Chapter 251: Chapter 251- target

The car eventually stopped in front of the hotel where Bert was staying. Out of courtesy, Laurent accompanied him into the lobby to check in, then politely bid him farewell.

"Mr. Soul, I won’t keep you any longer. Please rest well, and I’ll see you tonight."

That evening, Matthew would host a banquet in Bert’s honor, but this wasn’t because Bert was special, nor was it because Laurent’s client was special. It was a standard practice for all visiting clients to receive this treatment.

When clients first arrived at Burg Eltz, Matthew would host a welcome banquet, and when they left, another banquet would be held to see them off. During their stay, all matters were handled by the salespeople, unless there were issues involving prices or other matters that the salespeople couldn’t settle on their own, in which case Matthew would be involved.

Bert smiled warmly and shook her hand.

"Alright, see you tonight."

When Laurent tried to pull her hand away, she found it difficult because Bert’s hand had tightened slightly, holding hers firmly.

It wasn’t flirtatious, but it felt disrespectful.

Laurent was annoyed. With a sudden tug, she yanked her hand back and gritted her teeth, saying to Bert,

"Goodbye."

She then turned and hurried out of the hotel.

Behind her, Bert stood lazily, watching her retreating figure. The smile on his face gradually faded, becoming more and more distant.

Once Laurent had exited the hotel and returned to the car, the driver asked,

"Miss Laurent, should we go directly back to the company?"

Laurent suppressed the chaotic thoughts in her mind and instructed the driver,

"Take me to Washington’s first."

The driver was a little surprised by her request to go to Washington’s, but didn’t ask further. He simply drove off.

Laurent took out her phone and dialed Dave’s number.

"Are you at the company right now?"

"I’m here, what’s up?"

Dave’s voice came from the other end, and Laurent took a deep breath before replying,

"I’ll come over to see you later."

"What happened?"

Dave immediately sensed that something was off. It was rare for Laurent to go to Washington’s to see him, especially during work hours.

"Let’s talk when I get there."

Laurent wasn’t sure where to begin. The events of the day had unfolded so suddenly, and she needed to sort things out properly with him.

When Laurent arrived at Washington’s, Dave’s secretary was already waiting downstairs to greet her. Upon seeing her, the secretary smiled and approached.

"Miss Laurent, please this way."

Laurent followed Dave’s secretary into the elevator, heading straight for Dave’s office.

Dave had originally been in a meeting, but since Laurent called to say she was coming, he wrapped up the meeting a few minutes early. As he exited the meeting room, he ran into Laurent, who was coming up with the secretary. He quickly walked over, pulled her into his arms, and instructed the secretary to bring a glass of warm water before leading Laurent into his office.

"What happened?"

Dave frowned and stared at her, noticing that Laurent didn’t look too well.

The secretary brought in the warm water, and Laurent took several sips, feeling her chest warm up a little. Afterward, she began to explain to Dave about the client she might have met today, who was possibly Bert.

As she spoke, Dave’s frown deepened, and his expression grew colder.

After Laurent finished describing the entire process of picking up Bert, she added,

"Although I’ve never met Bert before, I’m sure this Soul is Bert. What do you think?"

Dave’s voice was cold.

"It’s him."

If it wasn’t Bert, then why would he say those things in the car to deliberately make her uncomfortable?

And based on Laurent’s description, who else in the world could look like him other than Bert?

Laurent, who was held in Dave’s arms, leaned her back against his desk and raised a hand to rub her forehead.

"He contacted me using the name Soul. I never expected it would be him. If I had noticed earlier—"

She trailed off, frustrated, unable to finish her sentence.

If she had realized that the person was Bert, she would never have had any further dealings with him, and today’s events could have been avoided.

"Don’t blame yourself. It has nothing to do with whether you could have noticed or not."

Dave gently took her hands in his, holding them in his palms as he tried to comfort her.

"Bert is always manipulative. If he had such intentions, there’s no way he would have let you notice."

Laurent sighed. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

"When I was still working at the factory, he contacted me a few times by email, asking about prices, sending over some clothing designs to inquire if our factory could make them."

Laurent slowly recalled the previous email exchanges with Soul, and realized that Bert had started laying the groundwork long ago.

"I replied to him a few times, but after that, he stopped contacting me. I thought maybe he wasn’t satisfied with our factory and didn’t want to cooperate. Then, after the New Year, I came to Matthew’s company, and he contacted me again by email, this time showing a strong intention to cooperate. He even sent a few samples for us to review. The way he spoke made him seem so elegant, and I thought he would be a great client. And then..."

Laurent’s voice grew quieter as she spoke, realizing how foolish she had been to mistake a demon for a valuable client.

Dave gently lifted her chin, looking her in the eye, and spoke firmly,

"You only need to know one thing: you did nothing wrong. What you did was the proper attitude and approach a salesperson should have toward a client. If there’s blame, it’s only because Bert hid his intentions too well."

Laurent buried her face in his chest, speaking softly,

"What should we do now?"

Laurent knew she shouldn’t blame herself. Bert had acted like a potential client the whole time, with no signs of anything unusual. How could she have suspected anything?

Her inbox sometimes received dozens of inquiries from unknown clients every day, and she responded to each one carefully. How could she have the time to think about negative, suspicious things? Should she treat every client that contacted her for a quote as a potential enemy?

Besides, she never imagined Bert would use such a method to get close to her.

She also understood that Bert, being abroad, had been subtly scheming against Dave. She thought that if he wanted to go after Dave, he would directly target him.

"A man who targets women is always the most despicable and shameless."

This was Dave’s evaluation of Bert. Whether it was Clark in the past or Laurent now, Bert’s actions made Dave view him with contempt.

Still holding Laurent, Dave continued,

"The most direct and quickest solution now is for you to quit your job at Matthew’s company and sever all ties with Bert. Then he won’t have any leverage over you, and he’ll have no choice but to go after me."
