Chapter 207: Chapter 207-An Unexpected Visit

"Mommy is staying in Aunt Adeline’s old house. She already bought everything she needs last time she went."

Under the gentle coaxing of her father, the little girl completely forgot her promise to her mother and blurted out everything she knew to Dave.

Dave clenched his teeth as he listened.

She had already bought everything?

So she had planned this all along but deliberately kept it from him? She even made sure their daughter didn’t tell him?

Laurent, you’re something else.

Fuming with frustration, Dave drove his daughter back to Burg Eltz, his mind filled with suppressed anger.

By the time Laurent returned home after a morning of New Year visits, her mother handed her a bag, saying it was from Dave.

Laurent frowned. "Mom, why did you accept something from him?"

Cassy explained, "He insisted on leaving it for you. What was I supposed to do?"

Truthfully, if Cassy had been firm, she could have refused. But she wanted to help mend the relationship between the two, so she turned a blind eye. When Dave asked her to pass it on to Laurent, she only gave a token protest before accepting it.

Laurent couldn’t blame her mother anymore. Instead, she took the bag and went back to her bedroom.

The bag looked familiar—it was the same one from last time, the one he had stubbornly insisted on giving her but later took back in anger.

Laurent scowled.

He really had the nerve to send it again. Hadn’t he already taken it back?

Opening the bag, Laurent found two boxes inside. One was a long, rectangular box containing a silk scarf. The other held a bracelet—the very same bracelet that, long ago, her daughter had once described to her as the gift Dave had intended to give her for her birthday but never did.

The so-called

Lover’s Knot.

Laurent sighed. Dave had a certain stubbornness, an almost obsessive persistence. It had been so long, yet he still held onto this bracelet. Now, he had brought it back along with the scarf he had failed to give her last time.

As if this was his way of telling her he wasn’t giving up.

Feeling a little helpless, Laurent put the gifts away. She neither wore the bracelet nor draped the scarf around her neck. Just because her mother had accepted them on her behalf didn’t mean she had truly accepted them herself. For now, she would just leave them there.

Still, since she had received his gifts, she ought to return the gesture. Laurent decided that once she was back in Burg Eltz, she would make time to visit the mall and buy something for him in return.

Matthew’s company was set to resume work on the seventh day of the New Year, but Laurent would return to Burg Eltz on the sixth. The factories weren’t back in operation yet, so she had no immediate work to handle there. This gave her the perfect opportunity to familiarize herself with her new company’s work and environment before things got busy.

After arriving in Burg Eltz, Laurent headed straight to her new home. Though she had cleaned it before the holiday, a fine layer of dust had settled over everything after being left unoccupied for some time.

After checking in with her parents to let them know she had arrived safely, she immediately began deep cleaning the place. Once the house was spotless, she headed to the supermarket to stock up on groceries.

That afternoon, she indulged in a long, restful nap, recharging herself for the new job and the fresh start awaiting her the next day.

Back when she had left this bustling city, disheartened and defeated, Laurent had never imagined she would one day return—not just as a visitor, but as someone who had made it back through her own hard work and perseverance. Her emotions were a complex mix of excitement and nostalgia.

By the time she woke up, the sun had already started to set. She got up and prepared herself dinner.

For now, she had no plans to visit her daughter. First, she didn’t want Dave to find out she was working in Burg Eltz just yet. Second, she knew that starting a new job would be overwhelming—there would be a lot to adapt to, from the work itself to the new colleagues and unfamiliar environment. She wouldn’t have the energy to focus on her daughter, at least not right away.

Once everything settled down, she would go see her little girl. After all, they had spent a lot of time together over the holidays, which should be enough to temporarily ease the ache of missing her.

Laurent prepared herself two dishes and a soup, then opened a bottle of red wine.

A quiet celebration for the beginning of her new life.

Laurent had spoken with Adeline and Vivian over the phone, but everyone had just returned to Burg Eltz from their hometowns. They were all busy unpacking and preparing for work the next day, so there was no time to meet up.

After setting the dishes on the table, Laurent opened her laptop, put on some soothing music, and poured herself a glass of red wine.

A quiet dinner alone wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. She could take her time eating, enjoy the flavors, and reflect on life at her own pace.

Just as she was about to start her meal, a sudden knock on the door interrupted her.

Frowning in confusion, she set her chopsticks down and got up to check. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖

As far as she knew, no one was aware that she had returned to Burg Eltz, let alone that she was staying at Adeline’s place.

Could it be Adeline?

But when they spoke earlier, Adeline had mentioned that she had just returned with her two children and was busy tidying up her chaotic home.

Laurent opened the door—

Standing outside were two figures.

One big, one small.

The smaller figure avoided her gaze, their dark eyes darting around nervously—anywhere but at her.

The taller one, however, wore a rigid, emotionless expression, staring at her intensely without a word.

"You...?"

Laurent stood frozen in the doorway, completely overwhelmed. For a moment, she didn’t even know what to say.

How did Dave know she was here?

She had never told him.

Then, she glanced at the little one beside him—the guilty look, the shifty eyes.

Laurent instantly understood.

Little traitor!
