Chapter 26: Chapter 26- tempting

Laurent pressed her lips together, refusing to respond.

Fuming, Dave pointed to the little girl beside him.

"If we book another room, where will Emma sleep tonight?"

"With me, of course. Or are you planning to put her to bed yourself?"

Laurent shot back without hesitation, meeting his anger head-on.

The two of them stood there locked in a tense standoff at the hotel reception, their argument making the staff visibly uncomfortable. Meanwhile, new guests had begun arriving behind them, adding to the awkward atmosphere.

In the end, Dave relented and took out his wallet, booking a second room next to his for Laurent. Only then did the confrontation come to an end.

However, because of this incident, Dave kept his face cold and ignored Laurent all the way to their rooms, still holding their daughter in his arms.

Laurent, on the other hand, felt relieved by the silence. It was their daughter who, noticing her father’s expression, hesitated before speaking up. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

"Dad, are you unhappy? Did I interrupt your work by coming to Disneyland with you?"

Laurent couldn’t help but smile at the question.

Before, she had been advised not to show a cold face to avoid upsetting their daughter, but now it was Dave who was sulking. While Laurent ignored him, her own expression wasn’t as severe, and she always spoke kindly to their daughter.

Hearing his daughter’s question, Dave’s expression softened considerably. Although he was still angry at Laurent, he replied gently,

"Daddy’s not unhappy. You didn’t interrupt my work."

Then, with a shift in tone, he quickly steered the conversation back to Laurent,

"Daddy’s angry with Mommy. It has nothing to do with you."

Laurent was left speechless.

To hear such words from him to their daughter—it was truly the epitome of blaming someone else first. That was exactly the kind of behavior one would call "the villain complaining first."

Dave explained it in such a way that their daughter, with her little mouth agape, suddenly seemed to understand.

"I know why Dad is mad at Mom! It’s because Mom didn’t listen to Dad and insisted on staying in a separate room just now."

Laurent was speechless once again.

What did he mean by "not listening to him"? Why should she listen to him?

Their daughter’s comment made her feel like the little one was siding with Dave.

Now, it was Dave’s turn to want to laugh. The anger that had been building up because of Laurent’s actions was completely dissipated by his daughter’s innocent remark.

He never knew that spending time with kids could make you feel so conflicted—one moment, they’d drive you crazy, and the next, they’d say something so understanding that it would make you laugh.

Children truly are remarkable little beings with a kind of magical power.

The daughter went back to Laurent’s room with her because she needed to help the little girl bathe and change into clean clothes, something Dave probably couldn’t do.

After the mother and daughter took their bath and felt refreshed, Laurent was still in a bath towel, busy dressing her daughter, when Dave came knocking at the door. The little girl ran to open the door for him, causing Laurent to fumble and hurriedly retreat into the bathroom with her clothes.

As a couple on the verge of divorce, it wasn’t appropriate for her to get dressed in front of him, and even when they weren’t getting divorced, she always felt embarrassed to do such things like bathing and changing clothes in front of him.

Moreover, she was no longer an innocent girl and knew how dangerous it was for a woman to change in front of a man, especially when she had shared a bed with him for five years and understood his needs in some aspects very well. That was why she went into the bathroom to change.

When Dave entered the room and didn’t see her, the little girl seemed puzzled and asked, "Hey? Where’s Mom? She was just here getting dressed."

When Dave heard his daughter, he immediately understood what had happened. His gaze swept across the big bed, and he unexpectedly spotted a piece of women’s intimate clothing that had fallen to the floor.

His lips involuntarily curled into a smile, and his mind began to form some images, making him feel a little distracted and his throat dry.

He turned to look at his daughter, who was already exploring the room like a curious little thing, touching this and that.

So he walked over, picked up the clothing, and held it between his long fingers, heading straight for the bathroom.

In a good mood, he knocked on the door. After a moment of silence, her calm voice came from inside.

"Is something wrong?"

He leaned against the bathroom door, kindly reminding her from inside,

"Did you drop something outside?"

After a rustling sound of rummaging inside, there was a sudden silence. Dave could imagine the expression on her face—she was probably blushing furiously.

Inside, Laurent was indeed just as he imagined—her face turned completely red. She had hurriedly grabbed a pile of clothes and came in, not noticing she had dropped anything.

When he reminded her, she quickly searched through the clothes and realized... her panties were missing. And since he asked, it meant he had definitely seen them...

"Aren’t you going to open the door?"

His voice sounded again from outside,

"Or do you not want to wear them?"

Laurent was provoked by his latter comment, her face even redder. She angrily flung open the bathroom door, and when she saw her panties hanging from his fingertips, she almost wished she could faint on the spot.

She snatched the item away and mumbled a "thank you," intending to slam the door shut, but he stopped her. His intense gaze shamelessly lingered on her body, only wrapped in a bath towel, as he casually commented on her intimate clothing.

"The color and style are quite tempting."

Angrily and embarrassed, Laurent slammed the bathroom door shut with a loud bang and muttered a curse under her breath.

"Dave, are you sick?"

What was wrong with him? He was all sweet with his lover, and now he was coming here to make trouble with her!

Outside, Dave thought she was just too shy.

"What’s wrong with saying things like this between husband and wife?"

He shouldn’t have used the term "husband and wife," because as soon as he did, Laurent’s heart was immediately pierced with pain. She sneered coldly from behind the door and asked him,

"Husband and wife? Hah, Dave, do you even know what that word means?"

"For all these years, you’ve only treated me as your wife in body, but have you ever treated me as your wife in your heart?"

The last sentence Laurent almost shouted out in a burst of emotion.

To Laurent, the term "husband and wife" was solemn and heavy. It wasn’t just a simple phrase; in real life, it carried the weight of a lifetime.

Dave was momentarily silenced by her words, his lips pressed into a thin line. The romantic thoughts he had earlier were instantly extinguished, and he just stood there in silence.

Their daughter, who had been playing, rushed over when she heard Laurent’s raised voice from the bathroom.

"Dad, are you and Mom arguing again?"

The word "again" made Laurent’s heart ache once more.

No mother would want her child to live in an environment where there was constant fighting.

Since she had brought up divorce, this had become the dynamic between her and Dave—arguing and fighting every time they met, leaving on bad terms each time.

So, even for the sake of their daughter, they needed to end this unhealthy marriage. Laurent knew that a stable family environment was essential for a child’s development, but what could a constantly arguing home offer a child?

Because of the latest argument, Laurent changed her clothes and came out, and for a long time, she and Dave didn’t speak. However, both of them tried to appear unaffected in front of their daughter.

She spoke to Emma softly and gently, while Dave also put on a pleasant face when talking to their daughter. But they didn’t communicate with each other at all—no words, no eye contact, and no physical contact, like holding hands, linking arms, or hugging.

Since they had arrived at the hotel in the afternoon, they didn’t go to Disneyland but spent some time playing with their daughter in the hotel. After dinner, they each returned to their rooms.

Emma Washington, perhaps because it was rare for her to be out with her father, clung to him even more. She followed Dave back to his room and, when it was time to sleep, he was the one who stayed with her.

After a long day, Laurent was tired and quickly fell into a deep sleep as soon as her head hit the pillow.

In the middle of the night, her phone suddenly rang. It was a call from Dave. As soon as she answered the phone, she heard Emma’s heart-wrenching cry from the other side.

"Mom—"

"I want Mommy—"
