Chapter 194: Chapter 194- keep a secret

Dave didn’t persist in saying or doing anything further. He had seen the fleeting moment of emotion in her eyes earlier.

For a moment, there was a brief silence between them. Laurent’s phone rang, and she took it out. On the screen, the word "Leonardo" appeared in large letters, causing Dave’s expression to darken instantly.

Laurent turned and walked to the side to answer the call. Dave could hear her chatting casually with Leonardo on the other end, completely different from the coldness she had shown toward him.

"Want to grab a meal? When?"

"Sure, see you tonight then."

The reason Laurent agreed to eat with Leonardo was that they hadn’t seen each other for a long time. Plus, Leonardo mentioned that Vivian and Frank would be there as well, so she thought it would be fine to have a meal with a group of friends.

Leonardo was a busy man, and they hadn’t met much over the past six months. They’d had a few phone calls and talked about their respective situations. Leonardo also knew that Laurent and Dave had completely lost touch and had congratulated her on that.

Laurent no longer felt as angry as she did when he had wished her unhappiness at her wedding. Maybe it was because she didn’t care about her relationship with Dave as much anymore, so she didn’t really mind what Leonardo said.

After hanging up, Laurent returned to the car, only to find Dave with a cold expression on his face.

Before she could say anything, he walked over, took the bag he had given her as a gift, and turned to leave with big strides.

Laurent: "..." 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

He was simply insane. Who takes back a gift they gave someone?

Actually, Dave was just angry, expressing his frustration in this way.

She rejected his invitation for lunch, but when Leonardo invited her, she agreed?

He was about to lose his mind!

He had spent half a year trying to avoid seeing her, giving her time to forget the unpleasant past. Now, when he finally decided to make his move, he couldn’t even get her to agree to a meal with him. Instead, she agreed to meet with his old rival. How could he not be angry?

In a fit of rage, he took back the gift he had given her.

He had bought her a silk scarf, thinking it would suit her current elegance and make her even more graceful and charming. So, was he really supposed to let her wear the scarf he gave her when meeting his old rival?

He must have been crazy to do that.

He knew that taking back the gift was childish and petty, but at that moment, he couldn’t care less.

Laurent didn’t pay any attention to Dave’s sarcastic remarks and simply got in the car to leave with her daughter.

If he wanted to lose his mind, he could do that on his own—she had a ton of things to do.

First, she drove to Adeline and Eddie’s new house. After picking up the house keys, she hurried over to Adeline’s old apartment.

The apartment was now empty. Since Adeline and Eddie’s new place was a newly built house, none of the furniture had been moved, except for two beds that had been taken out.

Adeline said that the beds had been used for many years and weren’t in good condition anymore, so they threw them away. Plus, if they rented the apartment out to someone else, the new tenants would likely buy their own bed.

Laurent walked around the whole apartment, making a list of the items she needed to buy, which she recorded in her phone’s notes. She planned to take her daughter along for a big shopping trip afterward.

First, she needed to buy two beds, then bedding. She also planned to replace all the curtains, along with the cushions and covers for the sofa, and many small decorative items. That’s just how she was—though it wasn’t her own house, she still wanted to make the space feel cozy and comfortable.

She also needed to get pots, pans, and other kitchenware. The kitchen was her specialty, and cooking was one of her hobbies, so everything in the kitchen had to be complete.

While she was making her list, the little girl was hopping around the room.

"Mom, why are we here?"

Hearing her daughter’s question, Laurent put away her phone, walked over, and picked up the little girl. They both sat down on the sofa together.

"Emma, Mommy is coming to Burg Eltz. From now on, you’ll be able to see me more often. Are you happy about that?"

The little girl’s eyes lit up, and she wrapped her arms around Laurent’s neck, asking,

"Really? Mommy, are you going to work here?"

Laurent nodded.

"Yes, Mommy got a new job, and I’ll be living at Aunt Adeline’s place."

Laurent looked at her daughter seriously and then added,

"But Mommy wants to ask you to keep this a secret for now and not tell Daddy. Can you do that?"

The little girl blinked her big eyes in confusion and asked,

"Why?"

Laurent knew the little girl wouldn’t understand the explanation, so she hugged her tighter and began to act cute.

"There’s no reason. I just don’t want him to know, okay? Please keep this secret for me, alright?"

Sometimes, with little kids, it’s not necessary to always act like a mature adult. Occasionally, acting a little childlike and being playful can make them happy and make them feel like they’re trusted and relied upon.

"Okay? Please, pretty please?"

Laurent leaned in and nuzzled the little girl’s smooth cheek, acting all cutesy.

The little girl, with the air of a little adult, raised her hand to smooth Laurent’s hair.

"Alright, alright, I promise you."

Laurent gave the little girl a big kiss on her cheek.

"Thank you, sweetheart."

At any rate, she didn’t want Dave to know she was coming to Burg Eltz, at least not for now. When it came to work, her instincts told her that if he found out, her life would definitely be more complicated. She wasn’t sure how long she could keep it a secret, but for now, she didn’t want him to know.

Whenever it came out, she’d deal with it then.
