Chapter 178: Chapter 178- Could it be that Clark?

However, her words failed to garner any sympathy. The officer looked at Maggie with a face full of regret.

"Let’s set aside the fact that working hard is the right thing to do — even if she really offended you, does that give you the right to maliciously order someone to kidnap her child and injure her father?"

The officer, facing Maggie’s twisted sense of morality, was at a loss for words.

Young people these days seemed far too fragile, and family education played a crucial role in that.

When encountering difficulties and setbacks, they didn’t reflect on their own shortcomings first — they blamed others instead. Was being outstanding a crime? Did everyone in this world have to be as mediocre as they were?

Failing, and then pushing all the blame onto others, only to seek revenge — such a waste of youth for a girl like this.

Faced with the officer’s questioning, Maggie gritted her teeth.

"Yes! I wanted to kidnap her child! I wanted her to taste the pain I felt!"

Laurent, seeing Maggie’s unapologetic attitude, grew even more furious. He rushed forward to confront her.

"What did my daughter do wrong? She’s just a three-year-old child!"

"You’re a woman too — one day, you’ll have your own children. Aren’t you afraid of karma? If, one day, your child was kidnapped by someone else, how would you feel?"

Laurent never imagined that the lively and adorable Maggie she once knew could harbor such a vicious heart. She felt anger, despair, and above all, deep sorrow.

Maggie was momentarily silenced by Laurent’s words. Her face turned deathly pale as she averted her gaze, refusing to meet Laurent’s eyes.

Dave, who had been silently watching with cold detachment, suddenly spoke after a brief silence. His sharp gaze pierced straight through Maggie.

"Tell me—who’s behind this?"

Maggie hadn’t expected Dave to question her so directly. The intensity of his tone and the frightening look on his face stunned her into momentary paralysis.

After a long pause, she hastily denied it.

"No one’s behind me! I did it all on my own! I just hate her—I just wanted her to suffer!"

The officer standing nearby chuckled softly.

"Young lady, you’re only 22, right? If you were truly the mastermind behind all of this, do you understand the consequences? You might spend the next few years of your life in prison..."

The moment the officer finished speaking, Maggie staggered backward in fear. Her legs gave out, and she collapsed onto the floor, trembling.

Seeing Maggie’s panicked reaction, Laurent was now certain—there was no way Maggie had orchestrated all of this on her own. The mere mention of prison had her terrified, which meant she lacked the courage to carry out something this severe. Clearly, someone else was behind this, pushing Maggie, or more precisely, using her.

Dave stepped in front of Maggie, looking down at her coldly, his voice emotionless.

"I’ll give you one minute to tell me who’s behind this."

Then, without another word, he raised his wrist, glanced at his watch, and began counting down.

His expression was terrifying, his tone merciless, and the cold, detached way he glanced at his watch was even more ruthless. As Maggie, still slumped on the floor, looked up at Dave, she felt as though he were a Satan straight from hell—one who could, at any moment, cast her into eternal damnation.

Overwhelmed by sheer panic, she blurted out,

"Bert!"

"It was Bert! He’s the one who told me to do this!"

The moment Maggie said this, everyone in the room froze.

No one had expected her to name Bert. At least for Dave and Laurent, the person they had suspected was Clark.

Dave stared at Maggie coldly, his eyes sharp with warning.

"I’ll give you one last chance."

Maggie, on the verge of tears now, spoke hurriedly.

"It’s really him! He’s the one who’s been in contact with me this whole time—he told me to do all of this. He promised that once it was done, he’d get me out of the country."

Desperate for them to believe her, Maggie scrambled to unlock her phone and immediately dialed the number saved under Bert’s name. But when the call went through, it was a dead line.

Panic-stricken, she tried again, her hands trembling violently. Still, the number was disconnected.

"This... this can’t be happening... Why is this happening?"

Maggie’s face was drained of color as she furiously tapped her phone, as though sheer force could bring the number back to life.

"He promised! He said he’d get me out of the country... He even said that if the plan failed, he’d protect me!"

The rising desperation in her voice echoed through the room, but the more she tried, the clearer the reality became—Bert had vanished, leaving her to face the consequences alone.

Dave let out a cold laugh, stepped forward, and took Maggie’s phone. He dialed the number from his own phone—just to be sure. It was disconnected.

The officer standing nearby quickly jotted down the number and immediately contacted his colleagues, asking them to trace it.

"It was really Bert... He really told me to do this... I’m not lying..."

Maggie, collapsed on the floor, kept repeating herself, desperate to make them believe her.

But Daniel, who had been silently watching the scene unfold, was now furious. The repeated mention of Bert’s name was too much. Without hesitation, he pulled out his phone and dialed Bert’s number, putting it on speaker.

After a long moment, a man’s lazy voice answered on the other end.

"Father dear, what a surprise... Missing me? Or perhaps missing my mother?"

Daniel, enraged, didn’t hold back.

"You bastard! Bert, how did I end up with a son like you? You’d stoop so low as to harm a three-year-old child? Are you even human?!"

He was breathless with anger, his voice shaking. But after a brief silence, the man on the other end suddenly let out a low, amused laugh.

"Ah... I see now. Someone must be using my name to stir up trouble, huh?"

The laughter grew louder.

"Let me guess... Who would be ruthless enough to pull something like that? To go after a child... Could it be that dear Clark?"

As Bert’s voice filled the room, clear and unmistakable, Maggie’s face turned deathly pale. She shook her head frantically, hands waving in denial.

"No... no... That’s not him. That’s not Bert. The Bert who called me doesn’t sound like that!"

Dave’s cold voice cut through her panic. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮

"The man on the phone right now is the real Bert."

Maggie stared at him in horror, then clutched her head in despair. What was happening? The voice she heard now was completely different from the one that had been calling her all this time.

The realization hit her like a freight train—she’d been set up.
