Chapter 27: Chapter 27- regret it!

"I want Mommy—"

Then came his somewhat helpless voice:

"Emma seems to have had a nightmare, woke up scared, and has been crying for you..."

Laurent immediately hung up the phone, threw off the blanket, and hurriedly rushed out in her slippers. At that moment, her only thought was of her crying daughter, gasping for breath.

His room was right next door. He was already standing by the door, opening it for her. She didn’t care about anything else and quickly slipped inside, heading straight for the bedroom.

The little girl was sitting on the bed, wiping away tears as she cried. The sight was truly heart-wrenching.

Laurent went over, pulled her daughter into her arms, and softly comforted her, walking back and forth as she rocked her. Eventually, the little girl, safe in her mother’s embrace, drifted off to sleep again.

Once Laurent felt her daughter was almost fully asleep, she gently bent down to place her back on the bed. However, the little girl, perhaps still shaken by the nightmare and the unfamiliar sleeping environment, felt insecure. As Laurent pulled her arm away, the girl suddenly woke up and began crying again.

Laurent had no choice but to lie down next to her daughter, turning her body to hold the little girl close and continue soothing her.

Her thoughts were entirely consumed by her daughter, and Laurent didn’t even notice her appearance. Her focus was solely on her daughter, unaware that someone else’s attention was entirely on her.

The room Dave stayed in was a suite, with the bedroom door wide open, directly facing the living room outside. While Laurent was coaxing her daughter to sleep, Dave sat on the sofa outside. He had turned on only the floor lamp beside the sofa, sitting there in the dim light, staring at the figure lying on the bed, trying to lull their daughter to sleep.

She had been in such a rush when she arrived that she was only wearing a nightgown. Now, lying on her side, she exposed her smooth, fair legs—slender and straight. The hem of her nightgown barely covered the top of her thighs, making her as alluring as could be.

Since she moved out and filed for divorce, he hadn’t had any intimacy.

For a man in his prime with a strong need, this was tormenting. And now, she lay in such a tempting posture before him. Looking at her, he couldn’t help but feel thirsty, his desire growing.

Laurent gently patted her daughter for a long while until the little one finally quieted down and fell into a deep sleep. She tucked the girl in and kissed her forehead lightly before getting off the bed and heading for the door.

When she turned around, her eyes met Dave’s intense, burning gaze from across the room. After five years of sharing a bed with him, she couldn’t possibly not understand the meaning behind such a look. She immediately felt a wave of danger.

"I’m leaving now."

After briefly greeting him, she lowered her head and made her way to the door.

How could Dave let her go at such a tormenting moment? He stood up and blocked her path. With a firm grip on her wrist, he pulled her into him and pressed her forcefully against the sofa, leaving no gap between them.

He was only wearing a bathrobe, and Laurent could clearly feel the hunger emanating from his body.

She pushed him away with great resistance, trying to remind him, "Dave, we’re getting a divorce!"

Her words had no effect in dissuading him; instead, his hands became even more reckless, his hot breath spilling over the corner of her lips.

"Since the divorce hasn’t gone through yet, you are still my wife, which means you have the obligation to do this with me."

Laurent, enraged, coldly accused him.

"I don’t want this! This is marital rape!"

"Hmm, you can try to sue me," he murmured, slowly biting her slender collarbone. His voice was hoarse, filled with desire, "If you can afford a lawyer."

Laurent trembled with anger, struggling to break free, but how could she possibly escape? Everything that followed was beyond her control.

Even though she was repulsed, angry, and disgusted, they had been married for many years, and he knew exactly how to make her feel pleasure. He pinned her down on the couch, repeatedly igniting her body.

After this encounter, her cheeks flushed with the pleasure of her physical response, but her eyes were red, too.

Laurent felt utterly humiliated.

Tears, in the end, fell uncontrollably after Dave went to the bathroom.

Before this, Laurent had never once thought about ending her life, but now she truly felt it would be better to just die.

She had never felt this desperate, even when she couldn’t find a lawyer. But now, she was truly desperate. At first, she thought that if she couldn’t get a divorce, she could at least separate from him...

But the way he treated her—how could that be called separation?

She couldn’t get a divorce, but she didn’t want to continue this marriage anymore. She felt her future was a boundless darkness, dark enough to bring her despair, humiliating enough to make her feel hopeless.

Her nightgown had already been torn beyond repair by Dave. Trembling, she picked up the robe he had dropped on the floor, wrapped it around herself, and, in a state of disarray, returned to her room. She ran a bath and threw herself into the tub, silently choking on her sobs.

How much did he hate her to humiliate and torment her like this?

Dave came out of the bathroom and, seeing that the person was no longer on the sofa, his brows furrowed instantly.

He knew he had lost control earlier, but as a man who had been apart from her for so long, there was no reason not to seize the opportunity when the chance was right in front of him, especially when the woman was his legally recognized wife.

He knew she was unwilling, but he hadn’t expected her to reject him so strongly. If it weren’t for all these years of knowing and being able to control her body so well, that encounter wouldn’t even be called an intimate moment.

However, he found that this kind of evenly matched intimacy only made him crave it even more.

He walked over to the sofa and noticed a few wet stains where she had been lying.

Had she been crying?

A flash of irritation crossed Dave’s eyes. He turned and left his room to knock on her door.

Laurent was soaking in the bathtub, trying to calm herself down. When the knocking came, she knew it was Dave. She deliberately ignored it, too upset to respond, not wanting to engage with him.

Perhaps because she didn’t respond right away, the knocking eventually stopped.

After a while, her phone started ringing in the bedroom, but Laurent still didn’t answer. He kept calling several times before the ringing finally stopped.

However, the knocking started again, more urgently this time, accompanied by his voice:

"Laurent!"

"Open the door, I know you’re inside."

"Talk to me!"

Laurent chose to continue ignoring him. How could she open the door? Did he want her to let him in again, just to bully her once more?

But he kept knocking, and since she didn’t respond, he didn’t stop. Eventually, guests from the other rooms started complaining.

"What’s with the knocking? It’s late at night, are you trying to let people sleep or not?!"

Laurent had no idea how Dave reacted after being yelled at, but she wasn’t the one who had been shouted at.

However, his relentless persistence pushed her to the edge. She stood up, wrapped herself in a towel, and walked out. Of course, she didn’t open the door for him. Instead, she stood inside, feeling utterly hopeless, and shouted in despair:

"Dave, do you want to drive me to death?!"

Suddenly, there was silence outside the door. After a suffocating pause, his voice came, gritted and furious:

"Try to kill yourself, and I’ll make you regret it!"

"Hah, what wouldn’t I dare?" Laurent let out a bitter laugh, throwing those words at him before turning and heading back to her room.

Right now, she truly understood the feelings of those who contemplate suicide. When you’ve reached the end of the road, that thought instinctively leaps into your mind, and you can’t refuse it.
