You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 264- felt a bit guilty
The car finally drove safely into the factory gates, and it was only after getting out of the car that Laurent’s anxious heart finally relaxed.
Laurent’s expression was far from pleasant. Anyone who had to share a car with such a reckless madman would surely look unhappy.
Bert grabbed his briefcase and got out of the car. After glancing at Laurent’s face, he smiled with smug satisfaction,
"What’s there to be afraid of? Everyone’s going to die sooner or later, right?"
Laurent glared at him fiercely. His smirk faltered for a moment under the force of her intense gaze, but then he smiled again, as if trying to reassure her,
"Don’t worry, I’m not that lacking in boundaries."
With that, he walked off confidently.
Laurent muttered under her breath, "Not lacking in boundaries? Does he still think he has any?"
But for Laurent, Bert was simply too unpredictable. He could be both righteous and villainous at the same time.
Sometimes he gave off a very gentle vibe, but other times he made people grit their teeth in anger.
With these conflicting feelings, Laurent followed Bert into the factory office building. She was very familiar with this place, so she led Bert straight to the Foreign Trade Department to find Samantha.
Before they left Burg Eltz, Laurent had already contacted Samantha about bringing Bert to the factory. Samantha and Danny were both pleased to hear that she had kept her promise to them, that a client had chosen their factory first.
However, Laurent wasn’t feeling very optimistic. She was certain that Bert wouldn’t place an order; he was just looking for ways to torment her under the guise of this visit.
Samantha and Danny had no idea about the past tensions between Bert, Laurent, and Dave. They assumed Bert was just a regular client and welcomed them warmly.
Laurent felt a bit guilty about this.
After a round of friendly small talk in Danny’s office, Danny had something to attend to, so he asked Samantha to take them to the conference room to discuss the samples. He also called in the best designer from the sample room to assist with the meeting.
Laurent felt even guiltier and, at first, she was quite uninterested.
However, when the actual discussion started, Bert instantly transformed into a serious, focused, and exceptionally talented designer. Many beautiful clothing sketches were quickly brought to life under his pen, with just a few strokes here and there.
Laurent was stunned. She had thought Bert was just a madman.
Bert was chatting enthusiastically with the designer from the sample room. The designer was a man around Bert’s age, also talented, but as a designer working in a small factory, he was still inferior compared to Bert.
Bert was a free-spirited person, and once he focused on his work, ideas and concepts about clothing styles, patterns, and designs kept pouring out one after another. The factory designer’s role was to reject some of the ideas that couldn’t be realized in production.
Making samples and actual mass production on the assembly line were completely different things. Many intricate details might be manually perfected during the sample-making process, but when it came to actual production, the output of the whole workshop had to be taken into account, and there were many things that couldn’t be done.
Laurent and Samantha’s presence in the conference room almost became irrelevant.
Most of the clients Laurent had previously hosted were foreigners. She acted as a translator or mediator for communication, or if there were any delivery issues, she would coordinate with the workshop.
However, Bert wasn’t placing an order now; he was just discussing the samples with the factory designer, so there was no need for her to be involved in negotiating delivery timelines or coordinating with the workshop.
Since both Laurent and Samantha were women, and most of Bert’s designs were for women’s clothing, they were occasionally asked for their opinions on certain issues during the discussion. They would give suggestions based on their own preferences, so they still managed to participate.
Laurent didn’t expect Bert to become so absorbed in his work. The whole morning passed by quickly. At noon, Danny called to say that he had booked a private room at the hotel for lunch to entertain her and Bert. However, Bert, buried in a pile of design sketches, waved his hand without even lifting his head and firmly declined.
As for lunch, he only asked Laurent to prepare a cup of coffee and a simple sandwich for him, then planned to continue working after eating.
Since he, as the client, had such a work attitude, how could Laurent and the others abandon him to go enjoy a lavish meal at the hotel? So, Samantha and Danny were informed of Bert’s decision, and the three of them ordered takeout instead.
After eating, the four of them continued discussing the samples in the conference room, and the discussion lasted all afternoon. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦
Laurent had never been this exhausted during a sample development session. In the afternoon, Bert began confirming one by one the final designs for the samples. Once they were finalized, Laurent, as the business representative, started typing up the sample orders.
There were as many as thirty designs. Laurent’s arms were sore from typing, and her mind was on high alert. By the time it was over, she felt mentally drained, as if her brain could no longer function. This kind of high-intensity work reminded her of her early days on the job.
Laurent thought Bert was truly a madman—mad in life and even madder at work. She felt like his work habits were going to kill her.
Not just her, but the factory’s designer was also exhausted.
Samantha, who had been helping Laurent organize everything all afternoon, couldn’t take it anymore. She quietly complained to Laurent, saying that this client was working too hard.
Laurent hadn’t even had time to drink water the entire afternoon. During that time, Dave called her, and she answered quickly. On the other end, Dave said he hadn’t finished what he was working on and might be late to meet her.
Laurent told him not to come; there wasn’t anything important to discuss at the moment, and Bert was too busy to bother with her anyway.
Dave was surprised on the other end.
"He’s really planning to place an order after developing samples with you?"
Since Bert arrived, everyone thought his business talks were just a cover for revenge.
Laurent replied to Dave, "From the way he’s working right now, it seems like he actually does have the intention of placing an order."
At first, Laurent was firmly skeptical about Bert’s intentions for business, but after observing him all morning and part of the afternoon, many of those doubts had been dispelled.
One can fake something for a short while, but not for an entire day.
Moreover, Bert’s obsessive work attitude couldn’t be faked either, so Laurent decided to temporarily believe that he might indeed be interested in placing an order.
Laurent insisted that Dave didn’t need to come. She felt bad for him since he had been busy all day. It would be too tiring for him to drive so far to see her and then have to go back to work early the next day.
Dave simply said they would talk once he was done with his work, and then they hung up the phone.
Laurent didn’t tell Dave about Bert’s neurotic behavior on the way, such as trying to cause an accident. Dave was already very worried about her, and if she mentioned it, he would probably lose it.
That evening, Danny once again invited them to a dinner, but Bert lightly declined. He picked up his computer and briefcase and said to Laurent,
"Please thank Mr. Danny for his kind invitation, but I’m too exhausted today. Just take me back to the hotel."
Since he had said this and was already walking away with his things, Laurent had no choice but to pass on Bert’s message to Samantha and then take him back to the hotel with the driver.
Laurent didn’t stay at the hotel with Bert. She had already planned to go home for the night, not only to avoid any potential harassment from Bert if he became neurotic again but also to visit her parents.
On the way to the hotel, Bert sat silently in the back seat with his eyes closed, looking very tired. His complexion also appeared somewhat off.
After arriving at the hotel, Bert went to check in, and Laurent accompanied him.
As bert was about to hand over his documents to the front desk, he suddenly groaned in pain, clutching his stomach and leaning on the counter. Laurent was startled and quickly asked,
"What’s wrong?"
Until now, Laurent had always kept a deliberately distant attitude toward Bert, avoiding eye contact no matter what he said. But this time, when she turned to look at Bert, she noticed his face was frighteningly pale.
In response to her inquiry, Bert painfully straightened up and replied coldly,
"It’s nothing. Just an old problem flaring up."
Laurent saw him clutching his stomach and remembered that he had only eaten a simple sandwich at lunch and had several cups of coffee in the afternoon. It wasn’t surprising that his stomach issues had acted up.
After Bert said he was fine, Laurent didn’t want to pry, but when he became so pained that he leaned against the counter, she felt a little sympathy and suggested,
"Why don’t I take you to the hospital?"
Bert shook his head,
"No need for a hospital. Can you please help me get some stomach medicine?"
"Okay."
Laurent thought that this was something she could help with, but she also kept an eye on the situation. She called the driver to come inside, asking him to help Bert back to his room and wait there for her.
This way, when she brought the medicine, the driver would be there, and she would feel safer.
