You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 267-It’s my fault
Dave rushed to the hotel where Bert was staying, his face dark with an unsettling aura, exuding a menacing energy. He stood at the door, raised his hand, and knocked.
As the door opened and the person who came to answer it was revealed, Dave’s eyes narrowed sharply. Without hesitation, he threw a powerful punch at the person. His strike was brutal and intense, filled with relentless force.
Bert, who had anticipated that Dave might attack, swiftly dodged the heavy punch. However, Dave, now furious, kicked the door open after Bert sidestepped and charged into the room to continue the fight.
The two of them collided.
Dave was reckless, with each blow more vicious than the last, delivering powerful punches with no concern for the consequences.
Bert was no pushover either, and for a while, they seemed evenly matched.
Each of them had years of resentment and hatred built up inside. Bert had always disliked Dave, feeling that Dave had stolen what was rightfully his—things like paternal love and the Burg Eltz family fortune. Dave, on the other hand, loathed Bert, especially after he had kidnapped Laurent that very night.
It was the perfect opportunity to vent their frustrations, and so they fought with everything they had.
Locked in the bathroom, Laurent could only hear the knocking on the door followed by the sound of a violent struggle. There were crashes as things in the room were broken or knocked over. She was frantic, worried that Dave might get hurt.
She had thought about calling out to him, but then realized that since he was already fighting Bert, calling him would only distract him. So, she held back.
She also knew that, given Dave’s temper in situations like this, he wouldn’t hold back from fighting.
Since she couldn’t stop it, she figured it would be best not to make things worse.
At first, the two outside fought fiercely, equally matched. However, Bert, being in poor health, eventually began to tire. The pain in his stomach flared up again, and in a moment of weakness, he was caught off guard and struck by Dave’s punch, sending him crashing to the ground.
Bert wiped the corner of his mouth with his hand, noticing the blood seeping out. He glanced at the blood on his hand, then at Dave, whose face, marked with bruises and whose clothes were crumpled and disheveled, wasn’t in much better shape. Bert suddenly collapsed onto the floor of the room and began to laugh loudly.
"Heh heh—"
It felt almost relieving to have fought with Dave, releasing years of pent-up anger, even though he himself was injured.
Dave wasn’t done venting yet. When he saw Bert laughing, he stepped forward, intending to drag him up and continue. But then Laurent’s urgent voice came from the direction of the bathroom.
"Dave!"
Hearing Laurent’s voice snapped Dave back to his senses. He quickly turned around and rushed to the bathroom, opening the door in a couple of swift movements and releasing Laurent from her confinement.
Inside the bathroom, Laurent had heard a momentary silence, followed by Bert’s laughter, which led her to guess that Dave had the upper hand. She quickly called out to him.
Dave pulled Laurent into a tight embrace, his voice trembling as he spoke.
"Are you alright?"
Laurent nodded firmly in his arms.
"I’m fine, unharmed."
She reassured him, but then her eyes fell on his injured cheek, and her eyes instantly filled with tears.
"I’m sorry..."
It was all her fault. If she hadn’t been so kind-hearted and bought medicine for Bert, perhaps none of this would have happened.
Hearing her words of self-blame only made Dave’s heart ache more. He raised his hand to gently stroke her hair.
"It’s my fault. I didn’t protect you."
Laurent’s tears fell instantly.
Meanwhile, Bert had already gotten up from the floor. He stood there, watching the scene of them holding each other, and sneered as he spoke.
"Are you two planning to put on a show of affection here?"
Dave’s anger flared again. He loosened his hold on Laurent, ready to rush forward and continue the fight. But Laurent stopped him. At that moment, the driver woke up, rubbing his head and looking around at the people in the room.
"What happened? What’s going on here?"
Dave took a deep breath to steady himself. Still holding Laurent, he marched towards the door. When he reached Bert, he gritted his teeth and warned him.
"Bert, do you believe I’ll have you charged?"
Bert laughed dismissively.
"Sure, I’ll be waiting. Anyway, I have no one to rely on here in the country, so I’ll probably end up asking our father for help to protect me."
Bert deliberately mentioned Daniel, referring to him as their father, which only made Dave’s anger flare up again.
Bert was also warning Dave that if he didn’t mind angering Daniel, he could go ahead and report him.
Dave managed to suppress his fury and coldly replied to Bert.
"Then you just wait for the court summons."
Dave wrapped his arm around Laurent and signaled for the driver to follow them as they left Bert’s room.
For Dave, the top priority now was to comfort Laurent and check if she had been hurt.
Outside the hotel, Laurent recounted the events to Dave and the driver. The driver was clearly frustrated.
"I didn’t expect something like this to happen. After I helped him upstairs and he rested for a bit, he poured me a glass of water and said he was very grateful for my help. I didn’t want to refuse, so I took a sip, and then I passed out."
It was clear that Bert had planned this all along. Otherwise, how could he have had the drug ready on hand?
Laurent felt guilty.
"I’m sorry."
The driver shook his head.
"No, I should be the one apologizing. Matthew specifically asked me to ensure your safety, and yet..."
Thankfully, Bert’s target was always Laurent. The driver was just in the way, and Bert only drugged him to get him out of the way without causing any harm. If something had happened to the driver, Laurent would have never been able to live in peace.
Dave pulled her into his arms.
"It’s not your fault. Since Bert had a plan from the beginning, if not this time, it would’ve been the next time you fell into his hands."
Bert was a master of manipulation, and Laurent was no match for him. She would have eventually fallen for his tricks.
But Dave was somewhat grateful for Bert’s actions this time. It gave Laurent a legitimate reason to sever ties with Bert, to finally distance herself from that psychopath.
After settling the driver in another hotel, Dave and Laurent drove back to her home.
Originally, they hadn’t planned to worry them, especially with Dave’s injuries. They had intended to stay in a hotel, but Laurent’s parents sensed something was wrong and insisted they return. Reluctantly, they agreed.
Dave hadn’t expected that his first visit to Laurent’s home after their divorce would be under these circumstances.
But thinking that he had finally managed to enter her home, Dave decided that if it had to be under these circumstances, so be it. The sacrifices were worth it.
When Alex opened the door and saw Dave’s face, his expression immediately darkened.
"What exactly happened?"
He quickly turned his attention to his daughter. Thankfully, she was unharmed.
They entered the house, and Laurent fetched the first aid kit to treat Dave’s wounds. Dave briefly explained the events to Alex and Cassy, trying to keep it as short as possible so they wouldn’t worry too much.
Cassy seemed relatively calm, but Alex was far from it. Furious, he paced back and forth in the room, hands behind his back, before turning to Laurent and ordering her.
"First thing tomorrow, you call your boss and tell him you’re done with this client. Stay away from that psychopath!"
Laurent nodded in agreement.
"Yeah, I know."
Laurent was completely done with Bert. Whether he was genuinely interested in placing an order or not, she would no longer be involved with him.
Although she believed Bert’s designs were brilliantly creative and likely to be a huge success, nothing was more important than her own safety.
After treating Dave’s wounds, Laurent helped him sit, and Dave sincerely apologized to Alex and Cassy.
"I’m really sorry. I didn’t protect Laurent well enough."
Cassy spoke up.
"Oh, this isn’t your fault. That Bert is just too devious."
Alex let out a heavy, displeased grunt.
"What a messed-up family... just thinking about it is enough to make me sick!"
He then turned and walked away.
Dave felt a bit awkward, yet he didn’t know what to say.
Yes, his family was indeed quite dysfunctional, and these issues had caused so many twists and turns in his marriage with Laurent. It was no wonder Alex looked down on him.
Cassy had always been gentle. She got up and walked toward the kitchen.
"You two haven’t eaten after all the chaos last night, right? I’ll make something for you."
She then went into the kitchen to cook.
Now, only Dave and Laurent were left sitting together on the living room sofa. Dave raised his hand and took Laurent’s, his tone dejected.
"What should we do? It seems like your dad still doesn’t like me."
It had been so hard for him to change Alex’s impression after he had protected Laurent and taken a knife for her. But now, with Bert’s interference, he was back to square one.
As a father, Dave had become particularly sensitive and critical about his daughter’s future partner as his relationship with her deepened.
A person’s character was crucial, but the family background was also an important factor to consider.
A clean, simple family background was the best choice, not like his own, constantly disturbed by an illegitimate son.
