Chapter 250-bert

The three of them got into the car, and the driver drove them back to the Burg Eltz city.

Throughout the journey, Laurent felt restless, wishing the driver would speed up to quickly drop Bert off at the hotel and get away from him. After all, no one could stay calm and relaxed in the same environment as a devil.

However, she tried her best to maintain her composure. If this were any other client, she would have eagerly started a conversation, making an effort to build a connection. But with Bert, Laurent had no desire to speak. She exchanged a few polite words about the weather and Burg Eltz before lapsing into silence.

Laurent was sitting in the front passenger seat, and the driver, who had grown familiar with her, noticed her unusual behavior. He knew she was usually warm and attentive to clients, so he wondered why she was so quiet today. At a red light, he kindly reminded her a few times, suggesting that she engage with the client to ease the awkward silence.

Laurent simply smiled at the driver. She couldn’t explain to him why she was suddenly cold toward the client.

The car continued its smooth journey, and Laurent began to consider whether she should tell Dave about the situation now. If she told him, Dave would likely rush to the hotel and wait there. But what if something unpleasant happened when he met Bert? After all, Bert had yet to show any inappropriate behavior, and he was just here for the factory visit. If she made things uncomfortable right from the start, it wouldn’t be good for her standing with Matthew.

After thinking it over, Laurent decided to wait until Bert was dropped off at the hotel before quickly contacting Dave.

She had been lost in thought, and after coming to a decision, she snapped back to reality, suddenly aware of Bert staring at her from the back seat.

She didn’t even need to turn around to know he was watching her. The sense of his gaze was suffocating, and Laurent felt incredibly uncomfortable.

As she thought about how to redirect his attention, Bert’s voice broke the silence. He chuckled lightly before asking, "Miss Laurent, are you married?"

Laurent gritted her teeth. He must have asked that on purpose.

The ups and downs between her and Dave were clearly within his grasp, and now he’s asking her if she’s married?

How should she respond? Should she say that she married and divorced, and now she’s back in a relationship with her ex-husband?

Wouldn’t that be mortifying in front of the driver?

Such matters are personal, so the driver wouldn’t know, and as for the drama between her and Dave, only Matthew at his company knew the details.

This Bert is truly cunning and infuriating to the point that it makes her grit her teeth with hatred.

However, once Laurent realized Bert’s malicious intent, she wasn’t going to back down either. Of course, she was smiling on the surface, but when she turned to look at Bert, her face was full of sweet smiles.

"Yes, I’m married. My daughter is already four years old."

Since he deliberately tried to provoke her, she decided to turn the tables and provoke him back. She shamelessly brushed off the fact that she had divorced Dave and simply stated that she was married. Let’s see what he could say now!

The man hadn’t expected her to be so quick-witted and shameless in her response. After a brief pause, he chuckled softly, regret clearly in his voice.

"That’s really too bad." 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂

"Miss Laurent, you’re so beautiful and capable. I truly admire you."

His tone carried a clear hint of flirtation. Laurent thought to herself,

Is he trying to use the same tricks he used on Clark on me?

However, just because Clark is cheap doesn’t mean she is.

So, she smiled and replied to him,

"Mr. Soul, I don’t think the kind of woman you admire is someone like me."

What she meant was that he admired someone like Clark, and she was subtly making it clear that she was a completely different kind of woman. The tricks he used on Clark wouldn’t work on her.

Once again, Bert didn’t get the upper hand.

Now, Bert’s gaze toward her became even deeper, and he continued with her words.

"That may not necessarily be the case. Men’s tastes are always changing. One moment they like a certain type of woman, and the next, they might prefer a completely different style. As a married woman, Miss Laurent, you’d better keep an eye on your husband."

His words subtly suggested that maybe Dave would one day start liking other women.

Laurent smiled sweetly and replied,

"That’s fine. Men are fickle, but it doesn’t matter. As long as a woman’s heart doesn’t change, it’s fine. I don’t know if Mr. Soul knows this, but there’s an old saying from Burg Eltz: ’Respond to change with consistency.’ So as long as a woman’s heart is loyal, she can still keep a man’s heart tightly in her hands."

After speaking, Laurent couldn’t help but admire her own quick thinking in the moment. What she had just said was enough to shut Bert up.

She first emphasized that her loyalty to Dave would never change, hinting that he shouldn’t waste his time on her with useless efforts. She also indirectly criticized Clark’s inconsistency.

And the reason she was able to confidently say that she could keep Dave’s heart tightly in her hands was because of the confidence Dave had given her during this time.

After Laurent finished speaking, she still wore a sweet smile on her face, and she turned to look at the man in the back seat with a warm and harmless gaze. Bert’s expression was quite entertaining.

He was a bit angry that she had left him speechless, and somewhat surprised by her quick wit. In the end, all his emotions transformed into a deep, probing look, which he directed at Laurent’s face. Finally, with a smile in his eyes, he said,

"Miss Laurent really has a way with words."

Laurent smiled back at him and said,

"You flatter me."

Then, she turned back and settled herself back into her seat.

For the rest of the journey, Bert didn’t try to start a conversation with Laurent, and of course, Laurent didn’t take the initiative to speak to him either.

When she was young, her parents had taught her that if someone bullied her, she should strike back hard, even if she wasn’t their match, she should still retaliate fiercely. That way, if the person tried to bully her again, they would remember her powerful response from the last time and wouldn’t dare to act so recklessly.

What Laurent had just done to Bert was exactly this.

Compared to the crafty and devious Bert, Laurent was no match for him, but she still fought back without backing down, responding to every move he made, and in the end, she even gained the upper hand.

The reason Bert didn’t provoke her again throughout the journey was probably because he was a bit wary of her sharp tongue. He also knew that even if he tried to make things difficult for her, she wouldn’t just sit back and take it, so he restrained himself a bit.

Bert must have already known about her background, and it was likely that Bert had deliberately sought her out for business. She, too, had confirmed his identity, and she guessed that Bert had also realized that she knew who he really was.

So, both of them were aware of each other’s true identities, but on the surface, they had to pretend to maintain a harmonious client-business relationship.

Right now, Laurent still couldn’t determine Bert’s true intentions for returning to the country, and she couldn’t take any immediate action.

If she acted impulsively and created a rift with Bert, it would definitely cause great harm to Matthew and the company’s reputation. People in the foreign trade circle would say that Matthew’s company had low-quality employees who didn’t know how to handle clients and just quarreled with them. If a competitor maliciously spread rumors, Matthew and the company would likely struggle to maintain a foothold in the foreign trade industry.

So, Laurent couldn’t afford to act rashly. After all, Bert wasn’t interacting with her in a personal capacity, and since this was related to the company, Laurent had to be cautious and constrained by many factors.
