You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 263- Afraid of dying?
While Laurent was preparing breakfast in the kitchen, Dave had finished washing up with their daughter and let her play in the living room by herself before heading to the kitchen.
"I think it’s necessary for Emma and us to sleep in separate rooms now. "
Laurent hummed in response.
"Yeah, it’s necessary to sleep separately, but who’s going to talk to her about it?"
Before the divorce, their daughter had been sleeping in her own room. After their daughter turned three, Laurent started teaching her to sleep independently. After the initial crying and resistance, the little girl gradually got used to it.
However, due to the divorce, their daughter had been separated from Laurent for more than half a year. During this time, she returned to Burg Eltz. Afterward, the little girl became particularly clingy to Laurent, which undid all the efforts she’d made before.
Thinking about it made Laurent upset. The divorce had caused pain for both the adults and the child, which made her speak with frustration.
Dave noticed her tone and, being quite self-aware, decided to take on the task of talking to their daughter.
"Alright, I’ll talk to her," Dave said.
Laurent felt a little relief.
After breakfast, the two went off to work. Once Laurent arrived at the office, she first went to find Matthew to discuss Bert’s plan to visit the factory. Matthew frowned and asked her,
"What’s going on here?"
It was clear that Matthew also sensed something was off about the situation.
Laurent really couldn’t explain what was going on because even she didn’t know what Bert was up to, so she could only helplessly answer Matthew,
"I honestly don’t know what’s going on either. He was a client I had simple email exchanges with while I was still at the factory, but after that, we lost contact. Then, not long ago, he reached out to me again, and the conversation was all about fashion design and orders. Before this, all I knew was that his name was Soul."
Matthew stood up and paced back and forth in front of his desk, deep in thought.
"Clearly, he’s been planning this for a while. I’m really worried about your safety."
Having seen a lot of business rivalry in the corporate world, Matthew knew how tricky the situation could be.
"How about I take charge and assign this so-called client to another salesperson? I’ll just tell them you’re busy with a business trip and can’t handle it."
After thinking it over, Matthew said this to Laurent.
Laurent was touched by how much Matthew cared for her, but she felt that simply handing Bert off to another salesperson wouldn’t solve anything. If Bert was trying to make things difficult for her—or more specifically, for Dave—he would likely keep causing trouble later on.
Moreover, she didn’t want Matthew’s company to be criticized by competitors for making this kind of decision, so she smiled and refused his suggestion.
"It’s fine, Matthew. Let him come after me. I also want to see what he’s really up to."
"And if I don’t stop him from achieving his goal, he probably won’t let it go easily."
Laurent thought to herself that she’d let Bert make a big fuss this time so that he would finally leave her alone afterward.
Seeing that Laurent was persistent, Matthew didn’t say anything more. He simply arranged for a new driver—a young, strong guy who was a retired soldier with impressive skills, just in case of any unforeseen circumstances.
Laurent was very grateful and thanked Matthew before returning to her office to print out the necessary materials for her trip to the factory.
Once everything was ready, she went with the new driver to the hotel where Bert was staying to pick him up. Bert, being as sharp as he was, immediately noticed the change in drivers. He gave the strong young man a thorough look-up and then smiled at Laurent, saying,
"There’s a saying in Japanese: ’Using a villain’s mind to measure a gentleman’s heart.’ I wonder if Miss Laurent could explain what this means?"
Laurent was furious. So, he was implying that she had changed drivers and made preparations because she suspected him of doing something improper? Was he saying that they were the villains and he was the gentleman? Did he dare claim that he had no ulterior motives?
She laughed coldly a few times and then responded with a serious face,
"I don’t know what that phrase means, but I do understand the meanings of the phrases ’taking precautions’ and ’preventing trouble before it starts.’"
Laurent wasn’t about to back down; she was clearly engaged in a battle of wits with him, both openly and subtly.
At this point, both of them knew exactly how they felt about each other.
Bert had already witnessed her sharp tongue before, so when she fired back at him this time, he didn’t react much. Instead, he kindly offered a reminder,
"Women who overthink age quickly."
Then he got into the car, and Laurent, fuming, slammed the car door shut and sat in the front seat.
The driver silently started the car and drove off. Laurent decided she wouldn’t speak to Bert anymore.
As a result, Laurent fell silent, but Bert, on the other hand, kept chatting with the young driver. The driver, feeling that Bert was a client, felt too awkward to ignore his questions, so he answered whatever Bert asked.
Laurent initially thought Bert would only chat for a few moments, but he continued to engage the young man in conversation. Eventually, Laurent couldn’t take it anymore and interrupted, 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺
"Mr. Soul!"
Laurent had always insisted on calling him "Soul," deliberately avoiding his English name. Even though she now knew his true identity, it was a kind of silent struggle, a way of acknowledging his identity as "Soul" while not recognizing him as a person from Burg Eltz.
Laurent sternly rebuked him,
"When the driver is behind the wheel, please refrain from talking to him. I’m sure, Mr. Soul, that you’re familiar with traffic safety regulations abroad."
If he had just exchanged a sentence or two with the driver, Laurent would have turned a blind eye to it. However, now he was continuously talking to the driver, which was clearly distracting him. She had noticed that when they had just made a turn, the steering wheel had wobbled, and they were still on the highway.
Her cold reprimand made the young driver feel guilty, and he quickly focused on driving, deciding to ignore Bert’s words from then on.
As for Bert, he leaned back in his seat with an air of indifference, casually saying,
"What’s wrong? Afraid of dying?"
From his attitude, Laurent could tell that he had deliberately distracted the driver’s attention. Her anger flared up instantly.
Was he trying to cause an accident by distracting the driver? On the highway, a car crash could easily be fatal or result in serious injury!
He was really insane!
Laurent was trembling with anger,
"Yes, I’m afraid of dying, because there are too many people and things in this world that I still care about!"
After shouting, Laurent turned around and glared fiercely at Bert. But Bert didn’t seem to care.
"Tell me, if we had a car accident right now and both died together, do you think Dave would be pissed off?"
"You and he probably don’t mind living separately, but you’d die with the one person he hates the most. Ha—"
Bert’s laughter echoed through the car, and Laurent gritted her teeth in anger. However, she found herself powerless to do anything about him. So, she turned around and firmly commanded the driver,
"Drive properly!"
Then she turned back and chose to ignore the crazy Bert.
A madman!
He was really a madman!
