and most importantly, she was glad to avoid the awkwardness of facing someone.

Yes, awkwardness—it was truly incredibly awkward.

In truth, Laurent hadn’t prepared herself to accept Dave back into her life. But after what happened between them last night, it wasn’t something she had wanted, which was why she felt so awkward.

What made it even worse was that the whole reason she agreed to pretend to be his wife in the first place was so he would stop bothering her in the future. Yet now, they were becoming even more entangled with each other, which only increased her discomfort.

As she and Dave left the airport lobby and headed for the parking lot, Dave reached out to take Laurent’s hand. Instinctively, Laurent pulled her hand back, avoiding his touch.

Dave frowned, annoyed.

"What are you doing?"

Laurent shot back,

"What are you doing?"

"Give me your hand!"

Dave furrowed his brows and glared at her, then extended his hand toward her. Laurent quickly moved her hand behind her back, laughing awkwardly.

"Now that the Browns have left, I think it’s best if we keep a little distance between us..."

Keep a distance? Dave couldn’t help but feel confused and frustrated by her response.

Her words made Dave’s expression immediately darken.

"What do you mean by that? Last night, we crossed a line, and now you’re telling me to keep a distance?"

His words made Laurent’s face flush instantly.

"Stop being so shameless! We just slept together; it doesn’t mean anything," she retorted.

"Laurent!"

Dave couldn’t contain his anger anymore, yelling at her. He was furious, finally realizing what she was trying to express—did she not intend to acknowledge what had happened? Was she brushing it off?

"Why are you yelling at me?"

Laurent protested his loud outburst.

"Did I say something wrong? About last night, you’re a normal man with needs, and I’m a woman with needs too. Let’s just call it what it was—one night stand!"

With that, she turned and walked away.

Dave was livid, his anger boiling over. He stood there, taking deep breaths for a while, trying to control the urge to chase after her and strangle her.

A hookup?

He couldn’t believe she actually used that word.

Laurent quickly reached Dave’s car, and as she looked back, she noticed he hadn’t caught up yet. She furrowed her brow, wondering if he was so angry that it might be affecting him. After waiting a bit longer, she finally saw him walking over with a cold expression.

As soon as he was close enough, Laurent could smell the strong scent of smoke on him. She instinctively stepped back, and Dave shot her a furious glare before opening the car door and slamming it shut with a heavy thud.

He hadn’t caught up earlier because he went off to smoke, lighting up several cigarettes to calm himself down and prevent himself from being completely consumed by the anger she’d caused.

Laurent circled around to the other side and got into the passenger seat. Just as she settled into her seat, Dave’s cold voice cut through the silence.

"Wasn’t I just your hookup? You really dare to sit in the car of a hookup?"

This time, Laurent was left speechless, glaring at him. Dave met her gaze head-on.

"If you want a hookup, fine. But by now, you should know how much I need it. So, it’s best if you move back to Burg Eltz with me. Come on, I need it every day."

Dave said this through gritted teeth, his anger flaring up once again. The thought of her calling him a hookup only made him more furious.

His words were crude and blunt, and Laurent was both furious and upset.

"Dave, are you crazy? Who said I want to be your hookup again? I just said last night was a one-night thing, and we should pretend we don’t know each other from now on!"

With that, she turned her head away in anger, refusing to look at him.

Dave, equally furious, glanced at her and then grabbed her, pulling her over to him. He leaned in and kissed her hard, using the kiss as an outlet for his pent-up frustration.

Laurent couldn’t push him off. By the time he released her, her eyes were red from the tears she’d held back.

"Dave, you always bully me like this!" 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

What did he think he was doing? Every time they met, he always resorted to this physical behavior. If he hadn’t insisted on holding her last night, none of this would have happened.

Her tears made Dave panic. He quickly turned to grab a tissue to wipe her face, but Laurent slapped his hand away and wiped her tears herself, turning her head to avoid his gaze.

Dave slouched in his seat, pulling at his tie in frustration. He wanted another cigarette.

Everything had seemed fine last night, but now they were arguing again.

But he couldn’t entirely blame himself. She was the one who first mentioned the hookup. That’s what triggered his anger.

Still, with the situation as it was, he couldn’t really say anything.

After a while, once his emotions had calmed down, he decided not to say anything further. He started the car and drove off. No matter what, it was best to get home first and figure things out later.
