You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 276- pitiful
After Daniel signed the divorce agreement, he handed it over to his daughter, asking her to give it to Tiffany when she returned.
Tiffany had already signed, and now he had signed as well. With that, their more than thirty years of marriage had come to an end. They just needed to pick up their divorce certificate another day, and that would mark the final separation.
Thinking about this, Daniel still felt unbearable pain in his heart.
However, when he thought about how he couldn’t let Tiffany feel even the slightest bit of unhappiness, he forced himself to endure the pain.
Tiffany and Emma Washington were directly sent back to Tiffany’s place, and Dave and Laurent had been waiting downstairs. When they saw the two women get out of the car, both safe and sound, Dave and Laurent finally felt relieved.
Laurent immediately stepped forward and held his daughter in his arms, inspecting her from head to toe. The little girl’s mood hadn’t been affected at all; she was still as cheerful as before.
"Mom—" 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮
Laurent, holding his daughter, turned to Tiffany.
"Are you okay?"
Tiffany smiled gently.
"I’m fine, and Emma is fine. If I told you Bert has actually been quite polite to us, would you believe me?"
Dave and Laurent exchanged a glance, not quite believing it. Tiffany looked at her granddaughter.
"If you don’t believe me, you can ask Emma."
The little girl nodded in Laurent’s arms.
"Uncle Bert is really nice to me. He even bought me yogurt and drew pictures for me..."
Maybe Bert really was polite to them, but to Dave and Laurent, those things didn’t matter at all now. The most important thing was that Tiffany and her daughter were finally safe.
The four of them returned to Tiffany’s place, and Laurent went to boil some hot water, pouring a cup for each of the two women to help them calm down. But, in reality, the two of them weren’t really shaken—it felt more like they had just been visiting guests.
Tiffany was such a clever woman. She knew that the reason she and her granddaughter had returned safely was that Dave had agreed to some condition from Bert. What Bert wanted most, however, was Washington Co.
After taking a sip of water, she glanced at her son and asked softly,
"Did you give him Washington Co.?"
Dave hadn’t expected his mother to guess so quickly.
"Yeah, the stock transfer agreement has already been signed."
Tiffany didn’t say anything, just lowered her head and drank her water.
Dave thought for a moment and decided he should tell Tiffany about Daniel’s attitude.
"I originally wanted to fight a bit longer, but my dad..."
"He insisted that I give up Washington Co. in exchange for your safety. It was a near-mad demand. He even said he would kneel and beg me. He said he couldn’t bear the risk of losing you, and even if he had to give up everything, he would do it just to bring you back safely!"
Dave finished speaking in one breath and then looked at Tiffany. It was obvious that Tiffany hadn’t expected Daniel to do this, and she was momentarily stunned.
"He even said that, even if you still wanted to divorce him after you came back, he wouldn’t care. He just wanted you to be alive."
As Dave spoke, his voice grew rough.
"You know, he even cried... He was so desperate..."
Laurent, standing by, secretly wiped his eyes as he held his daughter. He had witnessed Daniel’s near-mad pleas to Dave, the kind of despair and frantic, hoarse begging.
If Daniel hadn’t cared so much about Tiffany, why would he have gone through that kind of agony? If it came down to it, he probably would’ve agreed to trade his own life to save Tiffany’s.
The expression on Tiffany’s face shifted from confusion and disbelief to shock, especially after hearing that Daniel had even shed tears.
Women don’t cry easily, let alone men. Yet, he cried, and in front of so many people, both old and young—he threw away his pride, disregarding everything.
To be honest, Tiffany hadn’t expected Daniel to care so much about her.
She had always believed that Daniel’s reluctance to divorce and his constant claims of love were nothing more than a habit after so many years of living together, not genuine love.
But now...
She didn’t know what to say anymore, nor could she identify how she truly felt.
Dave looked at his mother and told her about Daniel’s hospitalization.
"He’s in the hospital. His heart’s been affected."
"He passed out from anger and stress. This time, it’s serious. He’s really sick, not pretending."
Tiffany opened her mouth but ultimately asked,
"How... how is he now?"
Dave relayed the doctor’s diagnosis to Tiffany, and once again, she fell silent, saying nothing.
Lilian arrived shortly afterward. When she saw that both her mother and her niece were safe, she finally felt a huge weight lift from her chest.
But then, she remembered an even heavier task. She took the divorce agreement that Daniel had signed from her bag and handed it to Tiffany.
"It’s from my dad."
Tiffany took it and saw that it was the same divorce agreement she had once given Daniel. Flipping it to the back, she saw Daniel’s signature. Her daughter Emma, standing beside her, explained,
"My dad said that this incident made him reflect a lot. He said that you’re both getting older, and accidents and illness could happen at any time. He didn’t want the day you left to be like this, with so much unhappiness."
Tiffany’s hand froze as she held the divorce agreement. Had he really been thinking of her like this?
Did he not want her to be unhappy in the years ahead?
To be honest, Tiffany’s emotions were a mess right now. Daniel’s reaction had changed the way she viewed him. She no longer knew what kind of feelings she should have toward him.
Lilian felt sorry for her father.
"My dad is really pitiful now, ohhh..."
Tiffany glanced at her, but said nothing.
Dave and Laurent exchanged looks and decided it was time to leave with their daughter. Given Tiffany’s current mood, she probably wanted to be alone.
Lilian also left with them.
"Mom, you should rest for now. I’ll go back to the hospital to stay with Dad."
After all the children and grandchildren had left, Tiffany looked at the divorce agreement again. She stood up and walked to the bedroom, placing the agreement on the nightstand. She then grabbed a book, sat on the bed, and leaned back, beginning to read.
This was a habit she’d developed since she was young. When her emotions were in turmoil, she liked to use reading as a way to calm herself down.
Dave, Laurent, and their daughter returned to Laurent’s place. Dave hadn’t insisted on going back to the Villas because he could already foresee that tomorrow morning, when the board meeting was held and Bert was announced as the new head of Washington Co., it would definitely cause a huge storm.
At that time, the shareholders would come to protest, and he didn’t want to get involved in any of that drama. He would turn off his phone, and many of the high-level staff at the Villas knew he lived there, so they would likely go to find him. But no one knew where Laurent lived, so he could hide there and enjoy some peace and quiet.
