Chapter 182: Chapter 182- cruel

Even when Dave had broken up with Clark in the past, he had quickly bounced back, throwing himself into running Washington & Co., making it thrive.

But seeing him like this now, Tiffany feared he might not recover this time.

It wasn’t that he didn’t love Laurent—it was just that he had never truly expressed it.

In that way, he was just like her.

Sometimes, Tiffany wondered: If she had expressed her love more intensely back then, would Daniel have never gone to that woman and her child?

But life didn’t offer so many "what-ifs." A mistake was a mistake. Once something was missed, it was simply gone.

Dave let out a bitter laugh.

"Then what do you think I should do? She probably hates me to death right now. She won’t even see me..."

He was her son, after all. Even though Tiffany was angry at him for how he had handled things with Clark, she couldn’t help but offer him some advice.

"Letting go for now is sometimes the only way to secure a better future."

Dave recalled Morrison’s words to him and smirked self-deprecatingly.

"You all keep saying that..."

Tiffany raised an eyebrow, intrigued.

"Oh? Who else told you the same thing?"

"Morrison."

Dave answered his mother, and Tiffany, both curious and approving, nodded.

"At least he has some emotional intelligence."

Dave said nothing more.

They all told him to let go for now, but who could truly understand the pain and reluctance in his heart?

By the time he had finally realized his feelings for Laurent, it was already too late. Just when he had managed to use the Browns’ visit to Burg Eltz to bridge the distance between them, everything had fallen apart at the worst possible moment. No one regretted it more than he did, no one felt the pain as deeply as he did.

And yet, at this point, it seemed that the only thing he could do was to let go—at least for now.

Emma Washington stayed with Laurent for a week before returning home. Tiffany accompanied the Burg Eltz driver to pick her up.

The reason Tiffany came along was that Dave didn’t feel comfortable letting his daughter travel alone with just the driver. So, Tiffany took on the task without complaint.

As for Dave, he once again chose to stay away, avoiding any direct encounter with Laurent.

Laurent had been busy these past few days. After returning from the trade fair, she had a mountain of work to sort through. But in order to spend more time with her daughter, she made sure to complete as much as possible during the day so she wouldn’t have to work overtime at night. Gradually, the little girl’s emotions stabilized. Children tend to forget things quickly, and over time, the fright she had experienced that day faded from her memory.

However, Laurent had noticed something odd. Whenever she took her daughter out, she often felt like they were being followed. She even asked her parents, and they, too, mentioned having a similar feeling when taking the child for walks.

One day, she finally caught them—two burly men who admitted that they had been sent by Lord Washington to stay nearby and ensure her family’s safety.

Laurent recalled that day in the hospital when Dave had promised her that nothing dangerous would ever happen again. So, this was what he meant. But could he really protect them this way forever?

Later, Laurent mentioned the matter to Tiffany, asking her to tell Dave that there was no need to go to such extremes, even hiring bodyguards.

Tiffany agreed to pass on the message, but in the end, the two bodyguards remained. Laurent eventually gave up on bringing it up again.

Before leaving with Lady Tiffany, the little girl burst into tears, clinging to Laurent and begging her to come along.

After her daughter left, Laurent felt a quiet sadness lingering in her heart.

For the first time since their divorce, she wondered if leaving Burg Eltz had been the wrong choice. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

At the time, Laurent had been focused solely on getting away from Dave and Burg Eltz—a city filled with painful memories. She hadn’t considered her daughter’s feelings.

Even though she now video-called Emma every day and saw her almost every week, it still wasn’t the same as being together every single day, sharing the small, intimate moments of life.

After Emma left, Laurent buried herself in work once again. Matthew had placed his first order with her—not too big, not too small, but enough to be considered a sign of recognition.

Business was driven by profit, after all. It was clear that Matthew wanted to test the waters with a trial order, evaluating her capabilities and the factory’s production capacity. If he had placed a large order all at once and they couldn’t deliver—whether in terms of quality or deadlines—it would have been a huge loss for everyone involved.

Meanwhile, something else had been making waves on the internet—a video of a female piano teacher abusing a child had gone viral.

The incident started when the teacher was instructing a young boy in piano. The boy was restless and refused to cooperate, and in response, the teacher kicked him to the ground. Then, she grabbed a sheet of music and angrily threw it at him.

In this highly connected digital age—where every child is their parents’ treasure and where netizens are quick to unleash their fury from behind their keyboards—a video of child abuse like this spread like wildfire.

As soon as the footage went viral, the female piano teacher was swiftly identified. Clark, female, 30 years old, a graduate of XX University’s Arts Academy, had spent five or six years studying abroad.

Reports indicated that the piano school had wasted no time in firing her. Once her identity was exposed, she became a public enemy, scorned and condemned across the internet.

The latest news was that the parents of the child, accompanied by a group of people, had confronted Clark at her home. The encounter had ended with her suffering a broken rib and severe bruising, landing her in the hospital.

For most people, this was just another piece of online drama—an excuse to vent their outrage and curse Clark out. But for Laurent, it was deeply personal.

Watching the video of Clark, disheveled and pale, being taken to the hospital, Laurent felt an undeniable sense of satisfaction.

Objectively speaking, Clark’s actions—though despicable—might not have warranted such a brutal outcome. Laurent had no doubt that some people had deliberately used the opportunity to escalate the situation, taking advantage of Clark’s already ruined reputation to exact additional revenge.

But regardless of the circumstances, Laurent found herself in a strangely good mood.

Call it cruel, but when it came to someone who had once tried to harm her child, she couldn’t muster any emotion other than malicious glee.
