Chapter 20: Chapter 20- frustrated

When he interrupted like that, Laurent was furious and snapped at him without hesitation,

"Which one of your eyes saw me yelling at the child?"

Dave raised an eyebrow and retorted,

"If you weren’t yelling at the child, then why the cold, serious face?"

And that sarcastic tone she had when speaking, clearly trying to force their daughter to leave with her.

Laurent sneered,

"I thought the president of Washington Enterprises, who’s been in business for so many years, would be good at reading people. I didn’t expect you to be this clueless."

Dave’s face instantly darkened; she was indirectly insulting him.

She accused him of having a cold face because he was angry at their daughter, but now she was implying that he couldn’t read people, suggesting that she had no negative feelings toward their daughter at all. All her bad emotions were supposedly due to him.

This woman...

Her sharp tongue was infuriating!

Dave felt like ever since she brought up divorce that night, she had completely changed. The old her, he could have called a good wife, but now, he just wanted to call her a shrew!

He held their daughter tightly, gritting his teeth, and said,

"Mom misses Emma. Let me take the child over to her place for dinner tonight."

It wasn’t that Dave was trying to bring up Tiffany at this moment, but Tiffany had actually asked him to bring their granddaughter for dinner.

Tiffany and Laurent had a good relationship as mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, and she doted on the granddaughter, so after not seeing her for a few days, she really missed her.

In fact, Laurent got along well with the people from Burg Eltz, except for Dave.

In fact, her relationship with Dave wasn’t exactly bad. Their interactions were very calm—so calm that it felt like there was no joy in their lives, let alone any joy in love.

Some people say that’s what marriage is like, a slow and steady flow.

But their marriage wasn’t a slow, steady flow; it was like a stagnant pool of water.

When Laurent heard Dave say that Tiffany wanted to see their daughter, she didn’t say much. She knew that Tiffany truly cared for her granddaughter, and the relationship between their daughter and the lady of the manor was also very good. When the child was just born, she had been flustered and overwhelmed, and it was Tiffany who helped her out.

Moreover, Tiffany was also on the path to divorce. Although she appeared calm on the surface, she might not have been feeling good inside. Maybe having their daughter over could cheer up the lady of the manor a little.

So Laurent suppressed the bad feelings in her heart and told her daughter,

"Listen to Aunt Adeline when you’re at the lady of the manor’s place."

The little girl was in Dave’s arms at that moment, and Laurent couldn’t get too close, so she just gave this simple reminder.

The little girl, now reassured by Dave’s words, "She doesn’t have the final say," had completely stopped being angry with her. Instead, she asked a question that made Laurent upset,

"Mom, aren’t you coming too?"

Laurent, "...."

In the end, she could only suppress her anger and reply,

"Mom has things to do with Aunt Adeline tonight, so I’m not going. Please say hello to the lady of the manor for me."

Then, without saying another word to Dave, she turned and left, walking briskly toward the neighborhood supermarket to buy groceries.

If she hadn’t been holding their daughter, or if her mother wasn’t waiting at home, Dave would’ve chased after her to give her a good talking-to.

But he wasn’t in a hurry. Without finding a lawyer to handle the divorce, she couldn’t leave him. He would have plenty of opportunities to deal with her later.

With their daughter taken to Tiffany’s by Dave, Laurent finally had a chance to rest. For the past few days, she had been constantly taking care of their daughter without a moment to herself, and she was exhausted.

After dinner, she called the lawyer she had arranged to meet a few days ago. Since their daughter would be starting kindergarten tomorrow, she had some free time and wanted to meet with the lawyer to discuss things. However, to her surprise, the lawyer, who had previously seemed eager to take on her case, now said they didn’t have time and wouldn’t be accepting it.

Before she could say anything else, the lawyer hung up, and when she tried calling back, the phone was switched off.

Laurent was frustrated.

She thought about it later and wondered if the lawyer really was busy. After all, she had been too preoccupied with taking care of their daughter to keep in touch with the lawyer. Maybe the lawyer had picked up a big new case recently.

Never mind. There were plenty of lawyers in the city. She didn’t believe she couldn’t find one to handle her case.

Her daughter spent the night at Tiffany’s. Tiffany personally called her to say she wanted to keep their granddaughter for the night and that she would make sure to drop her off at kindergarten tomorrow. Tiffany also mentioned that she had been exhausted from taking care of a sick child recently and advised Laurent to rest and get a good night’s sleep.

Laurent was deeply touched.

Unlike many marriages nowadays, she had a great Tiffany, a wonderful father-in-law, and a lovely sister-in-law, but she didn’t have a good husband.

It couldn’t be said that Dave was bad; he was still good to her. He just didn’t love her.

After resting for a night, the next day Laurent went to the mall with Adeline. They met with the store manager for a brief interview. The manager thought Laurent was elegant and had extensive knowledge of fashion, so she decided to hire her on the spot. Laurent didn’t expect things to go so smoothly and was quite happy.

She was actually someone with a simple and cheerful personality, but the past few years had seemed to numb her.

Once her job was secured, the next task was to find a lawyer quickly.

In the following days, Laurent contacted several lawyers. At first, they all showed interest in taking her case, but when she called again, they all refused.

Then one day, a female lawyer, perhaps out of sympathy for her, kindly warned her,

"Mrs. Washington, I think you shouldn’t go through with the divorce. Every time you find a lawyer, Mr. Washington buys them off with a large sum of money."

Laurent was stunned with anger.

She hadn’t expected him to be behind this. She thought he wasn’t that despicable, and had naively believed that the lawyers had legitimate reasons for not taking her case.

She immediately called Dave, but this time, he deliberately didn’t answer the phone.

Laurent knew his secretary’s number, so she called that instead. The secretary very formally told her that Mr. Washington was busy and couldn’t take calls.

She asked the secretary about his schedule. If he wouldn’t answer her calls, then she’d just go to wherever he was and confront him.

The secretary hesitated, saying that whether or not to reveal Mr. Washington’s schedule would need to be approved by him first. Laurent gritted her teeth and hung up.

The secretary didn’t respond, and Laurent waited until the afternoon before calling Dave’s secretary again. This time, the secretary finally relented and said that Mr. Washington was at a particular café and would be meeting a client soon. If she had something to discuss with him, she could go there and find him. The secretary then gave her the name of the café.

Without saying another word, Laurent grabbed her things and took a taxi to the café.
