You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 183- She liked playing dirty?
That afternoon, as Laurent stepped out of the factory gates after work, a middle-aged man and woman suddenly rushed toward her and dropped to their knees with a heavy thud, startling her so much that she instinctively took several steps back.
At the same time, two men in black suits emerged swiftly from a nearby car, blocking the couple before they could get any closer.
Laurent had assumed that since her daughter had returned home, the bodyguards shadowing them had also withdrawn. She hadn’t expected them to still be watching over her.
The kneeling couple sobbed desperately, their voices trembling with anguish.
"Miss Laurent, we beg you—please let our daughter go! She was reckless and foolish. We apologize on her behalf. Please, we’re pleading with you—don’t let her go to prison!"
Laurent didn’t need to ask who they were. Their words made it clear—they were Maggie’s parents.
Maggie was still being held at the police station, unable to prove her innocence. Without evidence to absolve her, she had to take full responsibility for orchestrating the attempted child abduction.
Laurent had been determined to see Maggie receive the punishment she deserved. Yet, looking at the tear-streaked faces of the sobbing parents kneeling before her, she felt a pang of hesitation.
Judging by their modest clothing and demeanor, they weren’t wealthy or influential—just an ordinary couple from a humble background.
Laurent understood what it meant to be a parent. She also understood what it meant to be a child. If one day she found herself in their position, watching her own daughter face such dire consequences, how devastated would her own parents be?
But at the same time, she reminded herself—Maggie’s parents were not entirely blameless. Pitiful people often have their own detestable faults. If they had raised their daughter properly, would she have ended up on this criminal path?
With that thought, Laurent hardened her resolve. Without a word, she turned on her heels and walked away, leaving Maggie’s parents crying behind her.
The two bodyguards remained in place, ensuring the couple wouldn’t follow.
Since their failure in raising their daughter had led to this, then perhaps the education society was now giving Maggie was exactly what she deserved.
They were lucky that nothing serious had happened that day. But what if something had? What if a life had been lost, or an even greater tragedy had occurred? Would their kneeling and wailing now change anything? It would have been far too late.
"Miss Laurent, Miss Laurent—"
"Please, we beg you, have mercy on Maggie!"
Maggie’s parents, seeing Laurent walk away, broke down even further, their cries growing more desperate and heart-wrenching.
Laurent clenched her jaw, forcing down any trace of sympathy. Without hesitation, she quickened her pace and left.
That night, after returning home, she told her parents about the incident.
Alex and Cassy exchanged a glance before both let out a heavy sigh.
Alex’s health had largely recovered by now, and the wound on his forehead had almost completely healed.
She decided to think of it as a good deed, accumulating some virtue for herself, her daughter, and her parents. Hopefully, this lesson would make Maggie live honestly and act responsibly from now on.
After saying that, she glanced at the man in black and said,
"As for you guys, tell him to withdraw as well. I don’t need it."
Then, she turned and headed to work.
Dave received a call from the man in black, pondered for a moment, and then instructed,
"Alright, come back."
He then made another call, ordering someone to bring Maggie’s parents over. Yesterday, he had received a report that Maggie’s parents had caused a scene in front of her factory. Without hesitation, he had them taken away immediately.
As soon as Maggie’s parents arrived, they attempted to kneel and plead, but Dave, already annoyed, had his men stop them. It was obvious that the past few days had not been kind to them—especially Maggie’s father, who now had strands of white hair on his forehead.
Their daughter had brought this upon herself, but as parents, they were deeply troubled.
Begging and humbling themselves, they knew that if Laurent insisted on pursuing the matter, Maggie would inevitably end up in prison.
Dave followed Laurent’s every word these days. He knew she was softhearted, which meant he had to be the one to play the bad guy behind her back.
So, facing Maggie’s parents, he was cold and ruthless.
"I believe you bear the greatest responsibility for Maggie ending up like this."
"Yes, yes, it’s all our fault for failing to educate her properly," Maggie’s father nodded repeatedly, then sighed and shook his head in remorse.
"We had her late in life, and though we weren’t well-off, we spoiled her since childhood. We indulged her so much that she became selfish, never considering others’ feelings, always believing that people should yield to her and do as she wished."
Maggie’s parents knew their daughter better than anyone. Yet, despite being fully aware of her selfish and willful nature, they had failed to correct her in time. And that, perhaps, was what had led Maggie to where she was today.
Dave asked them indifferently,
"You’ve seen that viral news story recently, right? The one about the piano teacher who was hospitalized after being beaten up for abusing someone else’s child?"
"Yes, yes, we saw it," Maggie’s parents murmured, remaining silent otherwise, their helpless tears streaming down their faces.
Dave glanced at them coldly before continuing,
"That woman merely hit someone else’s child a few times and ended up in the hospital with broken ribs. By that logic, shouldn’t your daughter have had her limbs broken by now?"
His words were chilling, sending an icy terror down their spines. Maggie’s mother turned deathly pale and collapsed onto the floor in fright, while her father gasped for air, overwhelmed by the horrifying image his words had painted. The mere thought of their daughter being crippled was too gruesome to bear.
"This time, you’re lucky," Dave said, his expression unreadable. "My child’s mother has a kind heart. She told me to let you go."
He fixed them with a sharp gaze and added,
"But let me be clear—if your daughter ever disturbs our lives again, don’t say I didn’t warn you about the consequences."
"And of course, if she continues to harm others, I doubt those people will be as merciful as my child’s mother."
Dave’s warning was firm. Maggie’s father nodded repeatedly, promising that they would discipline her properly. Meanwhile, Maggie’s mother, upon hearing that her daughter was being spared, collapsed onto the ground, sobbing uncontrollably. It was as if all the fear and anxiety she had been suppressing had finally erupted at once.
Based on Dave’s judgment, Maggie’s personality suggested that this ordeal had likely shaken her to the core. Chances were, she would finally learn her lesson and behave from now on.
At the end of the day, Maggie was nothing more than a spoiled girl. She didn’t have much malice in her heart, nor was she particularly scheming or cruel.
She had simply harbored some resentment toward Laurent, and Clark had taken advantage of that, goading her into making a terrible mistake.
In fact, if Clark hadn’t interfered, and Maggie had continued spending time with Laurent, she would have eventually realized that Laurent was actually a kind and easygoing person. Given enough time, her dissatisfaction with Laurent might have faded away, slowly replaced by understanding and even acceptance.
Dave firmly believed in Laurent’s ability to win people over. After all, in all these years, he had never met anyone who held deep-seated resentment toward her. Even their more troublesome relatives managed to get along with her reasonably well.
But with Maggie, things had played out differently. Their acquaintance was still fresh, and with Clark’s deliberate manipulation in the mix, the situation had escalated into something far worse than it ever should have been.
After issuing his warning to Maggie’s parents, Dave ordered them to be sent away. With that, the matter of Maggie was finally put to rest.
But as for the other person involved—Dave believed this was only the beginning.
If Clark thought this level of "retaliation" wasn’t enough, then he had no problem letting things get even darker for her.
Yes, everything happening to Clark was orchestrated by him from behind the scenes.
She liked playing dirty?
Then he would gladly play along.
