You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 177- Everything was my idea
Dave immediately sensed that something was wrong with Laurent, and Tiffany picked up on it too. She gestured for the young doctor, who had been in the room, to leave with her, giving the family some space.
"Laurent..."
Dave looked at her with concern, trying to say something to calm her down. But as soon as he called her name, she quickly interrupted him.
"You must have realized that something’s not right, and you’ve already started investigating. Can you tell me what you’ve found out?"
Dave paused for a moment before responding.
"They’ve already been caught, and they’re on their way here."
Upon hearing this, Laurent held her daughter even tighter and let out a cold laugh.
"Of course..."
Dave couldn’t bear her rejection any longer. Seeing her in such pain, with tears streaming down her face, he felt an intense urge to go to her, to hold her in his arms and let her cry it all out.
He wanted to hold their daughter too, to embrace both of them. His daughter was his everything. When he received the call from his mother about the incident, the anger and heartache he felt nearly drove him mad. He immediately contacted people to investigate.
Things between them had been progressing well, but now this had happened, and she had once again retreated into her shell.
Because they both knew deep down that this incident was most likely tied to Clark.
Clark was the knot in both of their hearts. Every time Clark was involved, everything between them immediately froze. Dave stood there, watching Laurent with a look of rejection and wariness toward him, feeling suddenly lost and helpless.
The door to the hospital room opened again. It was Daniel, pushing Alex, who was sitting in a wheelchair. Alex’s forehead was wrapped in a large bandage, with blood seeping through, which was a terrifying sight.
His body was covered with abrasions—large patches of bruises—and the nurse had treated them, applying medicine. Just looking at it was enough to break anyone’s heart.
"Dad—"
Laurent quickly walked over, holding her daughter tightly. She bit her lip hard to stop herself from crying. She didn’t want to appear weak and helpless, but her eyes remained red and swollen, tears threatening to fall.
What daughter wouldn’t feel heartbroken seeing her father in such a condition, especially knowing that he was already old and didn’t deserve to suffer like this?
In fact, her father’s health hadn’t been great. Wasn’t it just five years ago that he came to Burg Eltz for surgery? It was during that time, when her father was recovering in the hospital, that he had reunited with Daniel, and she had met Dave.
Thinking about how her father had once again been injured for the sake of her daughter, Laurent’s heart was filled with guilt and self-blame.
If an incorrect relationship only caused her own unhappiness, she could bear it. But when that unhappiness extended to her parents, causing them pain, that was enough to break her.
Alex, seeing her distressed expression, immediately tried to comfort her.
"I’m fine, I’m fine. It’s just some superficial injuries. The doctor just gave me a full-body check-up. Everything’s good, don’t worry."
The little girl struggled out of Laurent’s arms and went over to Alex, standing on her tiptoes and blowing air on his forehead.
"Grandpa, Emma will blow it for you, and it won’t hurt anymore..."
Hearing the little girl’s words, Laurent quickly turned her head away, wiping her tears. Despite the pain in his body, Alex couldn’t help but smile at her, happy from her words.
"Hey, hey, alright, alright, good girl. Grandpa doesn’t hurt anymore, not at all."
He even tried to reach out to hug the little girl, but Laurent quickly stopped him, wiping her tears away.
"You’re like this and still want to hug her? Go rest, please."
Laurent knew all too well why her father was willing to risk himself for her daughter. Because her father knew that her daughter was her life. If anything happened to the little one, Laurent wouldn’t be able to live either.
But they were her life too. If she couldn’t live, what reason would her parents have to keep going?
So in her father’s heart, he was thinking that even if it cost him his life, he would make sure that both her daughter and she would be safe and sound.
"That’s right, Alex, you should rest for now."
Daniel, trying to ease the tension, helped push Alex over to the bed. Dave stepped forward and, along with Daniel, assisted Alex onto the bed.
Just as they had settled Alex in, there was a knock on the door. Then, a man in police uniform entered, followed by two nervous-looking men. Behind them, a pale-faced Maggie walked in last.
When Laurent saw Maggie, she was momentarily stunned, but then she quickly realized—could it be that Maggie was the mastermind behind this whole incident?
Meanwhile, Dave was already chatting with the man in the police uniform. From the tone of the conversation, it seemed like the man was a friend of Dave’s.
Laurent, still somewhat rational, handed her daughter over to her mother.
"Mom, please take Emma outside for some fresh air."
Laurent didn’t want her daughter to overhear such a dark conversation. Besides, as soon as her daughter had seen those two men, she had nervously shrunk into Laurent’s arms. It was obvious the little one had recognized them, and staying here would only deepen her fears.
Cassy took the little girl and walked out, and Tiffany followed them out as well. Since Daniel was there, Tiffany didn’t want to stay inside.
The room quieted down again. The officer brought the two men in front of Alex.
"Mr.Alex, could you take a look? Were these the two who tried to abduct your granddaughter and hit you with the car?"
Alex nodded, and the officer then turned to the two men.
"Now, repeat everything you told us at the station."
The two men were originally small-time thugs, but now they were terrified, their lives nearly shaken out of them. They had been scared stiff by the murderous look from Dave. How could they have known that the person they had messed with was Dave? If they had known it was Dave’s daughter they were going after, they would have never accepted the job, even if someone offered them a lot of money.
They had thought it was just another regular case of revenge or intimidation, and that once they completed the job and got paid, they could wash their hands of it. Even if they got caught or investigated, their superiors would protect them. But who knew they had messed with Dave? After the incident, they were quickly arrested by the police, and not even their superiors dared to intervene on their behalf.
That’s when they realized the gravity of the situation. Panicked, they quickly spilled everything about Maggie, who had instructed them to carry out these acts.
At the officer’s command, the two men immediately agreed that Maggie had been the one who paid them and told them to do everything. All eyes turned to Maggie.
Maggie’s face was pale, and she trembled all over. But when she saw everyone staring at her, she gritted her teeth and spoke, her eyes filled with hatred as she glared at Laurent.
"Yes, it was me. I was the one who instructed them. Everything was my idea!"
Maggie loudly accused Laurent.
"I hate this woman because she was the one who got me fired! If it weren’t for her working so hard all the time, how would the boss have thought I wasn’t working hard enough? How would the boss have fired me and given her the opportunity to go to that trade show with me to talk to clients?"
"She’s almost thirty years old, and yet she’s out here competing with us young people for jobs! Do you think I wouldn’t hate her?"
By the end, Maggie was shouting angrily, completely out of control.
