Chapter 206: Chapter 206- keep it a secret

On the first day of the New Year, Dave came to pick up his daughter. It was Laurent who suggested letting their daughter go back, as she believed it was customary for the younger generation to visit and pay respects to Lady Tiffany, the lord, and the high lord on this special day.

Laurent’s mother welcomed Dave and invited him inside for a while. Although Alex was reluctant, he knew that since it was New Year’s Day, the atmosphere should be joyful. It wasn’t the time to put on a cold face and act indifferent.

Laurent wasn’t home.

She had gone out early in the morning to pay New Year visits as well. She was busy, with many friends and relatives to see, especially those who had helped her, such as Danny and Samantha. She had to visit them personally.

In fact, just after midnight last night, Laurent had received a message from Maggie.

Maggie wished her a Happy New Year and then mentioned that, through her parents’ introduction, she had met a boyfriend. She planned to get married next year and hoped to receive Laurent’s blessing.

Maggie said that if she couldn’t receive Laurent’s blessing on such an important occasion, she would probably live the rest of her life in guilt for almost having hurt Laurent’s daughter, unable to find peace.

Laurent didn’t hesitate to give her blessing and replied to Maggie, wishing her a happy marriage and a lifetime of happiness.

If Maggie was seeking psychological relief and closure, then Laurent would grant her that.

However, Laurent wasn’t a saint. She simply knew that she would never contact someone like Maggie again. In the future, if she encountered anyone with a personality like Maggie’s, she would also keep her distance.

Before leaving home in the morning, Cassy stopped Laurent and said,

"Emma’s father is coming to pick her up today. Aren’t you going to wait until he arrives before heading out?"

Laurent smiled as she put on her coat and replied,

"No, I have a long list of people to visit. If I leave too late, I might not have enough time."

Cassy glanced back and saw that Alex wasn’t in the living room. She then lowered her voice and advised,

"I feel like Emma’s father has changed a lot since your divorce. Have you considered—"

Before Cassy could finish, Laurent already knew what she was trying to say and immediately interrupted her,

"Mom, you know I’m completely focused on my work right now. Let’s talk about these things later."

Before Cassy could say anything else, Laurent picked up her bags and quickly walked out the door.

"Let’s not talk about this now, Mom. I have to go."

Cassy watched her daughter’s hurried departure and couldn’t help but sigh.

Ever since their divorce, Dave’s attitude had gone through a transformation—from initial anger and frustration to eventual calmness and compromise. Every step of this change reflected his evolving feelings.

It was because he couldn’t let go that he constantly found excuses to visit.

It was because he still cared that he was willing to compromise without hesitation.

If he had truly moved on, given his status, family background, and appearance, he would have had a new partner by now after all these months. Why would he still be entangled with his ex-wife like this?

Especially this time—allowing Emma to spend the New Year with Laurent—was proof that Dave still cared about her. He must have considered that Laurent rarely got to see their child and that spending New Year alone would only add to her loneliness. That was why he let Emma stay.

In Cassy’s heart, she still hoped that Laurent and Dave would end up together again. Not for any other reason, but simply because Dave was Emma’s biological father. No one in this world could ever replace one’s own parents.

Laurent had left home early in the morning, partly because she genuinely had many people to visit for New Year’s greetings, but also because she was deliberately avoiding Dave. She had no idea how to face him right now, so she figured it was easier to just avoid him altogether.

Dave stayed at the Laurent family’s house for about half an hour, but Laurent still hadn’t returned. Cassy explained that she had too many people to visit, so she had left early.

Dave didn’t say much. As for the real reason why she left so early, only she knew.

Since he needed to take their daughter back to pay respects to his parents and the lord, he couldn’t stay too long either. So, he got up, bid Cassy farewell, and left with Emma.

On the way back, Dave chatted with his daughter.

"After we visit Tiffany and the high lord, Daddy will bring you back, okay?"

Dave was thinking that once work resumed, Laurent would be busy again, just like the past six months, barely having time to see their daughter. He wanted to take advantage of the holiday to let them spend more time together. He didn’t mind driving back and forth to drop her off if it meant they could have more time.

But the little girl shook her head and said casually,

"No need to bring me back. Mommy will be going to Burg Eltz in a few days for work, so I’ll get to see her often then."

For a moment, Dave thought he had misheard.

He felt like he had just heard the most beautiful sound in the world.

She’s going to Burg Eltz... for work?

Dave tightened his grip on the steering wheel, struggling to suppress the surge of excitement in his heart. It took him a moment to steady himself before he casually continued asking his daughter,

"Mommy is coming to Burg Eltz... for work?"

If he wanted to get any information out of Laurent, his best chance was through their daughter.

"Oh no!"

The little girl let out a startled cry, realizing she had accidentally spilled her mother’s secret. She pouted in frustration and pleaded with him,

"Daddy, can you pretend you don’t know that Mommy is coming to Burg Eltz for work? She told me to keep it a secret, but I accidentally let it slip!"

Dave immediately reassured her,

"Don’t worry, sweetheart. Daddy will keep your secret. But first, can you tell me—if Mommy is going to work in Burg Eltz, where will she be staying?"
