You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 22- friends
Dave got drunk.
Before dinner even started, he was already drinking one can after another of beer from Lilian’s fridge. Tiffany knew he was in a bad mood, so she didn’t stop him.
As a result, the three of them didn’t enjoy dinner. They were too busy taking care of Dave, who was very drunk.
Being a grown man, Tiffany couldn’t move him on her own, so she called Lilian to help. Together, they managed to get him to the guest room. Just as they thought he would lie down and rest, he suddenly got up again and threw up on Lilian’s new pure white fluffy slippers. Lilian was so furious she started crying, wiped her tears, grabbed the slippers, and stormed off, no longer wanting to deal with him.
After a while, Lilian stormed back, holding her phone, and took a picture of Dave’s pathetic, drunk appearance. She casually sent it to Laurent along with a message, crying out,
"Laurent, look at my brother, he’s so wasted, and he ruined my new slippers by throwing up on them!"
In the past, whenever Dave bullied her, Lilian would always turn to Laurent to complain. This time, Lilian wasn’t any different.
However, Lilian had another thought in mind. She hoped Laurent would see her brother in this pitiful state and feel sorry for him, thus coming back.
Though Lilian was a simple girl, she wasn’t foolish.
She could tell that things between her brother and Laurent had become very tense, so she wanted to help, hoping to keep Laurent—whom she also liked a lot—and help her brother hold onto a woman who truly loved him.
However, after sending the message, Lilian waited for a long time but still hadn’t received a reply from Laurent.
Not giving up, Lilian thought that perhaps Laurent hadn’t seen her message, so she decided to call instead. The phone was answered quickly, and Lilian, feeling wronged, called out,
"Laurent—"
But before she could say more, Laurent interrupted her.
"Lilian, don’t call me Laurent anymore."
Laurent’s voice was calm, but there was a subtle sternness in it, which made Lilian feel instantly discouraged.
After all the years she had known Laurent, this was the first time she had heard her speak in such a serious tone, and it was clear that Laurent had truly made up her mind to divorce her brother.
Lilian felt an unbearable ache in her heart.
"Then... can we still be friends?" she asked.
Over the years, Lilian had not only treated Laurent as Laurent, but also as a good friend and confidante. There were many things she wasn’t willing to share with anyone else, but she would always confide in Laurent.
Lilian had deep feelings for Laurent, and Laurent, too, had always cared for Lilian in return. Laurent’s parents only had her as a child, and after marrying into Burg Eltz, she genuinely considered Lilian as her own sister, caring for her deeply.
So, hearing Lilian’s words now, Laurent couldn’t help but feel a sense of sadness. She gently comforted Lilian, saying, "As long as you’re willing to continue being friends with me, I will always be your sister, your friend."
Lilian was choked with emotion, unable to say anything more. Laurent sighed and told her goodbye before hanging up the phone, fearing that if she stayed on the line any longer, she would end up crying with Lilian.
Laurent found it somewhat ironic. Even Lilian, who wasn’t as emotionally involved, was so saddened by their separation. Yet, the man who had been by her side day and night, sharing her bed, was indifferent.
After five years of living together, nearly everyone in Burg Eltz liked her, but what use was it to have the approval of so many people if the one person she cared most about didn’t love her? 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞
Since the day Laurent splashed water on Dave and the two parted on bad terms, Dave had not shown up in front of Laurent again.
Laurent was happy for the peace and quiet. She went to work at the mall every day and actively searched for a lawyer. Although no one would take on her divorce case with Dave, she didn’t let that discourage her.
It was that day when Tiffany helped her by picking up her daughter and bringing her home that she took the opportunity to have a talk with Laurent.
Since her daughter moved out, she had been living with Laurent. When Tiffany heard that Laurent was going to work, she volunteered to help pick up the child. Laurent didn’t want to trouble Tiffany, but Tiffany said she had nothing to do at Lilian’s house all day and was getting bored. Plus, she really loved her granddaughter and wanted to spend more time with her.
When Tiffany brought the child back, Adeline happened to be at home. After handing her daughter over to Adeline, Laurent went out with Tiffany. The two women found a quiet spot in a nearby teahouse.
Each with a cup of tea, they sat across from each other in silence.
Around them, the sound of string music filled the air, and the fragrance of tea lingered.
Tiffany looked at the calm face of the girl across from her and couldn’t help but feel a bit sorry.
She remembered the first time she met Laurent, with her bright smile, radiant personality, and being loved by everyone. But now, the Laurent sitting before her had a faint smile, and her eyes no longer held the same spark.
Tiffany felt both heartbroken and guilty. After all, such a lively young woman had become like this because of her son.
But in the end, the words of persuasion still came out:
"Laurent, I know you’re hurting right now. I’ve been through this myself, so I really understand how you feel."
Laurent remained silent, quietly listening.
Tiffany sighed and continued, "I just want to say, Dave has never been good with words, and he doesn’t express himself well. After observing him these past few days, I think... he doesn’t want a divorce. He wants to continue living well with you."
As Tiffany spoke, she looked at Laurent.
Laurent, who was close to Tiffany, knew that Tiffany’s words were said with good intentions.
She smiled lightly and then spoke, "That night when Emma had a fever and diarrhea, I took her to the hospital. I saw him there with Clark. He went to the hospital too."
Tiffany, clearly not expecting this, fell silent for a moment before speaking in a low voice, "This was indeed something Dave did wrong, but I heard Clark was sick and not feeling well..."
Tiffany tried to explain and defend her son, but Laurent’s tone suddenly turned cold.
"But no matter how sick she was, what does that have to do with him? Who is he to her, that he had to accompany her to the hospital in the middle of the night? Didn’t Clark have anyone else beside him?"
"Where were her parents? Her friends?"
Laurent’s pointed questions left Tiffany speechless. All she could do was helplessly shake her head and sigh.
As a woman herself, Tiffany could understand Laurent’s anger.
Being married and still involved with another woman, without any attempt to avoid suspicion—it’s the most hurtful thing.
In the end, there was nothing more to say. Tiffany knew that no matter how much she tried to persuade her son, it would be futile. So, she shifted the conversation to her granddaughter Emma, and that gave them a new topic to discuss. After finishing the pot of tea, they said their goodbyes and went back to their respective homes.
The bond between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, between sisters-in-law, and the bond between husband and wife—all the relationships related to Burg Eltz, Laurent thought, perhaps this was the end of it in this lifetime.
