You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 223- a complete fool
For someone like Dave, who was always busy, lying in a hospital bed all day was a form of torture. He needed to get up and move his muscles.
Since yesterday, he had been lying in bed almost the entire day, and it felt like he was starting to rot.
Now that his wound had healed a lot, and the doctor had suggested he could move around a little, he proposed going for a walk.
Actually, his real intention was to walk together with Laurent to strengthen their bond.
Laurent agreed to his suggestion. It was the afternoon, the sun was warm and peaceful, there was no wind, and the weather was pleasant—perfect for a walk.
However, she added, "Wait a minute, let me go get a wheelchair and have the nurses push you."
Laurent was concerned about Dave’s condition. He was still in the healing stage, and too much walking could strain his wound, so she was also worried about him tiring himself out.
Dave rejected her suggestion, "What wheelchair? I didn’t hurt my legs."
Then, he looked at her and said, "You can just support me."
Laurent, "..."
He was doing this on purpose, wasn’t he? He was taking advantage of her by making her support him.
However, he was the patient, and right now he was the one in control. Whatever he asked for, she had to comply, as long as it helped him recover faster.
So, she walked over, raised her hand, and hooked it around his arm, supporting him as they walked outside together.
Though she was supporting him, in reality, she was simply walking arm in arm with him. Since Dave’s injury made them walk slowly, they were close together, as intimate as a couple.
Once they were outside, Laurent tried to pull her hand away from his.
"Let’s sit here for a while," she suggested.
Dave agreed to sit down, but as soon as she tried to pull her hand away, he pulled it back and tightly held it in his palm. He casually asked, "Why did you leave earlier?"
Dave was referring to when the nurse came to change his dressing, and she had turned to leave immediately.
Laurent was stunned by the question, then she forced a laugh and answered vaguely, "No particular reason. I just thought it was a little stuffy in the room, and I wanted to get some fresh air..."
Could she admit that she couldn’t stand seeing him with the woman who admired him? Laurent didn’t expect Dave to be so sharp, immediately noticing her discomfort.
Dave, however, didn’t believe her words. As they sat there, he turned slightly toward her, stubbornly staring at her. His large hand held hers tightly.
"Look me in the eyes and answer me again."
Laurent, "..."
Why was he so persistent? Why did he have to press for an explanation?
Dave refused to back off, continuing to ask, "You’re not jealous, are you?"
Laurent was somewhat angry and embarrassed.
"Dave, where do you get all this confidence from?"
How could he shamelessly assume she was jealous?
He looked at her slightly annoyed expression and suddenly smiled, then seriously said,
"It’s because of you."
"Because you once loved me so unreservedly, you made me realize how perfect I am in your eyes. That’s why I have so much confidence now."
He spoke each word carefully.
Laurent’s face flushed slightly, but her chest also trembled a little. There wasn’t a woman who didn’t love sweet words. She was an ordinary woman, and she was no exception.
However, when had he become so good with words? And speaking so beautifully at that?
Although Laurent didn’t directly answer Dave’s question about why she left earlier, her expression betrayed everything. Dave saw through her concern for him, and being clever, he didn’t push her to admit it.
He just needed to know that she still cared for him. As for when she would open up and be honest with him, he believed that day would come.
Isn’t it said that the longer wine is aged, the more fragrant it becomes?
He believed love was the same; the more it was refined by time and experience, the more precious it became.
The longer it went on, the more she would discover his good qualities, and the deeper she would fall for him.
Dave stayed in the hospital for about a week, but Laurent only stayed with him for two days.
It was Dave’s own request for her to return to work because, after a few days, his wound gradually healed and didn’t need much care. He was just being observed at the hospital and waiting for the stitches to be removed.
Dave also knew that Laurent had just started working at Matthew’s company after the New Year, and it wouldn’t be good for her to take long leave so soon, so he proactively asked her to go back to work. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢
As a result, Laurent could only visit him after work. Laurent, of course, could also sense that Dave was considering her well-being, which was why he only let her take two days off before returning to work.
She could feel his thoughtful care in every little detail, and she allowed herself to embrace those feelings.
That day, while chatting in the group with Zoey, Vivian, and the others, they talked about Dave’s recent behavior. Vivian bluntly said,
"Laurent, if he’s being good to you, just accept it. You should enjoy the feeling of being loved."
Vivian no longer tried to match Laurent with Leonardo, but she began to meddle with Laurent and Dave’s relationship, constantly advising Laurent not to reconcile with Dave too easily.
Zoey, who had already returned to work after recovering, spoke up as well:
"Yeah, Laurent, everything he does for you is because he wants to. You just need to enjoy it. As for whether you respond to him with the same love, just let it happen naturally."
Laurent thought that Zoey and Vivian both made good points, so now she just let everything unfold naturally.
During this week, there were also a lot of problems arising from Clark, but Dave handled them all forcefully.
First, Clark presented a certificate diagnosing her with a mental illness, claiming that her stabbing of Dave in the mall was a result of a sudden mental breakdown.
However, the certificate was soon proven to be fake. The police sent a psychological expert to test Clark, confirming that she was in good mental health.
Then, Clark attempted to commit suicide, and her parents came to visit again. But Dave chose to avoid seeing them. As for Clark’s current situation, it was the consequence of her actions over the years.
Especially that day when Bert called Dave, pouring fuel on the fire and gloating as he told Dave that Clark had willingly been with him, simply because Dave had told Clark that he would be the only heir to the Washington family.
That day, Dave felt down the entire day, blaming himself for all these years of attributing his breakup with Clark to Daniel and Laurent.
He had always thought that Clark had to be with Bert because of Daniel’s pressure, but now Bert was saying that Clark had willingly chosen to be with him.
Dave still clearly remembered that when he was with Clark, he had mentioned multiple times that he didn’t want to take over the Washington family business in the future. He didn’t want that kind of busy life, nor did he want to be tied down by the Washington family.
He wanted a business of his own, one he built from the ground up, where success or failure would depend entirely on his own abilities, not on the family’s power.
Looking back, it was probably his passive remarks that planted the seed for Clark to want to leave him. At that time, Bert appeared and told Clark that he was the first son of Burg Eltz and had inheritance rights to the Washington family.
Thus, Clark wavered and fell into Bert’s arms.
Dave had to admit that Clark was very calculating. In fact, when Daniel forced him to break up with Clark, she had already planned to leave him. Clark had used that opportunity to shift all the blame onto Daniel, while she played the victim, making him feel guilty for all these years.
Especially when he later learned that Clark had been living such a miserable life with Bert after returning to her country, the guilt in his heart became even heavier.
This was why he had taken her in, treated her, and even hurt Laurent without regard for the consequences.
Now, with the truth revealed, everything was just a show that Clark had orchestrated, and he had been the easiest pawn for her to manipulate in this game.
Dave was angry, resentful, frustrated, and regretful...
There were almost no words to describe how he felt that day. He felt like a complete fool.
As for Clark’s attempts to stir things up in hopes of receiving a lighter sentence or no sentence at all, in his anger, he used many of his connections and influence to resolve the matter as quickly as possible.
What awaits Clark in the future will be a life of darkness in prison, and she will never have the chance to turn things around.
