You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 19- She doesn’t get to decide
Laurent calmly hung up the phone with Dave. Every time they spoke or met, it ended in an argument, in discord.
She was exhausted.
However, no matter how tired she was, she had to pull herself together, because she still had her daughter and her parents to care for. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺
Her daughter, Emma, took three days to fully recover, and Laurent had taken a leave of absence to stay home and look after her.
As for work, Adeline had inquired for her. The manager of the clothing store said they would schedule an interview soon. Laurent believed she had a good chance. During her years married to Dave, she had gained considerable knowledge of fashion, both women’s and men’s wear.
She had also reached out to a lawyer again, and the lawyer seemed interested in taking on her case. Laurent planned to meet with him in person once Emma was fully recovered.
Her life was peaceful and orderly, but what she didn’t know was that for the past three days, Dave had been practically losing his mind. He went to the kindergarten to pick up their daughter, only to be told by the teacher that she was sick and hadn’t come to school.
He couldn’t reach Laurent, and the kindergarten teacher didn’t know where Laurent lived. Calls made through Lilian or Tiffany went unanswered.
Dave was on the verge of calling the police, but he knew deep down that Laurent hadn’t disappeared—she was simply refusing to contact him.
For the next three days, his anger created a tense atmosphere throughout the entire Washington family, with everyone on edge.
On the evening of the third day, Laurent saw that Emma was nearly better, so she decided to take her downstairs for a bit of exercise and to buy some groceries.
Just as mother and daughter were about to go downstairs, they saw Dave storming out of his car, furious.
Laurent stood there calmly, not surprised that he had found her. As the saying went, money could move mountains—given his power, there was nothing he couldn’t do.
Dave had found this place through Marc, the lawyer Laurent had contacted. Marc had previously helped Adeline with her divorce case, and it was Marc who had assisted Adeline in securing her current apartment, so he knew her address.
After several days of frustration, Dave now looked at Laurent, who appeared so calm and composed, that he almost felt like strangling her.
However, when he looked at the little one in her hand, the child shyly and nervously blinking her big, dark eyes at him, all his anger was forced down.
He walked up directly, stopping in front of the mother and daughter. Laurent immediately looked away, deliberately ignoring him.
Ignored, Dave bent down and turned his attention to his daughter instead.
"I heard you were sick. How are you feeling now?"
The little girl, hearing his concern, shyly moved closer to Laurent and softly nodded.
"I’m better now. I’ve been taking my medicine every day."
"Good."
Dave nodded, then added,
"Didn’t I promise to take you to Disneyland last time? Now that I have some free time, would you like to go with me in the next few days?"
The little girl’s eyes instantly lit up, sparkling brightly, much like how her mother used to smile with her eyes.
Dave found himself momentarily lost in the sight.
The little girl, after initially feeling excited, became suspicious.
"Dad, you’re not lying to me, are you?"
Since he had rarely taken her out to play, it was understandable that the little girl didn’t believe him.
Laurent could no longer stay silent. She interrupted the father-daughter conversation, her tone displeased.
"When did you promise her a trip to Disneyland?"
Despite his daughter being this old, he had never really taken her out for fun. Sometimes when they went to an amusement park, he would arrive only to get a work call and leave immediately.
At first, Laurent believed that he was genuinely busy. Later, she realized he might not want to be with them and was just using work as an excuse to leave.
Besides, now that they were getting a divorce, did he really think taking their daughter to Disneyland would help?
Even if he wanted to repair his image in her eyes, this wasn’t the way to do it.
He couldn’t even take care of his daughter properly. If the girl were to go, Laurent would have to accompany them, and she didn’t want to see him at all, let alone go out with him.
Faced with her sharp questioning, Dave snorted unhappily.
"That night, when you didn’t come home, she cried the whole time. I had no choice but to comfort her like that."
Laurent was momentarily at a loss for words. Although their daughter appeared to be well-behaved and sensible, she was still a child, and Laurent knew well how exhausting it could be when she threw tantrums. With that reasoning, she had nothing to counter him.
However, she soon found a solid reason to decline the trip.
"She just recovered from gastroenteritis, and she shouldn’t be going out again. So the Disneyland trip is canceled."
"Mom—Mom—!"
As soon as she finished speaking, the little girl next to her raised her face and protested in an extended voice. Laurent chose to ignore her complaint.
"There’s no rush. We’ll talk about it once she fully recovers."
In response to her refusal, Dave actually softened his tone. Laurent felt that he was deliberately trying to provoke her.
Not wanting to deal with him anymore, Laurent directly told him to leave.
"Is there anything else? If not, we’re going to buy groceries."
"Hmph—!"
Seeing her Disneyland trip was about to be canceled, the little girl snorted loudly, then turned her head and stomped over to the flower bed, pouting in anger. She crossed her arms in front of her chest, glaring at the grass beneath her feet, her lips curled up in a pout.
"Emma Washington!"
It was never a good time for her daughter to throw a tantrum, but of all things, it had to be over this.
If it were about something else, Laurent might have given in, considering her daughter had just recovered from an illness. But this Disneyland trip...
She really didn’t want anything to do with Dave. They were about to get a divorce, and yet he wanted to take the child to Disneyland? Was that appropriate?
But some people were shameless, and at this moment, he was playing the good guy. Dave walked over, picked up their daughter, and said something to calm her down. The little girl’s mood improved, but Laurent was angered.
The words he used to comfort her were:
"She doesn’t get to decide."
Laurent nearly laughed in anger. Yes, she didn’t get to decide.
He had always been domineering and aloof, never once considering her, his wife. To him, she was nothing more than an accessory, someone who had never had control over him.
The only two women in the world who could control Dave were Tiffany and Clark!
Not wanting to deal with him anymore, Laurent shifted her gaze to her daughter in his arms and coldly said:
"Emma, Adeline auntie is on the early shift today, and she’ll be home soon. So, I need to hurry and buy groceries and cook. Do you want to stay here?"
Before the little girl could say anything, Dave spoke up in her defense:
"Why are you taking it out on the child?"
